London - Skin Issues ?s

London has an appt for the vet tomorrow. She is itching, and biting at herself non-stop. She has one spot on her back that is a little bit larger size than a quarter that is just raw and oozing. So I am going to get them to shave her down (I have already cut all her hair off from around the raw spot), but wanted to ask if there is anything I need to specifically ask the vet to test her skin for. Poor baby is just miserable and I feel so bad for her.

Sorry to hear she isn't feeling well... skin problems can be one of the worst things to try to deal with...

Is this sudden? Is it possible she might have a flea allergy?
This is a bad year for dogs for yeast infections of the skin and ears too so I'd definitely look into that.
Good luck.... I hope there is an easy and quick solution for you and London.
She has been itching off and on but it is getting much much worse. I thought it might be fleas but she has no fleas on her (I have checked her over and so has our groomer - no fleas). So I thought ok food allergies and switched over to Innova food. The itching and chewing on herself is almost nonstop the past couple of days. I am going to ask them to do a skin scrapping to test for whatever.
Hi Wyn,

Sorry can't offer much but my sympathies. Hopefully the vet will find a solution. Blue suffers from this occasionally and Benadryl is very helpful and vet recommended..(tab form) so sometimes if Blue starts to chew at his paws (his hot spot) I give him a tablet and it helps.

Good luck

Boys are sending kisses to London
Best wishes Wyn for London, I hope the scratchies settle soon and you can find a solution to the itch for London.

Skin scrapping is a good idea. :D
Poor London! :(

Good luck!
I have no good suggestions... I just wanted to send some well wishes to London too!
Could it be mites? Something to test for at least.

Poor London!! Give her a big hug from me and Drez! :ghug:
Give lil miss london a big kiss from us!! nothing is worse than having an uncontrolable itch!
Poor London! That sounds miserable. I hope the vet finds and obvious and treatable condition.
Sometimes one flea bite (with no obvious infestation) can cause a heck of a reaction. Lucy is so wildly allergic to fleas, I'll find one piece of flea dirt after going over her whole body and she has a huge inflammation from it. Seasonal allergies ahve a similar reaction for her. I'm sorry you're going through this-- I know how much it sucks.
Maxwell has been the same way. His hind legs are almost hairless from all the itching. I have clumps of hair around the house that he has chewed off . We also have a vet appt tomarrow to see if its something serious. Miller is itching some, but not nearly as bad, and had no raw spots. Max's spots get a little red and black. They don't look like hot spots. Hopefully it will be easily treatable and not mange or something. Let us know how london is!
That sucks Wyn.. hope she gets some relief soon..
Poor London. :( What did the vet think? :?
I dropped her off at the vet's this morning. (The groomer and the vet share a large building.) They have shaved her down and she had no flea dirt and no fleas found on her. So right now they are doing some skin testing and will call me back and let me know. The vet said she thinks it is seasonal allergies since the pollen is so bad right now. Apparently they have seen numerous dogs with allergies during the past couple of weeks. But until they finish the testing they won't know.

They did say she looks funny nekkid. (This was her first ever haircut. ) Now I am wondering what my poor baby looks like.

Ummm...I don't see how it is possible for London to look anything other than adorable :D
Poor London...I hope her skin problem is quickly solved :( ...in the meantime though....get us some nekkid London photos! :D
Just got London home from the vet. She tested negative for fleas and flea dirt, mites, ringworm, mange, etc... She does have some serious skin allergies and have a consult for me to take her to LSU Vet School to have her tested for whatever is causing the severe skin allergies. They told me to immediately switch back to IAMS as she was not having nearly this bad before we switched to Innova. They put her on Clavamox as she has a slight staph infection in those two hot spots on her back. Benadryl tablets twice a day until allergy season is over, and Anamox for the yeast in her ears. $250 dollars later I have a slightly sleepy pup from her ordeal today oh and a very naked but beautiful sheepie baby. I did take a picture of the hot spots on her spine that I found last night (just need admin approval). She really doesn't have any other hot spots but some areas that were starting to get irritated from her chewing on them.
If she has yeast in her ears I'm betting it's a yeast all over problem. I would really recommend trying pro biotic capsules. It can't hurt and I really think it will help a LOT. Omega supplements too...
Stacey, Is there somewhere local I can buy pro biotic capsules?
Any drug store or health food store....
Best of luck , hoping for good results for you and your sheepie
Do I look for Omega Supplements or is there a specific name?
You can ask for omegas 3 &6 supplements at wherever you find pro biotics...
Iams is very high in omegas to begin with so that should help as well.
Hubby just went to the drug store with my notes in his hand to find the pro biotics and Omega supplements for London.

