We're Back!

Ah...Just when you thought it was safe.....we're baaaaack!

Blue and Panda really enjoyed their two week vacation on a semi-deserted Island located on the West Coast. A bit tedious to get there - two ferries and a small motorboat to finally get to our destination. Panda seemed born to be a "sea dog"! He hopped into the boat as if he had been doing it all his life while Blue trembled and wouldn't even walk down the gang plank nor into the boat and had to be lifted.

Panda swam in the ocean twice daily and although he came when I called him he always seemed to want to stay forever. The wildlife is so abundant on this almost semi-deserted Island (only 30 permanant residents live there all year round) there are hundreds of deer, Eagles, Otters, Turkey Vultures and star fish littering the beaches that were aprox 1 ft across in size!!!

The first hour was fine with no territorial issues with Blue and Panda...in the one room cabin with a bedroom loft accessible by ladder. Urg!!!! Then it started...ole Blue got testy with Panda being in the same room and egads it was only one large open room...and as neither could be up in the bedrooms in the loft...I had to keep them busy. Tired dogs always get along..so that meant lots of trips to the beach for swims and long hikes a few times a day. Having one outside didn't help as the cabin has several french doors to take advantage of the ocean view so they could see each other at all times. Oh woe was me! :?

I'm so tired I need a vacation from my vacation..hee hee. The scary part was one night my son became very ill and as we were literally out in the middle of nowhere, it got my heart racing. Our cabin was located on a cliff overlooking the ocean, aprox a few miles from the dock. As I have no boat and relied on my friend to get us there and the Island has no roads only dirt paths I experienced a bit of a fright. I thought he was having an apendix attack and seriously thought of calling a medivac helicopter to get us off. (I know the symptoms as this happened to me as a young teen) Fortunately the pain was a bit higher up and not on his right side so we suspect it was a bad case of food poisoning. Still it was difficult half carrying my son to my friends home through the thick woods with no flashlight at 3 am in the middle of a storm. yup Murphey's Law I suspect as until then and even after the weather had been very hot and humid.

If calling a medivac helicopter was not feasible we would have had to call the Coast Guard to pick us up and I would have had to leave the dogs on their own until I could return. Overall the experience was a tad scary as I've been visiting there for the past 8 years and hadn't experienced something like that before. This happened a few days before we were due to leave and after two days of recouping he was fine to travel again.

Poor Merlin sounds like a squeak toy when he barks ...so raspy and horse! I didn't pick him up at the kennel as we were delayed by the huge ferry lineups so a friend picked him up for me. The only comment the kennel people made to them was that Merlin sure liked to run and roll in the dirt. I suspect he must have been really dirty as it was obvious they bathe him when my friend called and said he would be picking Merlin up. I know he must have barked and barked as he had almost lost his voice completely!!! I remember one of the members on here wondering if that happened to their dog as well when they left them at a kennel. Any ideas for helping him with this...poor boy he sounds terrible - can't even bark and only a squeak comes out.

Alas my long winded story is coming to a close - thanks for listening everyone and it's good to catch up on all the stories. Welcome to the new people that have arrived since my absence.

Wow Marianne! What a story, and you've got a few! You should write a book....
Welcome back to you and Blue and Panda, and a welcome home to Merlin too!
It sounds beautiful where you were, can I sneak into your suitcase next time? And, um, Dancer and Sky too?
I'm glad your son is ok, that must have been very scary!
As for Merlin's raspy voice, I would suggest giving him ice cubes to play with as often as he is interested, it will help soothe his throat and bring down any inflammation. Dancer loves ice cubes, I give them to her when it's hot if I worry she hasn't been drinking enough water. She bats them around like a cat for a while, picks it up in her mouth and spits it back out several times before she crunches them up.
Anyway, glad to have you back!!! :)
