i have been reading up on this forum for a little while now about OES.. we recently bought a puppy, she is 9 weeks old today and her name is belle. she weighed in at the vet at 12lbs 9 ounces on monday of this past week...im just wondering if she is at the weight she needs to be...how much do you feed your puppy total for one day..the back of the puppy food said 1/2 cup a day...which seems like hardly any food. when we pick her up she just feels like just bones. when we go to put food down she eats it like she has never got food before...any advice would be great. thanks again in advance! robert |

When my dogs were that size I'd put about 3/4 of a cup to a full cup of food down 3 times a day... soaked with water to soften it. |
If you can feel her ribs the way you explain that she feels like all bones, she needs more food...I found the guidelines on the food bags not at all accurate...I agree with Willowsprite. 3/4 cup, three times a day. Also agree to soak the food with some water so it softens. When I would feed breakfast, I would soak lunch. Feed lunch, soak dinner and soak next day's breakfast the night before...Its easier for a pup that age to digest when soaked and since no teeth really, easier to eat!
Also, my pup also ate quickly. I think that's because in a litter they are fed all together and whoever eats the fasted gets the most! My guy still eats fast...He's 4 months now. Be sure to keep feeding the three times a day. To avoid stomach upset and a possibility of bloat, its better to feed three smaller meals as suggested than one or two big ones... Don't worry. Once you increase the food, your baby will gain some weight. Good luck. |
At 9 weeks your pup has probably only recently come
home. What did the breeder tell you? You should start with the same food and amount that your breeder was feeding. It helps avoid tummy upset and keeps the potty routine similar. If you are able to get this info from your breeder it might be a good place to start. Good luck with your new puppy! Shellie |
I agree with feeding 3 times a day, starting with the food the breeder had her on. You should discuss with your vet what kind of food (least amount of filler, generally speaking) would best suite Belle, but please go with the highest quality you can afford. Switching food should be done very gradually. Also, be aware that some dogs do better with some foods (ie lamb vs chicken based) than others. What does your vet think about her weight? You want to feel some ribs, sure, but not like they're really skinny. My puppies came home to me feeling really skinny, but filled out nicely, rather quickly. Sometimes its simply a question of less competition for food at their new home vs with their entire litter.
I have never soaked my dogs food, personally. |