I know I keep telling you all that she is very small but the official verdict is she is only 22 inches at her shoulders and shaved down weighs 55 lbs this is her size at 11 mths old.
Wynette,
Sorry to hear about your baby...could she be allergic to an ingredient IN the food...like wheat gluten or corn meal? Or soy? I've been looking in to different foods and in researching, I've found the majority of food allergies are to the wheat gluten and/or corn meal or corn...One of the symptoms can be seen in the skin..Other symtoms are seen in gastro upset, etc...I am going with Wellness since it is one of the only ones I've found to be free of those two ingredients...

Just a thought...hope you find the answer.

Yucky, I'm sorry!
Awww poor baby, hope you can get on top of this, the omega and probiotics should help her a bit.

Have a look at drys made from Fish and Potato. Or something she has not had before, venison blend, duck, something like that as there is a greater chance of no reaction to that. Anything that has Lamb, beef and chicken blends in the dry should be ruled out at the moment, because she has probably already had these in her diet previously. Just a thought there.

Keeping fingers crossed that it will settle down soon for London.

You are right! I just approved the pics and she is a pretty, shapely little miss! I hope she feels better soon.
Here is the pictures of her hot spot on the her back. The really red spot higher up on her back towards her shoulders is where they did the skin scraping.

And my sick little puppy:

Ah, she looks so sad  I hope you figure out the allergy...Is she taking any meds for the itching? She must be miserable...

Good luck...while you'r thinking about it...did you use any new shampoo? Rug cleaner on your rugs...cleaning solution on your floors? Sometimes we don't think of the obvious things. Hope she feels better soon...
Cheater! Sure, just show the sad sympathy pics. But look:

What a trooper: :hearts:

And look at that shapely rump!

Awww poor girl! I hope it clears up fast!
The picture of her grinning was because I had a treat in my hand to get her to look up. She is very sleepy from the benadryl. She is still scratching. I am thinking about putting one of her t-shirts on her to keep her from scratching herself raw until this medicine kicks in.
I'd say if she has an appetite for treats, that's very positive. I hope you can figure out what is causing her to itch. Itchy problems seem like the hardest to diagnose and so frustrating for the sheepies too.

Have you thought that maybe this is an allergic reaction to not having a playmate? 8O
Hi Wyn,

Poor London! :( As I've mentioned in previous post Benadryl has worked very well for Blue if the itching intensifies. I also give natural yogurt which conteracts any anti-biotics given to my other two and Shaggy previously. (Blue has only been on anti-biotics only once in his 18 years and that was for an absess tooth.) Shaggy was on it off and on for years, and both Merlin and Panda have been on anti-biotics a few times.

As you probably know floppy eared dogs are often plaqued with yeast infections in their ears.

Vicious cycle with anti-biotics..kills not only the bad bacteria but the good bacteria which keeps yeast under control in our bodies.

I learned about this when my youngest child was a newborn and was on anti-biotics for the first two years of his life due to a defect in his body. Years ago a book was published called the Yeast syndrome which explained how while anti-biotics helped many things it also was responsible for causing an overgrowth of yeast in the body shortly afterwards. It's a common occurance for woman to get yeast infections shortly after a bout of anti-biotics...so anyhow..Yogurt is a good natural cure.

Best wishes with London and once again the boys are sending sloppy kisses.

Marianne, that's exactly what the pro biotics are for... yogurt contains some, but not enough.
Poor girl looks sooo miserable in that pic. :(

Being itchy is lousy.
:ghug: She looks beautiful shaved. Poor little sweetie get well soon! We're pulling for you!
Bless her heart . :hearts: She looks great shaved, Wyn. She's the perfect weight for her size. Those hot spots look miserable. I really hope the meds kick in and the supplements work wonders for her. Keep us posted.

And give her a hug & belly rub from me. :P
I agree she still looks utterly adorable!! :hearts: Hope she's feeling better soon. Big hugs! :ghug:
Her back looks very similar to how Rebecca's back looked a few weeks ago but that was a result of what we went through with the walking dandruff mite especially with all of the bathing I did. I ended up just buying some doggie cortisone cream and it cleared it right up.
Poor baby. I hope she gets better soon. Sending sheepdog (and lab and shepherd)kisses her way :hearts:
Thanks for the info Willowsprite!

Wyn, I am sending positive thoughts London's way with hopes she feels better soon and gets relief from that nasty itchyness. Kisses from the boys too.
