Carpet tearing

My dog is ripping up the carpet near the door. Nothing else in the apartment is touched, and he is completely housetrained. I have never left w/o him going to the bathroom first, and never have been gone for more than 4 or 5 hours at a time.

I didn't know that he was ripping the carpet, because the little stinker is pulling it up cleanly...but I was sitting at the computer (near the door) and noticed that the baseboard carpet was a bit uneven, and by gosh, he has pulled that away from the wall too.

I can't deal with that, but don't want to kennel him. I understand that it may be only option though. I refuse not to leave the house because he's being a stinker. Any suggestions?

I think the kennel is a great idea. Eating carpet can be really dangerous. Being in a kennel with a blanet, a toy, a stuffed kong is safe and cozy.
There was a recent post from someone who's dog died from eating carpet. When my Katrina was a puppy, I left one day and she ate a hole in the carpet about a foot by a foot. Never ever happened again. And thank goodness she was fine. Back then it didn't dawn on me that it could be dangerous.

If you don't want to crate your dog is there a room you could leave him in that isn't carpeted?

It would be good if you could catch him in the act and reprimand him so he would know not to do it.
