Yes, my Maggie swims but I only let her swim in places where I am prepared to either go in and get her because she could stuck in mud, tangled in something under the water, or even carried away by a strong current. I actually had to rescue her once from a rapidly moving creek and that was a real lesson to me. So unless you are prepared to dive in after him, it is probably safer to keep your pup on the leash. |
Clyde can, although it's one of the saddest displays I've ever seen. Lots of splashing. He seems to enjoy it, though. He's a follower in the water though, which can make for nasty scratches. |
Every dog is different.... my first oes would sink like a rock. She refused to swim and would just sit there even in shallow water.
A friend's oes used to love to swim and would dive into their pond waiting for ducks. Welcome to the forum! I'm guessing you're in Scotland Your accent shines through |
Most can swim well. I would test him outin a safer spot 1st - though. Hate to have yours be the one that can't swim! And if not used to it he could panic. Also - coat length will affect his swimming abilty. Longer coats can drag them down. |
Most oes can swim, some like it, and other don`t!! I have two that likes it, but my male, don`t. Take a look at one that loves swimming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnaK3ONB3R8 Lene |

Good luck with your puppy - I would take it nice and slow and hopefully Ollie will grow to adore swimming! |
Hi,
Loved the vid Lene!!! Shaggy, dainty girl she was, would never step in water deeper than an inch and disliked getting her paws wet. Merlin, never showed an interest other than the occasional muddy puddle. Blue, although a Lab X never even stepped into my fishpond for 15 years until Panda's arrival, but would chase a ball if thrown into a lake. Panda lives for the water!!! On our first vacation together to an isolated Island - I'll never forget the look on his face when we visted the seashore the following morning. He looked at me...the ocean..at me..and a look of utter joy on his face and dove in! Spashing and chasing waves, swimming quite far out so I became alarmed but would return every time. We did this daily for two weeks and returned the following spring. Doesn't matter if it's a puddle, little green turtle pool, my fishpond, or a lake or ocean - Panda will dive in and swim or splash if it's a tiny kiddie pool. I found out later my rescue boy grew up near the South China Sea so probably explains his love of the ocean. I think introduction of water to them at early age may have something to whether they like it or not. Or as sheepies ...if they see their uprights in water they may just follow them in but otherwise wouldn't be interested. To add input into your question I've never heard of a dog drowning other than falling onto thin ice and unable to climb out so wouldn't worry about your boys love of the water. Panda often swam for up to 2 hours with the occasional rest inbetween and then dove right back in. He slept so soundly afterwards with all that excercise! Here's an old post that shows pics of Blue and Panda swimming in the ocean..you can see Panda's head bopping in the background. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=2159 Still, being a sheepie they become a huge matted mess but I didn't have the heart to stop him from doing what he obviously loved..so just had him shaved afterwards. My only concern regarding Ollie is not the swimming but teach him recall so that he knows to come back before giving him the chance to go near a lake offleash. Good Luck! Marianne and the boys |
Tasker swims, but he looks a bit like a bale of cotton floating in the water. |
Here is a picture of Harry swimming at the end of season pool parties:

Judi that is a HOOT. But I still say a swimming sheepie looks like a floating bale of cotton!! |

Nice work keeping his head dry! |
Harry looks great swimming! |
I have taught both of my OES to swim. Being that I have a pool in my backyard I wanted to make sure they knew how....ever if they didn't like it.
They don't swim unless the have to. They can usually be found sitting on the steps enjoying the cool water. When we drained and then refilled the pool the dogs had a blast splashing around playing |
I wouldnt call it swimming, but she does like to get wet |
Darcy, she looks like she's about to be swept away into the ocean! |
