argument

Ok, my husband and i are having an argument! LOL Here is the scoop, he claims that his other sheepdogs, and he had a few, always listened to him, were never formally trained, were the best behaved animals ever! He claims that all he did was talk to them like they were people and they understood and did whatever he told them. Hmmm I wasn't there so this is his story and he is sticking to it! This started because Mopsey doesn't seem to listen to him too much! She does to me. I am telling him that this is because I have been the one trainingher EVERY day for a month. Speding one on one time with her, teaching her, etc. He now says that she is just not very smart! Oooooh! He talks to her in these long sentences. Like to come, he would say: come here to me... She doesn't understand, because I started with teaching her one word commands. I think, like a kid, you start off by teaching words, mamma, daddy, etc. Then move on to longer commands, as their vocabulary grows and they really internalize the short commands. So, of course he is getting over this, but I was really hurt! For me and my baby Mopsey! So I told him to spend more time with her and train her. He's like, well these dogs are so smart they don't really need training. Stubborn! He is giving in, however I want to know what you all think of this "they know what you are saying" theory! Rrrrrr! Men!!! :?

I think he is right on talking to them like a person, but you have to get there first. I taught one word commands with a hand signal for each command. If they did right, I always said good, sit or good, come....ect.
Now, that the dogs are older they know those certain words and we can now say Jack, will you come here? And he hops up and he is there. Annabelle go to bed, and off she goes. They are a very smart breed. Jack understands a few more words than Annabelle, but not many. Make sure that you and your husband say the same commands. It will be a huge help. We even play hide and seek, where one of us will run out of the room and then they are told go find Mommy or Daddy, and they run off to find us.....or Ashlan or Joey. LOL They love that game. I think sheepies can be taught several words, just work on one or two at a time and make sure Mopsey has it down and then move on to something else. Also if she gets hyper and her walk and playtime doesn't help, do some training. My guys love to be stimulated mentaly. LOL
I think you win though, because you are teaching one word commands first. LOL Stormi and co.
Thank you Stormi! My thoughts exactly! The problem is that he uses too many words and she just looks at him like " What are you saying? I don't know what that means." He is coming around. Took a good argument to get through! Hmmm
I've always tended to talk to my dogs like people too, but for training I only use one word commands. My husband often say 'Dancer can you sit?' and wonders why she doesn't always listen to him or doesn't respond as quickly. If I say Dancer sit and make the hand signal for it she is sitting instantly. But then again, my husband has no experience what-so-ever with animals....
Too bad husbands weren't so easily trained...
Stacey, you got it! I also talk to Mophead. I explain things to her, and I swear she understands! But as far as commands go, that is a different story! Anyway, he is starting to do it my way. :D Oh, yeah, training husbands takes many, many, did I say many, simple sentences with much visual effects! :D But they are worth all the trouble at the end, just like out furbabies. And, they don't have accidents in the house.... Mostly.

LOL, says you.....my husband has more accidents than the dogs, not of the same nature mind you. 8O Then the 4 year old has us all beat in the accident department, but he has a smile that would make you forget in a second. LOL Stormi and co.
ok, on a different topic, i am freaking because without thinking I washed the kitchen tile floors with bleach! Then realized, crap, I have animals in the house! 8O So, I washed the floors with water twice, and I hope that they will not get sick from walking on them and licking their paws!!!!!! Oh my god! Did I really screw up? Should I wash the floors again???? Help!!!
I use diluted bleach on my floors as well, just keep the animals off the floor until completly dry and they will be fine. I guess some dogs could have more sensitive skin and when they lay on it, it could irritate the skin or pads. All my cats and dogs are fine, but my son has severe eczema and we keep socks on his little feet. LOL All should be fine, though. Stormi and co.
Ooooh, thanks for answering!!! I am so glad someone else was up!!! The question is what the hell am I doing washing floors at 11:30 pm??? Ok, I washed the floors with water one more time, and then hand dried it! But I kept the doors to the kitchen closed until I was sure that it was ok. *sigh of relief* Thanks Stormi! You saved me from a heartattack! :)
LOL, I am an hour behind you. It is 10:30 here. I stay up late, so that I get some quiet, on my own, without children yelling time. LOL You wash floors late and I groom dogs late. I am glad I could help. Stormi and co.
Don't have a heart attack. I do the same as Stormi. diluted bleach and then i keep them out of the kitchen till it dries. By the time i get around to mopping the only thing that will clean and disinfect is bleach. lol I have better things to do like spending the last 2 hours teaching my son how to sew. Thank goodness the sewing machine and computer are on the same table. :D
cher
I use bleach to wash floors too, not everytime, but i wash mine everyday, i only use bleach about once a week. And here I am, on this computer again at almost 12:30 am...lol...
Thanks all! I just remembered reading how harmful bleach is to animals, and didn't remember anything else. Since I am on vacation, my whole sleeping schdule is off. I wake up at 5am (Ummm, Mopsey is resonsibl for that) and go to sleep as late as 1:30am. I don't know how I function during the day. The problem is, I get second wind at around 11pm. And start cleaning or something, and then the wind leaves pretty darn fast, but I still have to finish whatever crazy task I started. So no sleeping until 12 or 1 or so. Husband woke up and saw a puddle, thought that Mop has peed in HIS room (computer room, i try not to ground him too often, LOL). I was so proud of her, because she woke me up to go out at 5am and then 6am for #2. Checked the house and didn't see any accidents. Well, it turned out his airconditioner was leaking and made a puddle on the floor. HA! Mopsey didn't pee after all.
LOL
That's great that housetraining is going so well for you, what's your secret? LOL
Speaking of inability to function, I don't know how I'm going to make it through today, I am soooo tired after staying up with Cleo all night!
Yeah, I hear you. I am exhausted! Whenever I get this tired, I have an allergy attack! I am sitting on the couch with tissues stuck up my nose, cause otherwise its like a waterfall. *BIG sigh* Don't worry, she will have the kittens soon. Do you have a baby monitor at home? I would put her in an enclosed location (room), with a baby monitor turned on. Don't they start yelling before giving birth? You should hear it, even if you are taking a nap. Very exciting!
Most cats don't meow before giving birth. Instinct says hide, be quiet, clean up so there's no smell.
But some cats do howl a bit while they're looking for a place to hide. This cat isn't even hiding though, she wants me to stay with her all the time.
