Getting a Puppy

So, Emily and I have come to the conclusion that the next choice of dog is mine. So I was wondering what breed you would get. I have limited the choices to our "A" list. I want to get a dog that's good with the family, minimal grooming, and good at agility. If you do put "other" please specify which breed and why!

Thanks!

I voted for a golden retriever...i grew up with them too..They are just the best family dogs..(covering Pandas ears)....although the goldens chewed up a lot more stuff than my sheepdog ever did....
I voted "other"...because I think you should get another OES! :D

There's just nothing quite like two sheepies playing together!
I think for the traits you're looking for, you'd find a great match with a mixed breed-- maybe even a mix of the two you both like. At the last dog show I went to, I was watching the flyball dogs and it was so neat to see a sport that mixed breeds were evenly matched with purebreds.
Whoops...I answered the poll without reading the whole message 1st! ...missed the part about "minimal grooming!"
Sorry!
All of the dogs you have listed would be great, but I would get an Airedale Terrior. They are considered a "non-shedding" breed, are so adorable, and have amazing personalities. There are two sizes: a true which is about 50 pounds, and a giant, which can be about 80 pounds.

My sister's airedale is so smart (he had a total of 5 accidents in the house while potty training), loyal, and very friendly. They can get hyper, so a yard to run around is needed. And boy do they have a personality. Never a dull moment with Hercules!
8) Definatly an Australian Shepherd. My dog China (click on my camera and you can see a pic) is so smart and a quick learner. She would be great at agility! She has such a sweet personality. She and Violet, my OES, get along just great. If you have any more questions regarding the Australian Shepherd, i would love to answer them.

Regarding China's grooming, there isn't much. The hair from her nose back to her hips is straight. The hair on her hips back is curly. She then has what I call a skirt from her nubby tail down. She really is a beautiful dog. There are all different colors of Aussies. China is considered a Merle with a white face and yes her eyes are very blue.

Good luck picking the perfect dog for you!
I like Borders, great fun, smart dogs and would get on well with an OES with a lot less grooming.

Golden retrievers are wonderful too, but do require a bit more in the grooming department, especially the feathering on there legs & tail :D

Borders are a little less work in maintenance.
A chocolate lab. They have great personalities, loving
and like agility. They love their family and get
along well with other dogs.

There is a breeder around the corner from me
and one of the neighbors got one last year.
The dog is well behaved and just beautiful.

Good luck selecting your new pup!
I love golden retrievers, I grew up with them too.
I voted for the kid! I think you two would make awesome parents and Bingley would make a great babysitter!
I actually really liked all your choices!
I ended up voting for a human kid. I figured you always can get a dog, but having a child is more time limited. You guys would be fun parents!!!

they come out bald to begin with and are easy to sponge bathe.. altho for a few short years the grooming bit will be abit of a chore unless you get one of those that likes to fly wild and let it all hang out..

Yes, they will bark loudly.................
then proceed to kiss the stranger like crazy.

Most strangers to our house leave after the loud deep
bark, they never get to the sheepie kisses. I find the
sales info on the front door.

We've never had a problem with door-door sales people
and we've owned 2 sheepies.

It must be the Security System by Wigglebottom LTD London/worldwide
sign.
oh oh oh get a rescue mutt!
You should get a Shepherd. They are so vocal, they talk, say hello, and well sometimes mouth back like a teenager. I love my GSD. She's so sweet and lovable and hugable, needs little to no grooming. You shouldnt bath them more than once or twice a year. The most important things are keeping their toenails clipped and ears clean. (no fur pulling with them)
I never thought anything could replace my OBSESSION with animals. Ever. No matter what mothers would tell me. No matter how many women who didn't want a baby, who ended up having one, told me it's the best! I mean, how many of these women even enjoyed dogs as much as I did anyway? They don't go to any dog forums, let alone are able to identify a havanese from a mastiff.

Well, yep... they're right :hearts:

I voted for getting it on in the bedroom.
Don't let the idea of Labs fool you...hyper hyper puppies...it takes alot of work to get them to the great family dogs. We've had a couple.

Border Collies...the smartest dogs for a reason, they love to be doing something...if you are lazy people, that work all day and don't have time for mental and physical work...go for something else.

Golden's would be my choice in the list.

However I voted other:

My favorite (covering Remy's ears) is the Boxer, hyper but very loving, expressions, and goofy, and protective...altho they might lick the intruder to death too. No grooming, but it is an inside dog, that sheds like a Lab.

The other dog I would chose would be a cross, from a shelter, or a breeder that takes the same care to tests both parents, knows the lineage, and do everything a pure breeder should do. Goldendoodle for example...can be the best of both breeds if done correctly.
I voted other for a Flat Coat Retriever. I do love goldens but we had a super smart flat coat who was more independent than his golden cousins(my sisters goldens). As an added bonus when shedding, the flat coat's black hair will blend with the OES (yes I know the OES rarely shed - I am very happy about that) but the golden hair shows up on everything.
I vote for a kid- but I have 5 and think that all people should have a few! :D
