diarrhea- 11 weeks old

When we got S'more she had an awful case of worms- both round worms and hook worms. She's had pill medicine and a round of liquid. At the second visit the Vet said that she had a bacteria in her stool. We took around a medicine to help with that. Well it's been about a week and the squishy stools are back- worse than before- today it's been like brown water~ :(
Any ideas on what to feed her to stiffen her back up? (Sorry if that sounds awful)
I am going to take the vet another sample tomorrow because she doesn't go in for 12 week shots for another week and I am worried about her-

Anyone else have this?

oh- she's been eating "Blue" dog food.

That's quite dangerous at that age. Definitely follow your vet's advice. Have you talked to your breeder?
I sent you a pm with more info. I would definately go to the Vet in the morning and bring another stool. Meantime, I would stop all food and boil up some plain rice and feed it a little at a time. I added some Pedylite to the water when my pup was sick to avoid dehydration too. If there is an mergency vet in your area, maybe you could call and ask about giving some Pepto and how much according to her weight. They will usually answer questions over the phone.

Be sure to take another stool to the Vet since some worms and parasites are stubborn to some medications and don't alwasy show up in every stool. Your main concern right now should be dehydration. Letting her lick some ice cubes will help to keep her hydrated too.

Good luck.
Now that her stools are so watery, personally because of her being so young, I would not wait another week for the vet to see her. Lil pups go down hill real fast at that age from de-hydration when the poop is so watery.

Personally I think you should schedule a visit to the vet as soon as possible with her.

Keep her fluids up, let her lick iceblocks, don't worry too much about food until you see the vet. Main thing plenty of fluid to stop her dehydrating.

Best wishes and please keep posting on how S'more is going. :(
I agree with Lisa, hydration is most important, no food will allow her system to settle down.
It might be something as simple as the antibiotics for the bacterial infection have killed off all the good gut flora as well, in which case some pro biotics or yogurt might help. I wouldn't give that until you see the vet though, and I don't think it can wait. I'd take her in first thing in the morning if you can.
If she had such an infestation with parasites I'd be very concerned about what else she may have picked up. Parasites severely compromise the immune system.
The Vet can see her tomorrow at 3:00-
She's eating and drinking. Oh and no vomiting.
She seems playful today (Monday) than yesterday.
I made her a bowl of rice last night and mixed it with a little of her dry food. This morning she got another bowl. Hopefully it will help her out.

As for the breeder--- that's a long story.
Nasty, Nasty backyard breeder. It was more of a rescue than anything else. However, I really felt like it was the right thing to do after talking to another breeder that I found on the OES website.

We will get S'more all fixed up. I feel like she's with us for a reason and I know that she loves us already and is grateful to not be where she came from.

Thanks Ron-
I was able to read all the post- I will try the rice water- does she drink it or do you mix it with food-
I am sorry- This is really my first dog as a "grown-up" where I am in charge.
I have had cats for 20 years, but not a dog. (boy does that make me sound old)

I think just plain old rice would work better than rice water. I would only go with rice water if the dog can't eat or is vomiting. JMO
You can even do it with noodles, too. My dogs make such a mess with rice and their beards! Also, I'd stop regular food for a few days-- go to straight rice and boiled hamburger or chicken. I actually have never done the boiling thing myself, but I've had good results Foreman grilling the meat and overdoing it a little to get rid of all the grease and fat.
Let us know how it goes!

Interesting. The rice water has worked wonders for us. I assume it is for the same reason that rice works, obviously the same component is in both.

But assuming that the component comes out into the water during cooking and is then reabsorbed by the rice I would think that the water would work better as it is much more concentrated? I'm thinking the puppy doesn't have to eat bowlsful of rice, just lap up half a cup of water.

It can be almost like a paste when it's cold.

Not saying I'm right, just thinking out loud.
It's the starch component that helps bind, but by actually eating the rice (which includes the water it was boiled in) they also get calories and some nutrition.
Not as much as with just the water alone. However, if a dog should not eat, then it would be a good alternative as it would still privde the starch and some calories without a lot to irritate the digestive tract.

I find it interesting that rice does indeed help firm up loose stools, whereas something like a dentabone or similar product made with almost pure starch has the opposite effect for many dogs.
If it's just starch, why don't I see remedies using/recipes for a water/starch mixture?
I don't think the rice starch actually binds to anything. I was always told that it is low-residue, meaning it is easily digested with very little to pass through. The starch is absorbed, giving a small energy source. And the liquid is also almost completely absorbed.
The idea is that it doesn't stimulate the bowel to start moving like regular food would.

Whatever the reason, it works. :D
Sorry, you are going through this with her. My dogs picked up worms at a doggie day care a few years back and it took three treatments to get rid of them. So I would make sure you keep taking in samples until you are sure the worms are completely gone.

Good luck.
