What brand of food do you all use? Also, I read somewhere that OES males should have about 5 cups of food per day... is that correct? How often should he be fed? (btw, I don't have my dog yet. I'll be sure to know all this BEFORE bringing him home ) |

It really depends on the dog, it's size full grown etc... OES can vary a great deal.
As far as brands, you'll get a lot of different answers there too. I feed a mix of Iams and Eukanuba and my dogs do very well on it. I've tried many brands, from cheap to ultra expensive, and this is what I always come back to. As far as amounts... one of my girls eats about 3 cups a day but is a bit overweight, another girl eats about 4 cups a day and is just right, my 5 month old boy eats about 6 cups a day but he is still growing... etc... |
The times this has been asked before, I'd easily say on average the majority of people here feed their ADULT OES' 3-4 cups a day. I remember several threads where even the heaviest "healthy" OES' ...were getting 4 cups a day according to their owners.
It will totally depend on what you are feeding and how your dog responds to it though, as earlier mentioned by Willowsprite. I tend to think many OES' are overweight but looked at as healthy by their owners. I'm not saying anyone on this board, ...that's just my view of OES' in general. However, I believe from research and recommendations that both cats and dogs should have an athletic skinny build. |

I know many people can confuse that with allowing their dog to get overweight, but shouldn't an OES have an athletic sturdy/stocky build? Like able to feel the spine and ribs and stuff, but not thin-looking...(And I'm totally asking--I definitely don't know the answer) |

Straight from the standard: Quote: A strong, compact, square, balanced dog. Taking him all around, he is profusely, but not excessively coated , thickset, muscular and able-bodied. |
Sorry I worded what I meant wrong. I mean at whatever build your dog naturally is... should still be able to feel ribs, should still be skinny... Even if they are built with a large/medium/xl frame. Too many people try to get that build described in the standard by keeping their dog "fat." |
