Is this a normal look for a sheepie or should I be concerned that Barney is deformed? |

It could be the grooming. If they left that elbow a little longer, it could certainly make him look bow-legged. I have had the same thoughts about Oscar, but the hair on his elbows is longer and curlier than that on his legs, which makes them stand out.
Also, Oscar is slightly pigeon-toed, which sometimes makes it harder to discern what is going on. For Barney, it's probably just the grooming. Laurie |
im sure its just the grooming...i gave panda a really bad haircut last week and now she looks bowlegged too....
just think of what panda and barneys children would have looked like...... |
There is Elbow Dysplasia like hip Dysplasia (HD). It can happen in the elbow region but extremely rare in OES.
He could just be weight bearing more on one leg then the other to give that bowed look to his leg. Or just the way he was trimmed. Post a Picture of his front legs. |

Our first sheepie, Quincy, had elbow dysplasia which we noticed when he was only 1 1/2 years of age. It presented as a slight, intermittent limp. I think my vet thought I was nuts, as she couldn't see the limp, but hey, I walked that dog three times a day and noticed a "hitch in his giddyup". Sure enough, it showed up in his x-rays.
That's why it sounds like a little extra fur on the elbows to me. |
Okay, here's a not very good picture of the leg. It's from my cell phone and he wouldn't sit still...so...
You can kind of see the leg on the left of the picture seems to go straighter than the main leg in the picture, which seems to bow outward at the elbow... Am I crazy? Can you tell anything from this bad shot? I couldn't find an existing picture with him with shorter hair and a front view of his leg. |
so, does this look strange? |
Not sure, could be just the way the coat is trimmed, hard to tell by the photo and him sitting. You need to have him standing, front legs together then run your hand down one of the legs and feel then the other and see if there is any difference there with the straightness of the leg.
Start at the top of the straight looking leg, then do the other and see if there is a difference. If not then just a wonky clip on one leg. Did you end up getting Barneys Hips x-rayed? if not yet then when you do you can have the elbow done at the same time if you are worried about it. |
Thanks Lisa. No, we haven't gotten his hips re-xrayed (we had them done at 7 months) because he seems to be doing okay at the moment...but when the time comes, I might do the elbow, too... |
