Here is what I am trying to do: Miley at end of 6 ft lead in a down. I give stay command and Miley is staying (okay lets pretend she does it right) I reward with Good Girl and I would normally treat but this is where I don't know what to do. How do you treat if you are on the other end of a long lead? Or in this instance do you start to forgoe treat rewards? Thanks |

You don't praise and treat until you return to the dog. You are teaching the dog to stay there until you come back and release them. You don't want to release from a distance. |
Yep, just smile nice while you are at the end of the leash. Praise after you are back and have given your release command. |
I also learned that a proper stay is when the dog stays until you give the "release" command.
So I say (1) I say "stay" while she's lying on my left (2) Step away 1 feet from her (3) Come back to my original postition (4) say" Good girl!" then treat her. (5) If she looks antsy, I say "release" and we go for a 10 feet walk. Then I start building the distance... always coming back to the original position to say, "good girl," treat her, then say "release" |
