Stairs

Please help, my oes, Chpin, is 3 1/2 months and afraid to go up or down stairs. As I live in an apartment it is important for him to travel the three flights for potty time, he is getting heavy and I will not be able to cary him very much longer. What is the best way to teach him how to use the stairs? I apprecite all the help and advice.

I don't know if this will help or not...Do you know of another dog that your pup likes, who can go up and down the stairs with him? Our pup came to us at 6 months, and had never used stairs before. He was scared at first, but it was seeing our older dog Abby go calmly up and down, that very quickly convinced him to try it out! :)
Put to-die-for treats every couple of steps?
The treat method worked for me. It was not a sheepie though but a 5 months old Golden Retriever. It's my boss's dog which he brings to work sometimes (my boss let me bring my Clayden with me everyday).

Our office is on the second floor of a bank. I volunteered to take the pup down to go potty. At first I had to carry him up and down. Then one morning when the bank wasn't even opened yet, I took some treat with me. We started at the bottom of the stairs. I put a couple of treats on the forth steps where he could almost reach without climbing. I let him get it and I praised him lavishly. After repeating a few times, I put it one more step higher. He then had to climb one step without even knowing it. He was reaching it with the front paws and his back paws automatically helped himself to climb up a step.

After a few times, I put one treat the same place and another one two more steps higher....on and on... This little guy is very smart. He learned it pretty quick. He basically learned it in one session!

Hi,

It's almost the same thing teaching a pup as a tot to go downstairs as in my case I did the same thing. I had a baby gate and only placed it 2-3 stairs up or down. The level to originally get used to, is not that bad..for pups stick a treat on the top step where gate is placed- going up. (Up is always easier for them so best to start with that first.)

May take a bit of coaxing the first couple times but they soon become confident. You then move the gate..4-5 steps...add treat on top step or sit on it yourself and call him. Lots of praise. Next time or after a couple days..once again move the baby gate up a few steps and stand where the gate is and call him. Repeat the procedure...treat or you sitting on the step.

Then when pup is confident going up...do the down method the same way. This one is more difficult for them ..so place baby gate perhaps 2 steps down the first time..let pup get used to it. Then move gate down a few steps as the days go by. Be consistent and eventually they get over the fear.

Someday he may suprise you...just walk into the house and don't look back..he'll whine perhaps and follow you.

Raven's suggestion was good, it's much easier if they have a role model that they see doing something.

Good Luck!

Treats worked for us, too!
Can't beat the treat. :excited: :excited: :excited:
A strong smelling treat on every few stairs
and make sure his hair is tied
back and out of his eyes.

Be patient, if they are steep stairs it will take
a while for him to be confident.
It worked, he goes up and down them now like a pro, he has even learned the word upstairs and all I need do is say "Chopin, lets go upstairs" and he leads me to the top. Thanks all
Congratulations! :clappurple: Good job for making mama proud, Chopin
