How much of the new food and the old food would you combine during the transition and for how long? Thanks for your help. |

Recently I was told (by vets) that more expensive/good brands nowadays for a normal dog only take 2 days and not the slow transition of 5-7 days as recommended before. Advice seems to always change!!!
That many good brands are made in a way now that won't affect a dog's tummy. Of course if your dog has a sensitive stomach like mine... I would trust your own judgment and not the recommendation on most bags. I was surprised when a few vets told me because I know that could never apply to my dog. Does your bag have its own recommendation? I throw my bags out when I buy them and transfer the food into ziplock bags (and either freeze or put in storage containers), so sometimes it's hard for me to remember what my bag said. |
I think the slower the better.
Some dogs don't have as hard of a time with it, but I'd hate to find out the hard way if yours does. I would start with just 1/4 cup of the new for a couple days, then half a cup of the new for 2 or 3 days, etc... very slowly... Re newer foods taking less time: I do actually find if you go from lower protien to higher protien there is less of a problem and the transition can be done a little faster. |
I think it depends on your dog's constitution. When we've switched Barney's food a few times, I've started with about 3/4 'old' food to 1/4 new food and keep it at that for maybe 2 days and then 1/2 and 1/2 for 2 days, then just mix the remaining old and new food and leave it at that. Barney has a very strong stomach, though...not sensitive at all (as far as I can tell!).
If your puppy has a sensitive stomach, definitely the slower the better...I mean, there's no rush to switch. |
I saw a great chart on this the other day. It may have been in a magazine. I'll look when I get home. |
