May 12, 2007 Royal Canin Sensible Choice and Kasco DRY foods have been added to the recall. Please visit the Royal Canin website for the latest details. Source: http://www.royalcanin.us/ April 30, 2007 The contaminated proteins have made their way into the human food supply chain, but the FDA does not issue a recall WASHINGTON, April 30, 2007 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have learned that byproducts from pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten imported from China have been used in chicken feed on some farms in the state of Indiana. This information came to light as part of the continuing investigation into imported rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten that have been found to contain melamine and melamine-related compounds. At this time, the investigation indicates that approximately 30 broiler poultry farms and eight breeder poultry farms in Indiana received contaminated feed in early February and fed it to poultry within days of receiving it. All of the broilers believed to have been fed contaminated product have since been processed. The breeders that were fed the contaminated product are under voluntary hold by the flock owners. As with exposure from hogs fed contaminated pet food and for similar reasons related to the dilution of the contamination, FDA and USDA believe the likelihood of illness after eating chicken fed the contaminated product is very low. Because there is no evidence of harm to humans associated with consumption of chicken fed the contaminated product, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals is being issued. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01621.html April 27, 2007 FDA Issues import alert affecting all vegetable proteins from China REASON FOR ALERT: In recent weeks, there has been an outbreak of cat and dog deaths and illness associated with pet food manufactured with vegetable proteins contaminated with melamine and melamine related compounds. In response to this outbreak, FDA has been conducting an aggressive and intensive investigation. Pet food manufacturers and others have recalled dog and cat food and other suspect products and ingredients. This has been one of the largest pet food recalls in history, a recall that continues to expand. Thus far, 18 firms have recalled product, 17 Class I and 1 class II, covering over 5,300 product lines. As of April 26, 2007, FDA had received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately 1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs. The Agency is working with federal, state, and local governments, academia, and industry to assess the extent of the outbreak, better understand how melamine and melamine related compounds contributed to the pet deaths and illnesses, and to determine the underlying cause of the contamination. As of April 26, 2007, FDA had collected approximately 750 samples of wheat gluten and products made with wheat gluten and, of those tested thus far, 330 were positive for melamine and/or melamine related compounds. FDA had also collected approximately 85 samples of rice protein concentrate and products made with rice protein concentrate and, of those tested thus far, 27 were positive for melamine and/or melamine related compounds. FDA's investigation has traced all of the positive samples as having been imported from China. http://www.fda.gov/ora/fiars/ora_import_ia9929.html April 27, 2007 Blue Buffalo Recalls Can and Biscuit Products Due To Tampering By American Nutrition Inc. The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine. March 30th:On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities. See http://www.purina.com/Company/Press/2007/MightyDog.aspx March 28th: NBC News is reporting the FDA has recorded 7,000 complaints. Just a quick update: The Rat poison has been identified as aminopterin in the pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 dogs and cats. Since the identification, MENU FOODS HAS CHANGED THE RECALL TO INCLUDE ALL WET FOODS THEY PRODUCED ON ALL DATES. Purina Foods has not (yet) expanded the dates of their own precautionary recall of some Mighty Dog products. Symptoms of aminopterin poisoning include: Vomiting (Usually the first sign) Lethargy (fatigue - your dog tires more easily than normal, or just wants to lay around more than normal) Refusal to eat Excessive drinking or thirst Excessive urination Unfortunately, many dogs who have exhibited no signs of poisoning and have no symptoms have been brought to their vets by "nervous" owners -- only to find abnormal kidney function. Officials are unsure of the course of kidney damage from this product because they don't know the dosages received. From one of our member's experience with her poisoned dog: uppetybup wrote: What I do know is that they released her because after the I.V. flush all of her 'levels' returned to normal within about 12 hours. IF the toxin is still in her system those levels will again rise, so she is being re-tested for everything in 3 days time, IF the toxin has been successfully flushed she will remain at normal levels and continue to do so. This is where I am serious about everyone spreading the word, had we NOT taken our girl in [even though she had NO symptoms] those levels very well could have continued to rise until a fair amount of damage to the kidney system and tissue had already been done. The flushing not only spared her life (BIG picture) but having it done early may prevented her from dealing chronic kidney disease. Also- it should be noted, Chelsea didn't recieve 'unusual' treatment, this is how the hospital would have treated a number of different poision or toxin problems. I still really don't think they have a lot of clear cut answers on how to solve this problem, there is no antidote, there is no prevention, except to not eat the food. I was just going to post this info...My news report said they were thinking it might be linked to the wheat gluten ingredient. Apparently this ingredient was made using a differnt source than they were using before...although they are limiting it right now to "wet" dog food, I would suggest anyone using this Iams/Eukanuba, as well as any other food bought at Wal-Mart under a different name, call the toll free number. I have a feeling there will be other brands listed tomorrow..
They will be listed tomorrow at 6 am at www.menufoods.com/recall |
I have a couple of cans of Iams left here, I've been adding it to Sky's food for months now.
I checked the cans and they do not have the codes listed, but I'm not feeding anymore til I see the official release tomorrow morning at 6am. |
It says that a full list of brand names and lot numbers that this recall covers will be posted on the Menu Foods website early Saturday.
http://www.menufoods.com/recall So far it says testing has not yet found any problems with the product. Oops... sorry, I didn't see you already posted that. |

They will be listed tomorrow at 6 am at www.menufoods.com/recall It is NOT limited to Iams/Eukanuba. It states in every news article it includes 17 of the top 20 in North America, Iams and Eukanuba so far are the only ones named. This is a company contracted out by many, many other pet food companies to make their wet food for them. They ONLY manufacture canned food. I would suggest not feeding canned food period, of any brand, until all brands are listed tomorrow morning. |
Yes, Willowsprite. Not limited to Iams/Eukanuba...but for now limited to "wet" food...sorry I wasn't clear. And I would agree not to feed any canned food until the details are posted...
