Tails!!

I'm still recovering from a shock I had tonight while I was out walking George!!
I met a lady with an OES and I was thrilled as I haven't met anyone round here with one.
He was fully grown but I am not sure how old!
I was admiring her dog and teling George that this dog was a big him!! And he would grow up to be a beauty just like this dog.

Now George has a tail (and I think it is a lovely tail!!) and I know there are different opinions on this but in the UK tail docking is banned from April, so I have one of the first with a tail! I love it when I get up in the morning and hear ie banging on the floor, or when he runs round and his tail looks like it is winding him up!

As I have no intention of showing George and he is my first OES it really doesn't bother me that he has a tail as he was born with one I am happy for him to keep it.

Any way this lady said "oh my God he has a tail" I said yes he has! She was absolutely disgusted and pulled her dog away from George like he was going to catch something!
She said he looks stupid. I said to her yes he is a modern dog, but I am so mad, angry, upset I don't really know that someone who likes sheepies would be so horrible to my puppy!

I don't think it matters either way, what difference did it make to her whether he had a tail he is my dog. I just don't think that people should be so awful!

I hope the next CRUFTS winner is a Sheepie with a tail!

Rant over!

I'm so sorry that people can be so insensitive or mean. Especially when you were so excited about seeing her dog.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the judges were to make a statement about it by changing their scoring -- one way or the other.
I doubt that will happen for the next few years! People are very stuck in their ways about things such as this! In years to come people won't think anything of it!

But for now I will just have to put up with people being tailist! At least george doesn't know what they are saying!
That's awful!

Sheepies certainly look different with a tail, but not stupid! How rude, especially since tail docking is banned now in the UK.

Since the rules have just recently changed, I would hope that judges will not fault a dog for having a tail, nor fault the dog for not having one (if it was born before the ban). There will be an adjustment period of course, and I feel for the first people to show one with a tail, as I'm sure it will be tough going for awhile.

Sorry she was so rude. Don't let it get to you.
Regardless of how one feels about docking tails...THAT was just plain RUDE! :x

I'm really annoyed for you! (hmmm...note to self, maybe I should switch to de-caffe? :lmt: )

I'm sorry this happened to you...MY (tailess) sheepies would LOVE to meet George!! 8) :D
Vickie, that woman was just plain RUDE and insensitive. I'm sorry that George missed out on a potential playmate.
That is just plain horrible for someone to say that. My finace was once telling a customer at work that he had just gotten a puppy. The customer asked what kind and Jason told the person that we had a beautiful OES girl. The customer said "Ewww". I was offended then and I'm offended for you now. Breena is my baby as George is yours and I feel hurt like various people are picking on our kids. I'm sure he looks unbelievably hansome sporting a tail.
BTW the lady should know you can't catch a tail.

What horrible behavior!! That was so mean and stupid. I can't even imagine it. I guess she did not follow the news about docking. I love the look of sheepie tails.

The winner of Cruft this year has a BIG nice TAIL, and the bitch also has tail!!!

Why not show? our first 18 years ago had tail, and he was Norwegian and Swedish Champion. And someone had to go first! And people get used to them, and we love them all.

Lene
Hi, am wondering if George might be from the same litter as Archie! Breeder Anne MacDonald Birth Date 16th Nov. Think we might have met George! We all loved him and believe it or not we had decided on calling our pup George too but changed to Archie when we realised one of the pups was already a George!
What a coincidence!
Was looking at advice on grooming tonight when saw your post. I think tails are fantastic and totally agree with you, the happy thump of the tail isjust lovely! I had opposite experience today, someone with a Bearded Collie said how nice it was to see Archie had a tail. Think most sensible people feel that way!
Hope you're having fun with George like we are with Archie.
Would love to keep in touch
Susan
Yes George is from that litter- How did you know that?

It would be great to keep in touch- Are you a member of this site?

Get in touch via my email address and perhaps we could meet up?? Do you live in the North East?
People can be so mean.

I love tails as much as I love some breeds with no tails...but I would never ever say something so rude to someone like that.

George doesn't need to be playmates with them.
I am so sorry that that lady was rude to you.... your best defense against comments like that is to educate yourself on the ban on docking in the UK and the next time you encounter someone like that you can sprout off all the reasons WHY it is banned... you will come away sounding like the intelligent dog owner and they will look like the silly @## that they are.

Tails rule!!!!
Tail or no tail....oes are the best....the woman was just rude....

ps im jealous that you can hear the happy thump of the tail!!
Bosley likes his tail.

Image

I have one with and one without, so when we meet folks we always get to hear the different opinions on which they prefer......

Really, I don't even listen anymore.....and just smile...After all, a sheepie is a sheepie is a sheepie.....
Yes the crufts best of Breed winner for OES and best bitch this year had tails and both were magnificent OES. A lot of the class winners were tailed too.

Here is Australia, Tails now, I am sorry the lady was so dam rude to you, we had that problem here too when people were getting use to the idea of tails on sheepies & seeing them with tails, our docking ban has been in since 2004.

Wether a tail or no tail, there still all sheepies.

