Blood in stool

Has anyone had this happen? I FREAKED! called my vet (after hours) he said not to worry if she has Diarrhea. This morning her stool had no blood and a little firmer. I have been slowly changing her food. She is fine in the morning but by end of the day her stool get softer. Any thoughts...

I am not sure from your message what exactly happened but there are a number of reasons there could be blood in her stool.

The thing to worry about is if you see very dark, tarry blood because that suggests a problem higher up in the digestive tract, such as an ulcer, that might require medical treatment. This kind of blood is very distinct -- you won't miss it.

Bright blood can be from straining if she had been constipated and it sometimes shows up in diarhea from the irritation.

Switching foods can sometimes cause loose/soft stool and diarhea. You might want to try adding white rice to help the transition. I switch brands frequently and different brands make a big difference in the quality of their stool. 8O So if it doesn't clear up and there is no medical cause, you might want to switch (slowly!) to another brand.

Thanks for the info, it was bright red. She is on rice today. I am seriously thinking about making her food. I get human grade dog food. I will give it time see what happens but it worries me. She is on whitefish and Sweet potato by Wellnes now.
Yeah, don't worry too much about some blood in the stool with diarreah, unless it continues. As said before it can be a symptom of straining of just from whatever is irritating the colon and causing the diarreah itself.

The colon's job is to absorb water back from the stool, so the longer the matter is in the colon, the firmer it will be. This is probably why it is dryer in the morning. Perhaps as she gets a little older and will hold it till later the second poop of the day will be firmer.
how interesting, thanks!
If it eases your mind any, I am also siwtching food and going to Wellness Puppy Mix. My puppy also has stools that go from solid in the morning to alittle soft by evening...What Ron says makes sense and I thank you Ron for that info...

I just went through a terrible stomach problem bout with my pup and the Vet did say we had blood in the stool...from the infection in his tummy. But he also said the same thing about the red blood and the tarry dark blood....so who needs a Vet when we have such knowledable people on this forum  I never realized being a member here would save me money!!!

Anyway, hope it all clears up soon and I thank everyone for advice that helped me too!
already she has better poos! ahaha it is all about the poo

I feed her rice and broth yesterday and half food and rice today. slow...
I took about ten days to do the transition to a new food...and yes, in dogs as in humans, health is all about the poop :D

Also keep in mind, human grade is only what that particular company considers "human grade," so that claim alone doesn't make it an excellent food. I did some research on this was disappointed to learn that there is no standard for calling something human grade. It's up to the company to tag it however they like.
That used to be the same thing for the term "organic." Back in the day, organic simply meant "made from carbon" or "from living material" or "part of a whole." :D It meant nothing about the contents of food; it had NO meaning, anyone could use it how they wished.

The food may (or may not) be "Human Grade", but you won't catch ME snacking on some Wellness unless it was after a natural disaster of some sort and real human food wasn't available. Even then, I might consider earthworms first. OK, maybe not for a long time.