What bothers me is they make mention of complaints going back to December...this is March...waht took them so long |
Where the heck is this number? Underneath the can? I have several Iams wet food for the cats as a special treat. Shoot... can, pouch. Had some for the dogs but I think I used them all because I can't find any in the closet. ...but I keep food in the baby's closet too, so some could be in there. That's downstairs though, and I'm not in the mood to look now.
numbers underneath my can are 180508 us61593 P63 61384583N1 1811 then i also see 19014 29636 |
Folks,
don't anyone get into a panic until AFTER they post the numbers tomorrow morning! As far as *I* am concerned, I have fed Iams/Euk. for 27 years now. I don't intend to change. However, I don't feed canned food at all here. Wait until you get all the information. Here is what has been posted: *MSNBC.com* ----------------------------- 60 million containers of pet food recalled Store brands sold at Wal-Mart and Safeway tied to kidney failure, deaths The Associated Press Updated: 4:21 p.m. ET March 16, 2007 A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths. An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said. "At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein. The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said. Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site 97 www.menufoods.com/recall =97 early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738. The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said. Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness. "To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said. The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said. Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada. Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million. Menu Foods also private labels for IAMS and Eukanuba as well as other = companies. The list will be up on their web site by 6AM on 17 March = 2007. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/ |
The two cans I have here have the codes:
060608 US61593 P83 61574583N2 1508 other can: 110109 US61593 P81 70114583N2 0645 I think the plant code is the digits before the N |
So that would make your second can possibly bad right since it falls within the two numbers? 7011
just making sure i got it right... |
I guess... I really don't know... have no clue how to read those darn codes.
Anyone? Does someone have a better understanding of these kinds of codes? |
Just set the cans aside for now... DON'T even open the can until this company provides more details on what wet products are affected. It's all just a guess until they provide full details. Again, remember that testing hasn't yet found any cause for illness.
The Beneful scare turned out to be illnesses/deaths contributed to other causes... this situation actually has gotten to the recall stage so if you have any cans/pouches of this food, call the number tomorrow to see if the company can assist you in determining if your product is subject to the recall. |
Is that link working for everyone else? It doesn't for me. |
Yes to link, but if you can't get it to work, Ali posted the article. |
I was more interested in the list tomorrow. |
The lists are now online... this precautionary recall affects only specific wet varieties of DOG food labeled with 46 different brand names... the same applies for 37 different CAT brands. I was surprised to see a few Nutro varieties also listed. Each brand probably has recall info on their own websites. A couple of examples are below.
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Press_R ... 162007.pdf "...The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands..." If you open the files, there is a table that shows the production date, best by date, product code, description, size, upc, and brand name. REMEMBER... not all varieties of wet food are affected by this recall... only those they indicate on the lists below. Dog Foods- http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html Cat Foods- http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html While Iam's and Eukenuba are not listed on the Menu Foods website, Iam's has it's own page for this voluntary recall. A link is on the page below on how to read the label's coding- Specific Canned and Small Foil Pouch ‘Wet’ Cat and Dog Foods Link to Iams.com Nutro- http://www.nutroproducts.com/menufoods.asp |
One last thing... the Menu Foods list does not appear to include some of the major dog food brands. So if you feed wet food, take an extra minute to be sure it's not being recalled. Do a quick search search of the mfr's. website for whatever wet brand you feed to see if by chance it's affected by this recall. Again, not all varieties are affected and it's only products produced on specific dates.

I had a bought some Nutro chicken and rice chunks in gravy, and the date on the bottom was Aug 09...so we are safe here. Thanks for the link. |
So after all that, Eukanuba and Iams aren't on the list?
This is all confusing... edit: Ali .......so lucky!!! i'm glad you'll be with your husband. Sigh... I hope you to have lots of fun together. My heart just melted when I read that. |
They're not on the list, but they did a voluntary recall... it is confusing. |
Quote: They're not on the list, but they did a voluntary recall... it is confusing. You're correct... the list provided above is not complete and I cannot understand why. Take the additional step as I did and check for yourself to see if any wet foods you feed your dogs or kitties are included. Quote: So after all that, Eukanuba and Iams aren't on the list?
This is incorrect. Visit the links I provided above or below. It states the following on the IAMS and EUKENUBA websites... This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-882-1591 or visit www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for details. Review the list of involved products here. I have several CASES of pouch kitty food my mom got for me. Sure it was free for her, but I hope when I go downstairs to check, it's not on the list. I like free. |
Some of our special treats for the kitties are on that list . . . Good thing it's not their normal diet! |
Just a note, as of this afternoon, Purina recalled as a "cautionary measure" their Purina Mighty Dog canned and Hills prescription also voluntarily recalled their canned food...go to their websites for specific information....
So, what is behind all this? Is there a common ingredient that went bad in the processing? That's the info I really want to know.... In researching, I found Diamond Foods also recalled their food back in December....never even hear of that recall...scary stuff.... |
I panicked when I saw the newsreport even before they posted exactly which brands as I had just been to Walmart the previous day for my huge monthy pet shopping. Pick up food for cats, bunny, guinea pig, and dogs plus assorted toys and treats.
I rarely buy canned food for the boys but did for the first time in ages and the name is on the list. Luckily I hadn't opened them yet. I have the willies just thinking about it. Marianne |
