no cats but thanks for rescue you will love love her.. good luck and lets see pics |
The first month or three... my cat was pissed. HATED this little bouncy and hyper THING in our house. Was hard, but I gave them time and this is them now:
We then brought in another cat who had never seen another animal. I can easily say that her problem was the other cat, not BOTH my dogs. She took a lot longer before feeling safe, secure, and accepting. For a long period, I kept the puppy or cats locked up. The cats viewed the dog through a gate (we gated our dog in the kitchen). The first night was a little too much, so the cats had to be locked up. The new smell just made her so mad at me and the world. It will take time, but eventually they will probably be accepting. May never LIKE your dog, but accept. My cats are declawed, so I'm sure this makes it a little easier. I let them beat up Yuki whenever they wanted and my dog was scared to death at first, so this kept everyone at a safe distance. For the first year, Yuki treated the cat with a level of respect she didn't even give us. She was always watching her step when crawling in bed ...never wanting to step on the cat. Always trying to lick her for approval while she would just walk all over me. good luck and congrats! |
HA! There are no cats sleeping next to our dog pictures. Edgar still wants to use the cats as play toys. Generally the leave each other alone though. Baby gates were a must at first so we could leave a room for the cats to get away from him. Took a bit but they do all settle down with each other. |
Hi! How did you get your avatars to change over? I've been having vision problems lately and when I saw the shift in your avatar, out of the corner of my eye, I thought it was a new symptom! |

Us, too. We have a kitty door into the garage for the cat's security as well as big cat trees. Bingley loves to try and play with them and I hope eventually he will be as good as Yoki above. |
AWWWW...the Yuki and kitty photos are adorable!
Congratulations Jules, and good luck with the sheepie-cat introductions! |
It should be fine...especially since you're getting a puppy, so the cats and the dog will initially be around the same size. We had 2 cats when we got Barney when he was 6 months old (and 50 pounds!)...
It takes a little getting used to for all of them, but they should accept each other. One of my cats really likes the dog (they don't cuddle though!) and one will try to avoid the dog at all costs, and the third (yes, we got a third) is kind of indifferent to it all. Just make sure that you give the cats places they can 'escape' to when the dog gets to be too much for them. Like a room separated by a baby gate, or even just a table or bookcase they can jump onto. The main thing at our house is the chase. Barney spends hours on and off just chasing cats. |
WELCOME!!
I am not a "cat" person so can't give you any advice. I do know that Tasker HATES cats and it would be a disaster to try to bring one into our house!! |

My husband did it for me. Here is a link to a discussion on how he did it. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=12814 |
Our cat is great with our dogs - actually we think the cat IS part dog! Tipup the cat rules all 5 dogs in the house. He is in the dogbed under the computer desk right now - and poor Tazz is having a fit because he wants in there! |
I have one cat who think's she owns the joint, and the other cat who is a dwarf and acts like a dog when she's around the dogs....
We just got an OES puppy and each of my two kitties has their own opinion of him. One could care less, and the other looks at him with the "death stare." I wish you luck.....they don't stay small for long ....enjoy her! |
Is your dog named Sadie or Lucky?? We went to look at them in Indy, too (we live in Lafayette) just before we ended up getting Harley, a 3 1/2 year old rescue. They were both on hold when we went, though, or we might have ended up with one, too.
We also have 2 cats, so this was a big issue for us as well. Harley is doing great with them. He was never aggressive, just curious, but on the first day he sniffed too close and got scratched. Now, he'll hardly cross their paths. I went into the bedroom the other night, and he was following after me and then saw a cat laying in the doorway-- he stopped dead in his tracks, looked at me and then back at the cat, tilted his head, and then turned around the other way. He has a healthy fear, which I think protects the cats, but they are all getting better together. Max (our older cat) will even touch noses with him, and they'll sit next to each other. Our younger cat is still afraid, but they'll all stay in the same room. I think it will just take some time, and we may have the cute cat/dog pictures, too. (hope so, anyway.) It's great that you're starting with a puppy. It will make it so much easier since they're close to the same size. If they grow up playing together, they'll like each other. Just be sure to correct your puppy if he tries to play too roughly. I let the cats fend for themselves, though-- I think nature solves itself in our case. So far it's worked, so I'm very grateful for that. This was my biggest fear in getting a dog. Good luck! |
