Question for Rescues

Do you place any dogs with small children? I've assumed the role of dog behaviorist in my rescue and I've been setting the standards of what kind of homes the dogs can go in. I have a wonderful sweet Husky/Beagle mix who has resource guarding issues with other dogs (not people) and I have to make a decision on whether to allow him to go to a home with children at all. Right now I have him with no children under 12... what do you guys think?

Actually the only dog I have currently that is allowed with children is a cattle dog mix who is the most laid back and wonderful dog in the world. Do you guys allow ANY dogs to go to homes with small children?

If the dog has resouce guarding issues I definitely wouldn't place him in a home with smaller children.

Some dogs could definitely be placed in homes with smaller children as they are very gentle and calm. Unfortunately a large percentage of the dogs that come into rescue have issues which has led to them being relinquished to shelters or rescues and would not be a good match for a home with small children.

I would definitely go with your gut instinct after evaluating the dog.
I use the following criteria, in order. The first no answer and there is no need to go any further. I would not place that dog with any children under 12. And even if there are no negative answers I would never place a rescue dog with toddlers.

1- Is full history of the dog known? (With pups or very young dogs I am a bit lenient here.)

2- Does this history include young children in the prior household?

3- Did the dog enjoy spending time with the resident children and was not mistreated, or have any negative reaction to them?

4- Does the dog have any resource guarding tendencies at all?

5- Does the dog startle easily or show fearful behavior at strange noises, people or situations?

6- Is the dog trained or shows to be easily trained?

Then there is the type of family to consider. With younger children you also want them to be doggy-savvy, so should have already had a dog in thier lives before. Crate-training is a MUST.

This is my personal checklist. In order for it to succeed both the dog and the family need to be comfortable, and be able to idetify and work things through.

If you would like me to elaborate on reasons for any of these drop me a PM and I would be pleased to assist you with any questions.
Nicole that checklist is great! I've decided that I have to "specially approve" a dog in order for them to be allowed in a home with small children. I'm not a trainer though so I'm going to go with my instincts and be overly cautious.

We're a new rescue, and I'm new to rescue so I appreciate your input!
