Is it a food allergy, or flea allergy, or flea medication allergy? Has your vet told you what the allgery is or just said to cover it up? I would explore changing foods, and if you use flea meds, don't, or if you don't, perhaps try advantage or something.
Good luck! Please let us know how you do! |
Baxter had itchy skin and his doctor recommended EPA (fish oil). We give him two capsules a day - each capsule has 300mg EPA and 5 IU of Vitamin E in it. The itchiness seemed to decrease over period of two weeks.
Good Luck |
Jennifer,
Thanks for the advice regarding fish oil tabs...just did a little reading on the subject and it seems like something good to try. Do you have a certain brand you like and to you purchase ones especially for dogs or are the fish oil tabs for people alright to give? |
I'm curious to hear more about the "allergy" cause. Is it "dry skin" or an actual allergic reaction to something?
I would be careful with what you give and/or bathe him in without knowing the cause of the allergy. Rather than "add" things to the mix - you may want to start and "remove" things so you can determine what the cause is. JMO. Kristen |
It appears to be dry skin. The vet did not do allergy testing. I know that it is not fleas. It guess it could be an allergy to grass or something like that. He doesn't feel it is her food. |
No offense Lorrie, but your vet doesn't seem to be looking into it very seriously... have you considered a second opinion? I would still try a different food, perhaps ask your vet if they have any of the hills prescription diets for skin problems? Or go to a pet specialty store and speak to someone there?
Most vets don't do actual allergy testing, but most vets would first consider a food allergy as it is most common, over environmental allergens. A little trial and error, removing things from your dogs diet week by week to see if there is any improvement may lead you to your answer. |
Max had awful skin issues we used tar shampoo when it was flairing up. We tried a number of things until we found the right food. Once we switched to Nutro with the OES on the bag it is formulated for skin problems, it cleared up fairly quickley. I tried switching him to the senior food at one point and the skin conditions flared up again. The food was the real solution. |
Hi Lorrie:
We get the EPA from Baxter's vet (a holistic veterinarian). It is called "super EPA" manufactured by Thorne Research Inc in Idaho. In addition to the EPA and Vitamin E, these capsules also contain 200mg of DHA. I did a quick search on the web and found the following site carries it: http://wellvet.com. I suspect that you can get also EPA gel capsules from a health food store that would do the same job. Good luck |
Norman is allergic to beef. Anything with a hint of beef will make him itch like crazy. We use oatmeal shampoo and it really helps after a flair up. |
