Hi Neville, it sounds like he is in the coat transition period. Hard with the matting then. But keep persisting with the grooming and it will get easier.

Some strip the undercoat out at this phase of things to let the new coat through quicker with less clumping. Also just lightly tipping the ends to help get rid of the puppy coat helps too.

Use a spray bottle with water and a little bit of conditoner in it and mist the spray over him as you are line grooming. That will help the dryness and the tangles.

Best brushes, well there are a lot of good brands, I like Hindes ones, there durable and get through the coat without being too harsh and ripping out coat.

Do a google as there is a lot of links on preferred brands of pin brushes, all good ones recommended for OES coats.
I have a puppy that is going to 11 mths old on the 7th. She is going through the same coat change you are talking about - going from puppy coat to junior coat - and does mat up very easily on a daily basis we fight the mats. I use a mat cutter to get through the mats and get them out and then line brush/groom her using a pin brush. I also use a little bit of condiitoner mixed with water to spray on her. It helps to prevent static electricity and helps get the mats out easier.

Just remember when you buy a pin brush to make sure the bristles do not have the little balls or heads on the ends.
Let me first say that my Miley is my first OES and I am learning as I go. However, a breeder in my area that works with OES rescue recommended #1 All System pin brush. I ordered from Pet Edge. At the time Pet Edge was only carrying a plastic vs wooden handle brush. I ordered as I knew the brush I was using was not right. I thought I might be disappointed with the plastic handle vs the wood handle. I really like it as the plastic handle makes the brush lighter, which I like. I am not sure if it will last longer but as Miley tends to grab them out of grooming bucket it does not have chew marks either. I think as she get older I might invest in a better one but for now I like it.

That said I think the brush you use is personal preferrence and there are many to choose from.
