Very exciting! The most important part of getting your new puppy is choosing a good, responsible breeder. OES can have many possible health issues so you want to make sure that your breeder is aware of and testing for a whole variety of potential problems, (hips, eyes, deafness, etc.). I would start with the Old English Sheepdog Club of America and get their list of breeders who have signed their code of ethics and have agreed to abide by the standards set by the national club. They have breeders throughout the country so you should be able to find one in your area.
Here are a couple of links that might help: Tips on Buying a Puppy Breeder Referral List Good luck! Please come back and share pictures when you get your puppy! |
Hi and welcome to the forum. I really am not knowledgable about breeders, Val has given you some great resources.
But, from reading the problems people have had on this forum it seems to me that your #1 important thing when chosing a breeder is "support after the sale". Does your breeder provide you with information and support for the lifetime of your dog (a good breeder will). How long is the health guarantee and what does the guarantee cover? No breeder can promise that a dog will NEVER get sick but a reputable breeder will stand behind their dog, taking it back if it developes a genetic problem (or help with the medical bills) within a certain time period. Good Luck!! |
Hi, I'm not a breeder even though I would love to be one day. But I have a GF that got a puppy from a good breeder and shes not able to keep her. She is only 12 weeks old and is very loving. You can PM me if you are interested. |

A good breeder would take a puppy back. Reputable breeders are willing to take their dogs back at any time during their lives. I would be concerned about any breeder that wouldn't. |
Yeah the breeder would take her back, But she wont give her money back. |

Sorry EnglishSheepie, not true in many cases. Our breeder has taken dogs back and paid the full amount to do so in a circumstance where the individual was unable to care for the dog. Please know that there are many professional breeders who care about their dogs and take responsibility for them if the buyer is unable to continue to care for them. |
I just got into helping people find homes for OES that they arent able to keep and I see that its a real problem here in South Carolina. And this breeder said unless there is a health issue with the dog that she will not refund her money. Thats what is in the contract. Anyways I have another post going about this puppy and I dont want to get in trouble. |

Good luck with your OES rescue work, best wishes in finding a great home for your current rescue OES. |

Hi I am an owner of a 6mo Male puppy OES purchased from Laurie Roberts, And I could not be happier with him. His name is "Oakley". Oakley has a great temperament and is truly the sweetest sheepdog we have ever owned.(Not that our other OES aren't sweet as well but Oakley just has that "go with the flow attitude.") He has been so easy to train, yet so calm and behaved. Everyone that meets him asks "he is a puppy... he is a very calm oes puppy." He is a gentle giant as some call him. Laurie is great and is always willing to answer any questions you may have and is a very helpful woman. She also cares a lot about the homes she places her puppies in. I send her updated emails about Oakley as well as pictures of him getting so big!!! She also sends me emails to see how he is doing. We also currently have two other OES who are 11 & 10 who we got from an awesome breeder in Alabama who does not breed anymore, but we still keep in touch with, which is very nice.
I highly recommend breeder Laurie Roberts. You will be happy with her. -CAB lisamarie wrote: hi, i'm brand new to the site.. i am just now getting an oes after two years of wanting one so bad!! i have gotten positive responses from referenes but i just want to make sure i'm going with the right breeder. has anyone ever been in contact with laurie roberts, a breeder in kansas? |
Hi CAB,
Welcome to the community. Glad to have you here. I see you're from Boston! Will you be at the New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue picnic this Saturday? There will probably be more than 100 Sheepdogs there. |
Did anyone ever find out any info on Laurie Roberts. I was just wondering if she was deemed reputable or not. |
This is a back-yard breeder. I would encourage you to look elsewhere for a puppy. Her price is right...but for a good reason. We have spent thousands to band-aid genetic disorders including eye surgery and hydrotherapy for severe hip dysplasia. Yes, I am being blunt, but as I see Oliver struggling to get up due to a sore hip I have no sympathy for ignorant breeding. |
My Ellie came from Laurie Roberts. I didn't originally purchase her from Laurie. I got Ellie from a lady that originally bought Ellie from Laurie with the intent to breed her. Then the lady had second thoughts and decided to stick with breeding Bull Dogs. Ellie was diagnosed with hip dysphasia at 7 months of age. I got Ellie when she was 4 months old. I called Laurie Roberts and after a few phone conversations and me sending her the X-rays of Ellie's hip, Laurie reimbursed me $850.00. Ellie also had demodectic mange. Ellie had the FHO surgery at 8 months old and her mange has been cured as well. She is a great dog but it is unfair and very sad that she had a rough start in life. She is a very bouncy goofy dog that is almost 5 years old and still acts like a puppy. We do a lot of swimming in the warm months so that has helped a lot with her right hip and I get her left hip checked yearly. So far it is doing very well and hopefully we won't need to do a total hip on that one should it start to bother her. Michelle |
Jen, did your dog come from Laurie? If so how long ago? I really appreciate your help. |
