Watch carefully for signs of affection. Not Infection, though that is important too. Signs of affection include nuzzling and and light whining. Treat with head rubs.
Thanks for all you do! |
Honestly I have never had a dog that has had an operation for a hernia so I am not sure if there are some special guidelines or things I need to watch for. (The spayed part I have down pat. ) |
Generally fixing the hernia while spaying doesn't involve too much more than the spay, but that is for younger puppies. The vet just extends the incision slightly further to encompass the hernia. If the dog is more full grown I guess the incision will be larger. Probably just watch for the same things.
Izzie has a umbilical hernia |
Darby had an umbilical hernia and we had it repaired when she was spayed at 6 months. Was this the type of hernia this sheepie-girl had? Darby healed up fine with the same basic restrictions of a spay. Her incision was longer than Emmas but she healed in about the same time frame.
Thanks for helping this sheepie |
Kelsey had a little umbilical hernia when she was spayed at 6 1/2 they popped that back in at the same time. No problems just the after care from the spaying till she healed up. |
My Bella was spayed at 6 1/2 montha and also had a hernia repair at the same time. Her incision was a bit longer. She did get infection in her incision and had to have antibiotics while it healed. I was a bit upset with my vet because she also got kennel cough while she was there and was there less than 24 hours! She did have the kennel cough vaccine, as well. However, she finally healed just fine. |
