1. So first let me get this straight- you give a command and once the dog does it, you click and then reward with a treat/pet/etc. Correct? 2. As a reward does petting work as well at treats? I'm very involved in agility and giving a treat after every correct thing would be alot of treats! Thanks for your guy's help! |

I don't do clicker training, but I did a bit years ago with my great dane.
I believe the idea is to click and treat when the dog automatically does something you want at first and then turn it into a command? I'm not sure, hopefully somoene more knowledgeable will post as well. |
More the click, then treat straight away. Patting them as a reward seems to distract them
Eventually when they get use to the clicker training you don't even have to even treat them. They just do for the click. |
Nicole (Bosleys Mom) could probably answer all your questions. She put on a cool clicker demonstration at the MI picnic last year. |
What is clicker training? Here is an article---
http://www.clickertraining.com/what_is_clicker_training Please see the video in the above link. http://www.clickerdogs.com/# -has some good articles http://www.clickertraining.com/dogtraining I used Karen Pryor's books as the trainer we used was trained in her technique. Her books are easy to understand and fun. It takes patience to train this way, but the lessons seem to really "take". Bogart was trained as a puppy to wait on his rug for me before he goes out for a walk, and he does it like clockwork every time. (he is almost 3 yrs old now ) Have fun with the training. Use a real super desirable treat in very small amounts. And only give that treat when clicker training. That tip is from our instructor. re agility training with clicker-- http://www.clickertraining.com/agility Good luck and have fun training! |
I agree that Karen Pryor's book is great. The "trick" to mastering clicker training is in the timing of the click. Karen Pryor's book explains it.
I've trained to a CD title using the "old fashion" motivational methods and am just learning about this clicker training now. From what I hear, it is a great way to train! Good luck. |
