burying food

Quick question... I know that some dogs bury things and I've been researching possible causes, but Benson has this new thing where he buries little handfuls of food here and there throughout the house, where ever he things they might belong:). He gets plenty of food so I'm not sure why he does this. One trainer had suggested taking his food up after a few minutes if he doesn't eat it right away, but that just made me feel bad. Maybe I'm a softy, well I am, but does anyone have similar problems and what can I do to stop the never-ending presents he leaves everywhere?

I have no idea, but it's funny and cute
Izzie doesn't do anything like that with food, but does like to hide and save her rawhide bones for later. She usually buries them in a basket full of matches or between the sofa cushions. She recently tried to hide her stuffed/sqeaky sheep between the sofa cushions. Needless to say she was not successful

How long has he been hiding the food? Does he start as soon as you put the food down? If not, maybe only leave it down for 1/2 hour or hour...whenever he usually starts to disperse it.
Benny also buries bones and toys in the bed and between the couch cushions. He's so funny. I really feel like sometimes he's trying to tell me something. Especially when I find his bone underneath my pillow or under the covers. These dogs have so much personality I can't even believe it. Even with all of the behavior problems we've had with Benny being a rescue dog, I couldn't imagine life without his little antics
I think your trainers suggestion to take up the food is your best bet. You're not starving your furkiddo just because they don't eat a meal. If they are really hungry, they will eat the next time you bring out the food.. ...or the time after that. ;)

Or you could watch your dog, and when he starts to eat, be there to say NO ...EAT (or whatever) when he tries to take it somewhere.

Or accept it
Many years ago, I set a package of chicken breasts on the kitchen counter for a few minutes. They disappeared, including the wrapper.
We looked all over the house, in the usual hiding places. We couldn't figure out what Maudie did with the chicken and wrappers so quickly.

As newlyweds, still in college, our furniture was the usual hand-me-downs. In fact, our sofa was actually a twin bed with cushions. Have you figured out where she hid it yet? As soon as it started smelling, we were able to find it. 8O Under the cushions, behind the bed, trapped up against the wall.

And then there was the time she hid biscuits in our closet.
Having multiple sheepies in the house, treats and food get eaten quickly before one of the others can get it. The picture you have painted in my mind has me chuckling. You have quite a character there.
My furkiddo has cancer and is undergoing chemo. She has lost her appetite and is losing weight so we decided to pullout the big guns and purchase beaver meat in a can and wild salmon oil. She gets tired easily so I put the bowl of golden food on her bed. She ate what she could and then started pushing her blanket over the bowl. I took the bowl away, brought it back again, she sniffed the bowl and started trying to bury it again. She loves this food, but i think she was full.
So if your dog is burying their dinner you might be putting too much food in their bowl. It is a good idea to have a bowl that is just big enough for the correct amount of food so that you don't put to much food down for your pup. This will also reduce the amount of guilt you might have. :)
try to put food for 15 min if eat ok, if he dont aet juste remove dish away from him. In that case he wil not have anything to hide for later :D
I see he is traveling around the house incognito as well..you forgot to mention that.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. Since we live in NY and the ground seems to be muddy all year, we keep a towel by the door to wipe his paws. The towel also happens to be near his food dish so we picked up the towel and, voila, no burying... duh!! Of course he still leaves little nuggets here and there, but we've come to accept it as part of his personality. I am in love with this breed and wish we could handle another. They are so much fun:) Thanks for your help :D
