Strong Herding Instinct - I think?

We have a four month old female, Daisy-May. Very playful and a smoocher. Loves to go for walks. She did well with the leash from day one. Problem is she bolts for cars, trucks, and generally anything that is moving quickly within her line of sight. Now that she is putting on weight, her strength is growing. Need suggestions on curtailing this behavior. This is my third OES. The two previous OES didn't exhibit this behavior.

Definitely dangerous! I would suggest a halti or gentle leader , or harness, or possibly a prong collar to try to curtail this behavior. Has the pup had obedience training? Dancer pulls a lot too, only recently and she is 7 months old. They are very strong dogs! She also has a very strong herding instinct, and tries to keep all of my family in the same room.LOL
Welcome to the forum, by the way! :)
Do you have any pics of your fur baby? :)
Obedience Training is scheduled. Not sure how to input a picture of Daisy permanetly. How did you add yours? :)
If you go to your profile you can add an avatar (the small picture to go beside your name)
There are instructions as to the size you can use, and you just need to use whatever picture software you have to shrink it down to the appropriate size. :)
I would recommend a halti or similar collar too! You don't want her to be able to slip out of her collar - and I know from experience it can happen very easily! The Halti should be fitted properly in order to work without harming her. At 4 months old - she probably won't need anything as drastic as the prong collar but if you don't get this under control - that could be an option.

I would walk her and any time a car passes - tell her to SIT and reward her. Get her attention towards you and aware from the passersby. It is a very common behavior with OES - and it is because of the herding instinct.

The training class (I hope it's Positive Reinforcement) will do alot to help as well!

Good Luck

DWK-

My Lola has the same issue. She is 6mos now. When I started my latest obedience class, my trainer said the pinch(prong) collar was okay (she was about 5mos then). It has helped a lot. She was pulling and lunging a lot and with the pinch on she doesn't pull nearly as much.

Also, someone had another post on this earlier and gave a good suggestion. Take the pup where there is some traffic, but have them sit a bit removed. Reward them. Then move a couple of feet closer have them sit again. I have done this as well (we live a block from a very busy street) I have her sit about 30 feet from the corner then 10 then about 5 feet. She sits and I tell her to stay and I just calmly tell her good girl, easy and stroke her. She still is very excited when watching the cars go by, but she doesn't lunge anymore. I think it's helping.

Good luck.

I bought a halti for Dancer, and it doesn't work at all. I've never seen it not work....lol.... figures it would be MY dog who is the exception!
She goes nuts with it on, pulls even harder and bucks like a crazy horse. I'm going to keep trying to get her used to it though....
if you're worried about your pup slipping her collar, buy a martingale no slip collar ;)
What about a Gentle Leader...not sure how different it is from Halti...We have had great success with it! It takes a little while for both dog & upright to get use to though...it took furever to get the right fit & of course I kept getting her FUR caught in the snap...OWWWEEE momma! :)
Halti is the same as gentle leader from what I can see, just different brand name....
halti is essentially the same thing, just has an extra strap on it from the piece that goes over the muzzle to the one that goes behind the ears. i have used both, and prefer the gentle leader, it's just more expensive.

Our old english sheepdog is 7 months to he did pull too but now we have been using a check chain (not sure if you have those in Canada) and it has been a god send! Highly recommend also is the halti we tried but were told if you use a halti now they will always need a halti.
