Homemade Dog food

I am scared to buy dog food now....what is a recipe for a senior dog?
And what brand and type vitamin for your OES?

The dog food recall is definitely scary and I intend to stay away from all of the brands on the recall list, wet and dry. Do you have any premium dog stores in your area where you can get organic, high quality dog food? I feel pretty confident buying Merrick, Timberwolves, Innova, Wellness, Natural Choice, etc.
Wellness was on the list too, and I *think* Natural Choice was too...
Wellness is not on the list I saw: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

I meant Dick Van Patten's Natural Choice, not the Nutro Natural Choice. I may have the name wrong.
Oh it is Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance.

Anyway, that was just a random list of some of the high quality dog foods available in my local doggie boutiques and which are not affected by the recall and which do not contain wheat gluten.
Not to steer you from this wonderful board, but with the recall, many owners are wondering the same thing. What recipe/homemade food can I give my dog? There was just a segment on The Today show last week with all sort of homemade ideas.

I'm sure if you googled around, you would find what many large breed dogs are being fed. :)
You could also ask your vet for some recipes, or if your vet doesn't know, ask for a holistic vet around your area. I'm sure they would be good at explaining a diet for your particular dog and lifestyle.
Picking a holistic food from a company that knows where each of its ingredients come from should keep you plenty safe. You don't have to be scared. I think all food companies and suppliers are going to be a bit more careful now after this scare-- at least I hope so. I feed Merrick to my senior girl and I was about to transition the boys off their current food anyway so I think we're going to Pinnacle or Canidae this time. I like the Merrick but the kibble is too small for the boys and it winds up all over the place.
In a pinch, or when tummies are upset, I feed my dogs brown rice and boiled or baked chicken, in equal mixtures. You can throw in some carrots, as well. Ground beef sometimes substitutes for the chicken.

I've been feeding Candidae for a while now and I'm pleased with it.
We have to watch Wellness very carefully, it may be another Eukanuba/Iams deal. The have closed their manufacturing plant(s) and are contracting out production, according to Joan (she used to supply the local plant with an ingredient.)

Let's hope they don't decide to lower the quality in order to ramp up production and sales.. and profits. :plead:
I am going to try to stick to IAMS dry large breed as it causes the least allergic reaction in London.

According to IAMS website:

In fact, Iams and Eukanuba dry pet foods to DO NOT contain wheat gluten. Our dry dog and cat foods are made exclusively by P&G Pet Care and not by Menu Foods.
