I don't want to Kennel Miley for Vacation

I am really excited for our family summer vacation. We planned to take kids camping in SD to see the Badlands, etc. However, now I am having second thoughts because I don't want to kennel Miley Rose for the duration of our trip.

In the past we have asked both my parents and/or my husband's parents to pet sit the furkids. However, our Max (now at Rainbow Bridge) was a much older and less excitable dog and our parents were more able to handle him. My Dad loves dogs and is great with them - if you don't mind him teaching very bad dog manners (Dad loves to get scrapes from his plate at the dinner table). 8O Dad loves Miley, but he now walks with a walker due to a stroke - so I worry over an excitable puppy tripping him. I know if I ask - he will say yes :D I just know he would spoil her and I would end up with tying to undue the damage.

So that leaves a kenneling her. I get nervous with the thought of that. She loves people so much I can't imagine she would be very happy. My other option is bringing her along. I have not checked but I doubt dogs are allowed in most of the exhibits we want to attend.

Has anyone kenneled for a 2 week period. How did it go?

Thanks

Becky & Miley Rose

Can't you take Miley with you camping? I would only go camping if it was a dog related trip since I prefer to camp in hotel rooms. :)
I have been thinking about that but I am not sure if I can take her to Mt. Rushmore so I have to check the park regulations. Also we only have a popup camper and if I crate her in the camper I think it might get to hot as we don't have a/c in the camper.
Do you have a young, single friend who might be willing to stay at your house for the two weeks? Responsible college kid?

Or send her to London's Sheepie's Gone Wild Camp.
What a great family trip! But not for a dog. I was in that area last fall. I had a really hard time finding suitable places to exercise my dogs in the Rapid City / Badlands area. You can't take dogs to Mt. Rushmore. You have to leave her in the car while you tour the exihibit but it will be hot in the summer. Also, there are no fenced offleash parks in that area or anywhere nearby. All the dogparks are unfenced. In national parks, dogs must be on a leash at all times and they are only allowed where vehicles are allowed -- no trails, no lakes, no nuthin. They are allowed offleash in national forests and some state parks.

I would suggest visiting various kennels and looking for ones with pleasant accomodations and playcare for the pups. If you search, you might be able to find someplace really special where you won't mind leaving your dog. I just had Maggie boarded for 2 weeks and I think she had alot of fun. Plus it is great to get dogs used to kenneling at a young age because you won't always have family or friends available. If you take him there a couple of times for playcare and then maybe one overnight before your trip, it won't be scary for him when you leave on the trip.

Another option is to hire a petsitter who will stay in your home. But I actually think dogs benefit from the socialization of a good boarding/daycare place.

This place could be nice (can never really tell til you see it in person). The activities sound wonderful.

We've left Barney at his doggie daycare/kennel/groomers for 2 weeks before and a few other shorter times. This place is great--they have a set schedule of activities and rest periods. They get human interaction and doggie interaction. Barney LOVES going there (which is good because he'll be staying there for 18 days soon!).

I think just look around and try out various daycares and kennels and see if any of them are a good fit. I actually feel better with him at the kennel than if someone was at home because then I worry about if the person came over that day, did they come in time to let him out, did they play with him enough, etc. At the kennel I know he's getting plenty of exercise and fun.
I know it's a tough thing to do leaving your dog at a kennel, especially when they are so accustom to being with you, but I've changed my opinion about that. In the whole scheme of things, a week here & there is not that bad and your dog will be fine!
Research and find a kennel that you like and are comfortable leaving her at. When I was young we used to take 2, 3 and even 4 week driving trips as a family. We would leave our two OES in the kennel the entire time. They loved going.

There are many places now that have more human interaction than a traditional kennel. If you find one it may be slightly easier to leave Miley Rose there.
I have a retired vet tech who dogsits for me. She stays at my house while I am gone. She is kind and compassionate with the animals and I like the fact that she has medical knowledge in the event something would happen. Since I have four dogs, they keep each other company during the day so I like the fact that they can stay home and not have their routine interupted, nor thier surroundings changed.

I had owned a dog day care center 7 years ago, which I have since sold. Besides having the daycare center and a grooming section i also offered boarding. Our overnight guests were never kenneled except for at night time, after 10 pm, when we left. They were put into very large crates, crates big enough to hold a Great Dane. During the days they were always out and either playing or sleeping on one of the many couches I had in the daycare. I also gave each one of the over night guest a morning and afternoon walk in the surrounding neighborhood.

If you cannot find anyone to stay with them while you are away look for a facility which offers this kind of service. I can honestly say that the dogs who stayed where never stressed and the owners would comment how excited they were when they came back again. If you do go the daycare/ kennel route I would strongly suggest leaving your dog there for short periods of time so that they get acclimated to the enviroment and people, and they also know you will be coming back to pick them up.

Happy traveling.
Thanks for the things to consider.

I am checking out these places www.luckydog-msn.com and www.campk9petcare.com and tomorrow if I can get out of work. Our obedience training group rents the facilties at lucky dog in the off hours - so I know it will be familiar to Miley Rose. My thought is could send her to doggy day care during the days and board at kamp k9 at night. I appreciate the suggestion of sending ealy to have her get used to the people and learn that we do come back.

I am also going to check out the one Valerie suggested its a little further but looks really nice as well. We will see if it is right for us. There is also some young college kids in the neighborhood that might be willing to stay here.

Thanks for the info about the dog parks and national park dog regulations. I suspected regulations similar to these - they are fairly close to our state park regulations. I really appreciate your support. I know its silly but I am worrying about leaving her. I know I will miss her.
