Spencer is sooooo excited! He borrowed a book on speaking Japanese, and is learning as much about the culture as possible. He loves sushi, and it very open to new foods, and told me that he has to get really good at DDR before he goes. He will be about an hour from Tokyo, so is hoping to make it to the city a few times. We are open to any information, suggestions and input to make his stay enjoyable and memorable. Even wondering what kind of gift would be appropriate for the family that he is staying with. Thanks! |

Oh that is wonderful , couldn't you sneak in his bag Nicole |
Wow, sounds like a lot of fun!
Never been to Japan so I can not offer any advice.....except to soak in the culture and have a blast!!!! |
How about a custom gift basket made of USA and local items. We have done that for our exchange student's families and they loved them. |
Fantastic and what a wonderful opportunity.
A gift well I think it would be nice to give something local and traditional from canada. Sort of an exchange of culture then. |
Oops !!! That would be gifts from CANADA and local gifts. Sorry - wasn't paying attention there! |
Well isn't he the world traveler?! What a lucky guy! |
Tell him he must visist Nara park in Nara! It's a beautiful park with all these paths and as you wander around you stumble across shrines, statues, a huge very famous Buddha statue, a small museum, and all sorts of cool stuff.
Kyoto is a very nice little city as well. In Tokyo I recommend the small sushi places (with the roating sushi trays) and of course the Karaoke places! |
Tell him to have a fabulous time... and try to find for him a book that talks about acceptable/polite behavior in japanese society. They're a very well mannered people, and since he'll be living with a family, not in a hotel, it might make his stay easier, if he understands what is and isn't appropriate
(If I were going to japan, I'd definitely be making a list of all my favorite anime studios to tour! I love that stuff!!!) |
I went to Japan last Spring and it was AMAZING! I'm actually going again this summer to see a friend. I went to Tokyo and to my friends home city, Oita City, and it was a blast! Tell him not to talk loud on the subways.. I got evil looks when I talked too loud! And the beds on the floor really aren't too bad! There is an Electronics "town" in downtown Tokyo.. I forgot the name but it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! |
Wonderful!!! How exciting.
We lived in Japan for 2 years. We were in a small city outside of Tokyo. LOVED it !! John works for Honda- and we were there on the ex-patriot program. All the best to your son- it will be the experience of a life time. Some of our best friends are in Japan. Tell him to really live the culture- the memories will last forever!! |
