chewing remote

Sophie has been with us for just over a month. She is a year old. She is so loveable and doing great. Her one annoying trait is chewing things when we are not looking. She is so sneeky she will get paper out of the trash, the tv control, cell phone, etc. Sometimes she will bring them to us or maybe bring to where we are. Is there something we can do or will she outgrow it sometime soon?

What about that bitter apple, of the "Fooey" spray?
Obe liked the remote as well but that was about it. I just make sure it is out of reach now. I also told him NO when he chewed the remote and gave him one of his ten thousand toys. He got the picture, okay to chew my toys and not dads. Maybe it was all the bones and toys he has to play with because he never really chewed anything and is now 7 months. I can trust him to be good chewing/potty, so until he proves me wrong he can have free roam. I have worked hard everday in the last 5 months to get him to this point. He will be starting obedience school next month.

Do you know anything about her background? Some dogs outgrow this and some don't, so you will need to be viligient.

Dogs often chew things to release stress....Like for some people a good work-out or a good book will do this. I would give her one or two things that she is allowed to chew, and LIKES to chew on, and let her have them available at all times. For some dogs this is a stuffie, or a nyla bone...Jsut make sure it is not a remote control. She should only have a small number of items to choose from. If there are too many she will get confused about what is allowed and what isn't. How would she know?

Make sure your place is completely puppy-proofed. Get down on your hands and knees and check things out from that level...

And if she does bring you something that she shouldn't have she needs to be rewarded! Lots of praise and a nice treat for that! Much better that she brings you your wallet, then you find it in pieces behind the couch. :?
We are praising her when she brings us something insead of chewing. I will try the sour apple. Another question. When we came home from church, Sophie was all wet from drooling while in her crate. She has two toys in there and we have been doing this for 4 weeks. Would mabe some clothing from one of us help?
It could be that. There is a towel and an old sweatshirt of mine in Obe's kennel. His front legs will be wet from drool but that is because he lays his kong or another toy on his leg while chewing on it.

Bingley has a blankie of ours in his crate. A serious word of caution which I'm sure you probably already know: Be sooooo careful that you watch how she interacts with this towel or special blankie you give her before you leave her alone with it.

My neighbor's year and 1/2 old bulldog was put to sleep on Thursday. Earlier this winter she had chewed up a towel while she was in her crate. Unbeknownst to her owner not all the towel passed as thought. Her dog slowly began to waste away - the owner had blood tests done to see if it could be cancer - anything. Finally they discovered parts of the towel still in her tummy. They went in for surgery but it was too complicated to end positively. :( Very sad. I don't know all the details but I have been obsessively going through my house checking for items Bing might have discovered without me.
:D I agree with Mop Lover. I had placed a chenille rug under Willoughby's bed which he likes to have by the door when I go to work. I discovered a few weeks later that he had quietly eaten the fringe off the rug and had started on the rest. 8O I think everything has passed through his system. I took the rug away and the cats have it. My previous OES, Bentley, slept on that rug on the bed in my spare room and never touched it.
Thanks for the tip I will keep an eye on that. So far he has not touched it.
Two of mine were chewers and they both out grew that behavior.
I will not offer advice on this one.....I pull into the drive through at the cable company, put $10 in the drawer and without saying a word they put a remote in and send it back
But he hasn't eaten one in mos.....so hopefully :D
I can't offer advice. So far the score in my house is London (age 11 mths): 1 cell phone, 1 remote, 1 purse, about 20 plastic cups, 5 books, 12 rolls of toliet paper, 3 combs, 2 hairbrushes, 5 pairs of slippers, 8 pairs of shoes, untold # of stuffies (she is a major stuffie terminator), sticks, branches, etc...

I live in hope that this too shall pass. :plead:
