These things take time. If the President had told people up front that "we need to do this, and it's likely we will be there for 30 years to provide support for the new government" what do you think the US political environment would be like today? Would the conversation be different? |

Not too much different imo.
I mean.. it's pretty much understood "now" by both republicans and democrats that agree or disagree w/the war, we can't just PULL OUT. There would be more consequences ...to a magnitude no one would want to see. They would face the same problems that they do now. How the hell can we train these iraqi officials, security, etc so they can take over their own country. Even with the training, there's the number we're capable of training at one time. Then there's the people within the govt (that go to the very highest of ranks) that are actually terrorists. I honestly have no idea how we will see success in Iraq. There are too many generations (decades and centuries) of hate and culture that does not match up with what they'd like to see happen to Iraq, the people, and govt. I don't know though... |
We are having the same thing in OZ, troops stay or go. How long should they be there, when should they withdrawal from the country. No one knows the answer to that one. |
