Irritated Paw

Wilbur has been chewing one of his pads for the past couple of days. Today I was able to get a good look at it and deep inside, it is very pink and looks like now it is bleeding from his chewing. Before he went at it, it seems to have less hair and sort of looked like bright pink chicken skin-nothing like his other paws.

Any ideas before I take him to the vet?

Thanks.

I can't offer any help just wanted to let Wilbur know Dutch and I are sending good thoughts his way :D
One possible cause could be allergies...or boy Spencer had them, and paw-licking was one of his symptoms :(
Barkley had a little scab between his paw pads that was there for longer than a week so we started to wonder if it was irritated and not healing properly.

We showed it to a friend (who used to have an OES) and she could tell by the hair discolouration (hair had turned reddish brown) that Barkley had been chewing on his foot.

She recommended Tea Tree Oil (mixed with water). Tea tree oil acts as a deterrant so he won't want to chew on his foot. It also works as an antiseptic and helps healing. We bought a bottle of pure tea tree oil from the pharmacy and mixed it in a small spritzer with water (90% water, 10% oil) to squirt between the toe pads.

She did warn us to only spray it when we'll be around to monitor him (i.e. don't spray right before leaving for work). Not sure why.

I think they also make a spray for hotspots that contains tea tree oil, but I'm sure it's much more expensive than the home-remedy.
Thanks everyone.

The hair is discoloured so I know he is chewing on it a lot. I will try the tea tree oil.

I hope he doesn't have allergies but when I google it, that comes up often. But he is only going after the one paw.

If it doesn't clear up, I will take him to the vet.

I don't know if this was just my dog or not, but when I used tea tree oil on my first oes, she ran around acting like we had set her on fire, yelping etc...
We never tried it again. I think it stung.
Oh o. Wilbur seems tender. I don't want him to freak out.

There is a girl at our training whose dog had a tender foot and then she found out it was warts?? And I asked if it was contagious and she said yes. Perfect. But there doesn't seem to be any bumps on his paw. But her dog didn't have any either. Heard of that before?
Tea tree oil probably does sting on broken skin. I haven't tried it yet for myself, but one of my old roommates used it on herself quite a bit. Good for healing scars, etc. and I think she used it on cuts too.

Barkley is bothered a little but no pain when we spray it. I think he's just bothered by the smell. It's so watered down and he doesn't have any broken skin so I'm sure it doesn't sting.

Don't know anything about warts, sorry. Hopefully your vet will be able to figure out what it is.
I've washed the paw with warm water and dry throughly.
Then apply a thin layer of Bag balm.
This what has worked for us in the past.

I keep him
out of the tall grass and bryers, too.
You have to be very careful with tea tree oil and dogs, there has been reports that it can be quite toxic to them if not mixed at the right strength.

Aloe Vera Gel is great and if they lick it, not toxic to them, you can also try some baby rash powder inbetween the pad to help keep it dry and help heal it up too.

The trouble is the licking, keeps it moist and usually causes a secondary problem because of the constant licking. Try a sock on his paw to stop him licking it constantly till it settles down.
Our last OES was allergic to grass believe it or not. In the spring and summer when we would mow the grass she would get itchy paws and bite at them too. We used Mineral Oil on them to sooth the skin. Not the baby oil kind but the perfume free all natural stuff ( Target brand is cheap). We also used to get an allergy pill from the vet that we gave her when it got bad. Puppy Benadril.
The vet also gave us cream to put on and we put socks on her feet to keep the moisture in. That didn't last long she took them all off. Now Breena would let us do that she loves to play dress up. Hats, socks you name it.
But I'd check with the vet yours may be allergic to grass too.
Here is a link on Tea tree oil so if anyone is using it, just be careful with the amount and where you apply it, no area where a dog can lick it.

Could be the salt on the sidewalks and roads?

You could try a bit of vaseline or paw wax on the paws before going outside?
