http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Sa ... 3350366896 Claire Ward fought a pit bull in an attempt to save her 14-month-old Cardigan Welsh corgi. "I gouged his eyes. I stuck my fingers in his nostrils. I bit him," Ward said. Her hands bear bite marks from the struggle with the full-grown male. "I was doing everything I could to get Barney free." Using the program dial on her cell phone, which lay in her gravel driveway as she fought the dog, she called 911 five times, screaming for help, Ward said. Forty-five minutes passed before an animal-control officer and then police arrived, she said. Efforts to reach Richmond animal-control officials for comment last night were unsuccessful. "I was still on top of the dog when animal control arrived," Ward said last night. "I was getting my second wind and wondering what I would do when he got his second wind." The pit bull attacked Ward's corgi Wednesday about 8 p.m. in the driveway of her South Richmond home on Collier Hill Road overlooking Falling Creek Reservoir. The pit bull apparently was chained up at the next-door neighbor's house but had broken free, said Ward, a project manager for Genworth Financial. The corgi suffered several puncture wounds as well as a broken foreleg and a broken hind leg. He died yesterday morning at a Chesterfield County veterinary hospital. "He was very swollen and in a lot of pain," said Amanda Dunford, Ward's friend and veterinarian's assistant. "The key point was we were trying to stabilize him and get him out of pain. He stopped breathing, and we could not revive him." While fighting the dog, Ward called Dunford, who lives about 2 miles from Ward's home. "When I got there, she [Claire] was laying on top of the pit bull," Dunford said. She said her husband also called 911, trying to get help. Dunford said she picked up Barney and got into her Chevy Tahoe SUV, where she sat with the dog on her lap. An animal-control officer arrived a few moments later and captured the pit bull. Dunford said she believes the pit bull had been trained to fight dogs. "When she let him up, he was wagging his tail," Dunford said. "I honestly believe he thought he was doing a good thing." Elizabeth Hall, another friend of Ward's, drove to Richmond from Washington on Wednesday night to be with Ward. Hall said she confronted the neighbor yesterday about the dog, but he denied it was his. Ward said there had been problems about a year ago with pit bulls at her neighbor's house and animal control removed them. Ward was treated Wednesday night at VCU Medical Center, where the bites were cleaned, and she was given a tetanus shot and a shot of antibiotics. Ward, a cellist, said, "I won't be playing the cello for a while." "All I can see when I close my eyes is Barney on the ground," she said "All I can smell is blood and dog urine, and I hear his screams." |

OMG, this sent shivers down my spine. That poor woman, having to watch her dog being killed like that. And that poor dog!! I can still hear the cries of Mandy's Carl when he was attacked by a pit bull in the Philly dog park. It truly is bone chilling. Please give your friend my heartfelt condolences. |
How terrible. Why do people encourage violence in their dogs? It baffles me. Give your friend some hugs. |
That's horrible. |
How horrible. Please send my condolences to your friend.
Apparently the neighbors train their pit bulls to attack, seeing as this has happened before. I hope the pit bull is put down and I wish the neighbors could be put down as well. |
That's horrible. I'm so sorry for her loss |
That's so sad. |
What a nightmare! My condolences to your friend. |
Shocking !!! Things like that have been in the papers over here (UK) Pitbulls are now illegal and have to be handed in. Please send my condolances to you friend |
That really brought back memories of our incident. How
sad for her, how horrible for the dog. If in fact this dog did come from an owner who has had pitbull 'problems' in the past, that is even worse. These are the people who have destroyed the reputation and ruined any decent blood lines there once were. I just feel there is no excuse for owners who have dogs they have no clue about controlling. If you own one of these powerful breeds you really have to know what you are doing. If the dog was trained to fight, the owner should be put away. So very sad. I am so sorry this happened. She may never be able to stop hearing her dog cry, or stop seeing it when she closes her eyes. How do you live with that? Shellie |
Hi,
I'm so sorry your friend had to go through this. I can't imagine the pain she must be feeling both physically but more so emotionally. Please give her my condolences. Marianne |
That is so sad Ughh.. I hate hearing things like this. Even when I try to be positive about pit bulls, stories like this make me even more reluctant to let Yuki go near one. |
So so sad - if I see any kind of pitbul or staffordshire terrier, Ollie goes straight on a lead - a staffy really laid into Ollie a while ago, poor little boy was petrified. |
Please pass on my condolences to your friend. She has lost a member of her family and the pain has to be worse due to the traumatic circumstances. |
What a horrible tragedy. Please give your friend my condolances.
Honestly, I feel sorry for the poor pitbull, too. He was obviously trained to do this and thought he was doing a good job. Now he'll be put down for doing what some human trained him to do. What a terribly sad situation for all concerned. |
How very VERY sad and so unecessary. |
I dont even know what to say, except, Im sorry....wow, that is a dog owners worst nightmare. Please give her my condolences.... |
OMG! I'm so sorry for your friend. Please convey my sympathy to her. How awful |

So sad. My heart goes out to your friend. |
I am so very sorry to hear of your friend and her pets pain, please give her my condolances |
That is so sad! For everybody. Your poor friend for having to hear all of that and losing such a baby, for the corgi, and for the pitbull. I have known many wonderful pitbulls with wonderful owners. It's a shame to such a wonderful breed that someone had to go and make things worse for them.
Again, sorry for your friends loss. |
I am so sorry for your friend. I hope you are able to be of some comfort to her during this time and hopefully she knows there are a lot of people that send their good wishes her way for her tragic loss. |
