I got an 8 weeks old puppy about 1 week ago. I've had a dog before, but got her when she was about 3 years old, so it's my first time having a puppy. I've been reading a whole lot about crate training and that's what I'm trying to do with him. I will tell you guys about our pattern, please correct us if we do anything wrong, My sister wakes up around 7h AM, we take him potty, then he comes back inside to eat, then out to potty again. He goes back in his crate for 1-2 hours, then when I wake up around 9h-10h, I take him out of his crate to potty, then we play, he drinks, pees, play. We go at it for a good hour, then he goes in to sleep for around 1 hour, then out to play pee and drink again. At around 2 pm, I have to leave the house, so we put him in his crate until my sister gets home at around 5h30. She takes him out to potty, then eat, then potty again. Then plays, drink, pees, and sleep in between until around 10-11pm. When he sleeps until the morning. I hate seeing him in his crate as I feel I'm not supose to let him be in his crate while I'm at home, but in the 3-4 hours I'm with him, it's hard to stay focused on him for more than 1-2 hours, is it wrong to put him in his crate for a little 45 min nap in between play sessions ? When I leave the house to go to school, from around 2pm to 5h30, should I leave him in the crate or use baby fences and let him run around in the kitchen ? If the second, I'm a bit scared he's going to pee all over the floor, or poop and eat it ( as he does sometimes ) I really can't let him free anywhere in the house, as he eats and chews pretty much anything. On last thing hehe, i know it's alot of questions, when he plays, all he seems to like to do is bite hands, or feet, or pants, when he's playing, you cant really pet him, he'll just chew ur hand. Anything I can do to stop him ? I got him a Kong, but he really likes hands better I will most likely have more questions soon, but i thought that was lrady too much for my first post hehe, thanks alot in advance! |

Welcome to the forum
I think you're doing just fine with regards to crate training. Don't feel bad, your puppy is safe in there if you can't watch like a hawk, and it does speed up the house training process to follow a routine as consistantly as it sounds you are doing. Regarding nipping. Puppies pretty much all nip. They explore the world with their mouths, much as a human child does. I would invest in more toys, stuffed animals, nylabones, chew toys, squeaky things... anything that the pup can chew and enjoy. Anytime the pup nips, say no or yelp, then ignore for a few seconds and provide a toy. If you can replace the object of the pups nipping before it starts wth a toy, even bette,r then lots of praise. Good luck! |
My trainer gave me a great tip for stopping the biting!
When he bites you make your hand into a fist, turn your hand so your thumb is at the top. Don't push your hand into his mouth or anything but hold it there and don't talk to him at all while you do it and he thinks his biting is causing this reaction. This action creates a gag reflex abit like going to the dentist! It took George exactly 3 goes at this and he hasn't bitten since. Be firm but gentle and it really does help. Hope I've explained this ok! |

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are doing a great job. Don't feel guilty about using the crate, the crate is a great training tool and your pup will learn to treat it as his own room and haven. Sounds like you are spending alot of time out of the crate playing and pottying him so he should be fine. |