I suppose too, in the UK it will just be a matter of time and people will get use to seeing an OES with a tail over the next few years when more start appearing with one, then no fuss from others when they see a tailed sheepie.

It was a sore point here that has settled a lot since 2004.
Yup, the government has herded the sheeple nicley.
I think sheepies have wonderful tail, and can hardly wait to see one in person.
The London Kennel Club breed standard includes both docked and undocked.

I can't believe she was that ugly to you. Your baby is adorable.
Wow, that was just unbelieveably rude 8O and mean
I'm very sorry that happened to you.
Thank you all very much for all the nice comments I was quite upset yesterday but now I just don't care what she thinks!!

I haven't seen an adult OES with a tail but I think Bosley looks fab with his!!

And it's lovely that I will be able to keep in touch with Susan who has Archie who is Georges brother!

Thank you all again.
I'm glad you're feeling better about it today. You're right - what she thinks really doesn't matter one little bit to you or George!

She was being rude and insufferable and not at all the way most sheepie lovers are known to be.

Now you've had the good fortune to meet Archie, too. Brothers will tails. :D
I think sheepies with tails are adorable! When we were looking for a rescue dog, my husband fell in love with one just because she had a tail. Harley (the one we adopted) already had his tail docked, but we love him with or without-- at least he can still wiggle his butt to show us he's happy! :)

I know the historical reasons for tail docking-- does it really serve any practical purpose now, though? I read somewhere that sheepies with tails can soil them easily. Is that true or just a myth?

Regardless, that was super-rude. I would have been upset, too, but hopefully you won't run into her again.
I would have said OH MY GOD LADY,, YOU DON'T HAVE A BRAIN

I personally think tails are adorable and you are indeed lucky to have a sheepie that5 has one!!!
I wish Laika had a tail. You are lucky. You are so right about the wacking on the floor. I miss that sound. She seems less expressive to me... ENJOY YOUR TAIL!!
Why can't people keep their opinions on other peoples pets (OES's) to themselves? What a rude woman to say your dog looks stupid. I know how you feel though because I read about my dog on this forum being described as scrawny, thin coat and weak haunches with a TAIL. Believe me he is anything but scrawny and just today he was groomed and his coat is spectacluar (my opinion) and he has the most beautiful thick bushy tail that wags constantly. Some day when I take the time to figure out how to post pictures here I will post some of Angus.

derby has a tail and i love it owning sheepys i am not use to the tail and the butt move
Yikes about the comments! 8O I would be very put off.

I love Bingley's wiggle butt but I would love him just as much if he had a tail instead. It's a different view of a wonderful dog!

Yeah, that was a long debate thread too. If I recall, a user was at puppy obedience training and saw her sheepie. Was describing that it was clearly not a show-quality OES. Maybe this was even about a breeder? Anyway, the owner of that sheepie saw the comments and was offended. This wasn't too long ago. Someone can correct me in how the story went...
OH my
No need to dredge it up, I'm sorry that happened.
I was walking my puppy( with tail) and met a shocked lady who shreiked 'oh the tail fairy didn't visit you!!!' I replied 'no quite the opposite, the tail fairy let him keep it'. That was 12 years ago, now we have sheepie number 2 still with tail causing havoc near coffee tables and thumping on doors and I wouldn't have it any other way. All of the entries at Crufts this year where fantastic and a good percentage had tails, proudly wagging.
That's just crummy and really really rude. All sheepies are beautiful tail and no tail! I think you are lucky to have weeded her out as someone you'd not want to know right from the beginning. Sorry you ran into such an inconsiderate person!
Just say I'm glad I'm not as DUMB, STUPID AND RUDE AS THIS ONE PERSON
I feel sorry for her dog. Apparently her/his owner only cares about superficial thing...and she has such a strong feeling about it that she had to act out like a complete idiot. How sad it is for a dog whose mommy is not a true dog lover? I just hope nothing would ever happened to that dog that migbt change its appearance...or else... :(

That poor dog also lost the opportunity to have a sheepie friend or perhaps a lot other puppy friends she/he could have but couldn't because they didn't meet a certain countries' showdog standard in her/his owner's eyes

...la sigh...

Well that was pretty MEAN that she said that!

We've had heated tail discussions here on the forum before, and although I like the bear-like qualities of a bob tail, I wouldn't care either way if our dogs had them or not. To me and OES is more about temperament & personalities more than anything (well, I like the fur too. ;) ).
I hate to say it, but some people are just not as deserving of the love of a Sheepie  :sidestep:
I love tails  :hearts:

LOL LOVE IT Tove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow....that's my Teddy..... :D
Awww I can't believe that woman was so rude to you :( I will be getting a sheepie with a tail too (hopefully this year) and I just CAN'T WAIT!! We are south of London in Kent. I believe sheepies are equally beautiful with or without. By the way, I read somewhere UK judges will NOT be allowed to discriminate. Check out the Kennel Club site, I think they have some info on there.

Your dog is BEAUTIFUL! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise x
im glad that my dog has tail to run for it
Speaking of Tails, as of 4/30/07, no more docking of OES in the UK.

