Until two weeks ago, when my husband said, "is it possible for a dog to have three testicles?" Seems, when Buff rolled on his back during Sheepie/Dad playtime, Hubby noticed Buff had magically grown another testicle. The vet told us to bring Buff in to be checked early the following morning, even though he thought I was nuts saying my dog had grown a third testicle. However the next morning as the vet checked Buff, his face was full of confusion. He called in his partner and his face was equally baffled. The tissue felt exactly like a testicle. The advice from our vet was to wait and see what happens. So far it's not painful and hasn't grown. So, the million dollar question. Anyone else experienced this oddity? |

Wow, never heard of that.
Let us know what happens. |
Lol. He's all boy-- that's for sure! |
Can't say as I've ever heard of a third testicle. Are they sure they got two the first time? |

That would be my guess too, or possibly scar tissue or an abcess. |
Nope - never heard that one. I would be concerned - more likely there is a growth than a 3rd testicle. Or that they may have missed one during the neuter surgery. Interesting - I would appreciate knowing what the final outcome is. |
My first two thoughts are abscess and missed one the first time.
In my first dog they missed one -they thought they finally found it and removed it, they hadn't- and it remained crypt and became cancerous at the age of 11. If it is a second one that was missed -- good thing it came down on its own! ...and maybe they'll take care of it for free out of embarrassment of their previous malpractice |
This is a slightly different topic, but I'm really confused about this-- We adopted Harley at 3 1/2 years old, and the rescue had him neutered six weeks before we got him. He definitely still has both testicles-- I thought neutering removed them. On older dogs do they do a vasectomy type thing or something? I haven't done any research on neutering, and I've alwalys had female dogs in the past, so I'm probably making myself sound like an idiot, but I thought maybe someone could clear that up for me. |
They should both be gone. Perhaps there is swelling, or perhaps the rescue made a mistake? |
It can happen in humans, so why not doggies? It's called Triorchidism and also Supernumerary testes. I guess it depends on the way he was neutered, did they leave the scrotal sac? Maybe #3 was up hiding from the snippers? If the scrotal sac was remove, I'd think they would have found #3......maybe.
Then again it could be as Ron said, a cyst, swelling or ?? |
Hmmm.... I think I will take him in and ask the vet to do a quick look see. I was there for heartworm but didn't want to make myself look stupid by asking a really dumb question. We do want to be sure he's neutered, though. He's been showing non-neutered behavior (marking, etc.), but I assumed that was because he was neutered so late in life. His vet papers say neutered, but it sure looks otherwise. |
Talk to the rescue first; perhaps their vet would have a looksee for a reduced fee... and redo the operation if they missed. LOL |
Our vet, while looking very puzzled, said he was positive 2 testicles were removed. I'm going with the swelling/scar tissue frame of mind for a couple more weeks. If it's not remarkably different by then, Buff's on his way back to the vet, cause the doctor, he has a lot of esplaining to do! |

I do hope that it's only swelling or scar tissue. |
I have definitely heard of that happening in humans, but never an animal.....why not though, right??? It can happen.
Am I blushing??? |
I think ours is swelling or scar tissue-- I asked a friend for a second opinion, and she thinks that's the most likely explanation. (Plus, I really don't know what I'm looking at ) I do think I'll have our vet double-check on his yearly exam, though. |
Success! Buff looks like the neutered boy that he is. Two days before his vet appointment, the mass started to shrink. The vet was getting anxious because it took soooo long for the issue to resolve. He was almost convinced it was a third testicle.
It's really good to be back on the site long enough to read all of the threads. I did the big lasik thing on Saturday. The doctor said limited computer time for several days and I used most of my hours online working. |
Yay! I am so happy to hear the mass is starting to shrink.
Congrats on your Lasik too. How is your vision? |
Yay for the shrinking testicle!!! ???
Maybe you just can't see the mass now with your new eyes? Or better, maybe it wasn't there, but with your old vision it was? I crack me up. |
Good one Joe,...err Ron! |

Buff seems very relieved, but I think that comes from no longer having a worried person rolling him over, exposing his tummy and touching his parts everyday. Thanks, the Lasik went very well. I had a full list to deal with, farsighted, astigmatism, and presbeopia (old eyes). I now have 20/20. The most difficult part of the whole deal, is training myself not to look for my glasses when I need to read a label or work on the computer. Naw, knew better than rely on my eyesight for something up close, I found it by touch. Kind of a Braille testicle reading. |
