What a difference a few weeks makes. When I think of the doom and gloom we felt after Max's first therapy session- and where he is now- it all seems like a dream. His improvement is nothing short of amazing. Though we have been pleased with how he is doing- the last few days have been remarkable. He is up and walking at least 15 GOOD steps before he falls or stops to rest. We live back a long lane- 650 feet off the road- and last night we went for a walk all the way to the end of the driveway and back. Of course- he still needs the strap- BUT- it is just supporting him now. He is actually walking - using both back legs. He may just enjoy the summer after all. My Mom saw him two weeks ago- and then again last night. She couldn't believe what she saw. I have been telling our families and friends about the improvement - and they are stopping by to see for themselves. And of course Max loves the attention. John reminded me that when he blew his knee out playing basketball - and had surgery- he didn't get nearly the attention or cards of well wishes that Maxie Paws is getting After discussion with the doctor- we have decided to continue for at least another month with the laser treatments- and some additional range of motion excercises. They have been so compassionate and caring at our new Vets office. I feel a little guilty- Max's old vet is right across the road from our new doc. He had been our vet for years- with our girl OES and then with Max. They did a great job- and the recomendation for the surgeon was right on. They just don't have the expanded facilities - nor do they deal much with larger dogs with more in depth medical problems..... so.. we are changing for good. We may decide to go with a very low dose of prednisone. Max has lost so much muscle tone- and the thinking is that the steroid may pump him up a bit- not just for inflamation and settling things down- but help with his stamina as well.... the longer he can walk the more we build the muscles. We talked about swimming- but there is not a canine pool close. Our new doctor suggested a pond - and as luck has it- my in-laws have a 4 acre pond so.. as soon as it gets warmer- we may try that. Very nice and clean- with shallow and deep depths. Val- I may call on you again for suggestions and advice before we take him swimming. Don't want to just throw him in and say "Swim Boy"!! So- while I hate to brag... we think Max is wonderful. Even when he was so sick- and must have been hurting and scared- he has never been grouchy- or given us any indication that he needed anything but our love. And that he has- in Bushels and Barrels!!! |

I am so happy reading this update! Max has such wonderful spirit and determination and he is so lucky to have such devoted family and friends. I am very sure that all the well wishes and optimism are helping to speed his recovery.
We need new pictures! The one in your avatar looks a bit worried. As for swimming, Chum's only gone in a canine swim tank but I do have some thoughts. It is really important to have him wear a life jacket so he does not have to work to stay above water. Also, I spent a fair amount of time getting Maggie used to the water. It helps to have a water loving dog show them the way and then also to go in the water with them, and even bring treats. Anyway, I am always happy to brainstorm about this stuff. Max is like Chumley's honorary little brother. . . |
Fantastic news regarding Max!!! Keep up the good work big boy! |
I am so happy to hear that Max is doing so well. Do you really think it is the therapy or could it be the $15 cheese that he is eating.