I guess US will be next???
that was just plain rude....I got my new puppy without the tail but if it was up to me I wouldn't have done it..my oes mix has the tail and he looks beautiful
I personally like the tails. Obe does not have one, but in couple of years I plan on getting another oes and I want one with a tail. I agree with everyone that was very rude to say/act that way.
I have watched Sheepies with tail and nub since this post began. I noticed that those with tails don't have the same adorable bum wiggle as those with nubs.

This may not be true as I've had just a limited number to watch. I would really miss that bum wiggle.
Well Angus has a lovely swishy tail and he still has a bum wiggle. I think his bum wiggles as much as our last OES's and she didn't have a tail. I feel they are so cute when they are trotting along and the big bum seems to bounce from side to side.

If someone in the U.S. will sell you a dog with a tail, they are NOT a reputable breeder, though. A reputable breeder will breed and raise dogs that will be to our standard. Be careful. That isn't a personal message to you but to anyone who may be searching this topic.

Your right it's not true!!!
George still has a bum wiggle, infact as he gets older he's getting a bigger wiggle!!! if he gets excited his bum and tail are out of control!!! :D

Are there plans in the US to ban tail docking????
Vicki & George wrote:

As of right now, no, but if animal activist get their way with other types of breeding legislation, I'm sure eliminating docking will be next. The UK just lost their docking right, but the dumb thing about their law is that certain breeds can still be docked (ie., spaniels & terriers) All of the herding/pastoral breeds must have tails now.
Dixie has a nub and a bum wiggle.

Bosley has a tail and does NOT have a bum wiggle. Actually, I am not sure how the bun can wiggle in the same way, and the tail gives momentum in the opposite direction...Hmmmm. Need to look into the physiscs of that.

And I disagree with the statement that breeders who do not dock the tails are not reputable.

A breeder can be a great breeder, show her dogs, breed to standard, do all the testing etc, dock the tails of the "show" quality puppies. That same breeder can also not like or agree with the practice, and if it is obvious that a puppy is a pet quality puppy and will never be shown, can elect not to put it through the docking.

Actually, in my opnion that would be a great breeder...

Other breeders may not like it, but I would not say that it is an irresponsable practice at all. Just a personal choice.

That's a big decision to make at 2 days old. It just makes more sense to dock for consistency purposes. Not to mention, if someone was buying a puppy and some were docked, while others weren't I think it sends a confusing message to a buyer not to mention makes the breeder seem like kind of a hypocrite. "Oh, you feel so strongly about about it but you still choose to do it to some of your dogs just so they can show?" I just can't imagine someone picking and choosing pups to dock. Maybe I'm wrong. Does anyone know of any reputable U.S. breeder that leaves tails on because they disagree with the practice?
ButtersStotch wrote:

Apparently there is a well known Canadian Breeder (reputable depends on who you ask I would say) but she is very well known in the show world etc....
anyway I was told she would leave a tail on if I really wanted a sheepie with a tail.

With a tail, without a tail...I'm just addicted to sheepies, but someday I would like to have a purebred sheepie with a tail....I almost went as far as to import one from Spain but the costs were ridiculous and since I am not a breeder nor intend to be one, the costs didn't make sense for me to spend.

Completely off track, but I just love your dog with dog avatar. :D
To dock a tail on some and not others in a litter is just not feasable at 3 days old. You either dock the whole litter or leave the whole litter.

No one in my opinion can tell the potential of a pup at that age which one to dock or leave a tail on.

A lot changes as they grow in the first 8 weeks, mouths can go, movement not as good as another, angulation better on some and not others, head better on one then the other, front and back assembly is better on one then the other etc etc. You can't tell till the pups are up on there feet and moving around and how they are growing and developing.

Anyone that says a 3 day old pup is show potential is absolute hog wash.

At 6 to 8 weeks when they are moving around is the time most sort the litter.

I imported my girl in and the breeder was running a few on for me, at 8 weeks we changed opinions and the one I was favouring for showing ended up being the other then. She came into Australia at 12 weeks old and a decision I am very happy with. The two girls were similar all the way through, just one carried herself with more flair and show then the other and had better neck length too.

So anyone that makes a decision to dock some and leave others and makes that decision at 3 days old is really only guessing what has potential and what has not. Pot Luck then.

Next pup for me is tailed, I have no choice here but a sheepie is a sheepie with or without a tail, all loved regardless of wether there is a tail wagging or not.
For those of you that own sheepies with tails - I could truly see everything going flying off of tables and bookcases, etc... with a huge tail or is it just my overactive imagination?

My boys were raised by a Sheepie and a Lab/St.Bernard mix. They grew up thinking the bottom third of the Christmas tree was never decorated. What they didn't understand was the Lab's tail cleared all the decorations on the bottom the first day.

When George goes to mums she clears EVERYTHING within tail reach!! as it can clear a table in a second!!

And it hurts like crazy when he wacks you with it!!

I'm expecting Christmas to be fun as I will spend most of time picking up Christmas tree toys!!

Still wouldn't change him as nothing beats that happing thumping of his tail on the floor!! :hearts:

That was just a question. A simple "no" would have sufficed. Sorry I asked.
We LOVE Bosley's tail too!!!
