Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Nail Filing Suggestions

I have a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier with extremely fast growing black nails. His nails have been a source of frustration for all of us. I had him used to clippers when young, but once I cut his quick he had to be pinned down and I became too nervous. Then we tried the Dremel. Again, pinning absolutely necessary and not a 1 person job. My husband was out of town frequently so I started taking him to a groomer at least once week. That became unbearable for him also (he would whimper as soon as we got near the place.) So FINALLY I decided to try something that seemed silly because of all the sites I looked at no one recommended trying this. I got an 80-grit nail file for acrylic nails and tried that. At first I just did one stroke on each nail. Within a week he was used to it. Now, everyday for 5 minutes (at the most) we do his nails. He rolls over and waits patiently. You have to either grasp the nail from both sides to support while you file back and forth, OR support the pad and the top of the nail and draw the file over the nail in one direction only. You can't hurt your dog so he/she feels better and more at ease as do you. Good Luck!

Good suggestion and great job getting him used to that!
It IS a great idea. I'm glad it worked for you too :D

A previous vet told us about using a cardboard-type fingernail file. I thought it sounded rather nuts. :? We have a Schip-mix that was a terrible cry baby when it came to having her nails trimmed at the vet... they clipped one back too far once and she never forgot. It just got so traumatic for her to have them clipped so we started using a cardboard nail file on her nails. She still doesn't like having her nails done but she will tolerate it now.

We also did this with Emma and Darby when they arrived 3 years ago. Because of our experience with our Schip-mix, we purposely took a brief time every evening to "play groom" them so that when they grew up we would be able to handle them. You start with just a quick swipe across each nail and call it good... gradually adding longer filing time. The three pups we raised using this method will lie on their sides or sleep through the clipping/filing process now.

One note though... you should probably wear a mask so you don't breath in the nail filing dust. I'm sure it's not good for the lungs. I use clippers on most of the nails but always follow up by filing the rough edges off on all front feet by using a cardboard file.
