______________________________________________ "JUST A DOG" by Richard A. Biby Broken Arrow, Oklahoma From time to time, people tell me, "Lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "That's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand." |

That is so true Chris. I hope sweet Drezzie is doing okay. |
That is so sweet, and Drezzie gets lots of kisses and wiggles from Yuki for her tummy to get better. |
I love it!
Big hugs to Drezzie. |
That is lovely - I've sent it to my boss who just doesn't understand about dogs !!! Time off for sick kids, kids being picked up from school fine - to me my dog is no different, wish people would understand that ... lets hope he now gets the message ... that or I'll get the sack - ah well.... its just a job lol |
I like this message, too, because it shows how much a part of family a dog is.

I hope that it works for you Kayla. I'm fortunate in that my employers understand that my pets are important and taking off for vet appointments or sick leave for them is not an issue. There is no such thing as "just a dog" or "just a cat" IMO. |
Chris,
Thanks for passing this on; I'll get a lot of mileage out of it sending it to my dogless friends. |
I really hope Drez gets better...
And I hope I don't make you sad in anyway.. just trying to comfort... From my experience.. having lost my first dog (6yrs old) due to unknwon breathing problem and the second puppy (8 weeks old) to choking/bleeding within 6 months. I tried sooooo hard to change my mentality: "It's a dog, it's a pet, it's something I bought to play with.. It will only live 10 years.." NO it didn't make me treat them any less human!!! I did it in attempt to get less attached to my next dogs.. I did it in attempt to save the agony when they died.. But rather than being sad about the deaths I feel greatful that I got to know them and that they had brought me so much joyful experiences.. They are not JUST dogs~ I honestly think my dogs are better than some humans in many ways! |
Very lovely. Thank you for sharing. Hope that Drez is doing better.
