TEACHING 2 OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS. IS IT POSSIBLE??

I have 2 wonderful Sheepies, Bella and Winston. Bella is 3 and Winston is 11. I have a deck off my family room with a sliding glass door. There is a grass area off the deck and it extends about 30 feet where it abuts up to a wood area. For the firest 2 years when I let them out , they went out on long ropes and peed on the grass. As you can guess, all the grass died and I am just left with mud, with the wnter snow melt and the rain it has turned into a quagmire of mud. Lat summer I put in an invisable fence, which has been a godsend.I ran the fence out into the woods hoping the dogs would due their business out their. That didn't happen. They just kept peeing on the , now mustly gone grass/mud area. Yesterday the weather turned nice here in NH and Skip and I went out and cleare the wood area of lower branches so it opened up the wood and too make it more inviting for the dogs to venture into. I started walking them out on a leash one at a time to hopefully change and make permanent a new spot where they will go pee. My goal is to eventualy replace the mud with new lawn, but only if I am sucessful. I will take them out everytime on the leash and they both go in the woods with no problem. Has anyone out there tried this before and were you sucessful??

Our sheepie Ollie always ran out in the hay field to poop and pee. He trained our other dogs to do so also. Now that he's gone, and we have young (and new) dogs, they have reverted back to going in the yard. :(
I know they are creatures of habit. I would think you could retrain them.
