Its been an extremely cold winter, very drying. But until recently I hardly had any wrinkles. Now...Bammo! I'm getting 'em fast. Could my weight loss have anything to do with this? I've looked at all of the aging skin products on the market and am terribly confused. Seriums (I actually use one), toners, moisterizers, all sorts of things. Oh...and did I mention, I still have a bit of acne? (Just not fair I tell you!) Can any of you tell me what I need, what will help and what is just plain garbage. Thanks from your wrinkly friend! |

moisturize moisturize moisturize....lol
any type will work as long as you keep it up...day and night...EVERYWHERE.... i use prescriptives for day and niviea at night....dont forget your neck too.... |
and a chemical peel or microdermabrasion is good to remove some fine lines and smooth out your face. |
Would I do that at a salon or Dr's office? |
You can do it at a Dr or a salon or at home. I recently bought the Neutrogena home Microderm kit and I really like it, and I've actually never had a professional one, so I can't say the different firsthand, but I think it's a great way to exfoliate and remove a lot of dry skin cells and refreshes the face. You just have to make sure to moisturize really well after.
I think it depends on what service you want done whether or not you go to a spa or a doctor. They say to check if the person at the spa is a registered aesthetician. I've had a peel done at a spa, which I thought was fine. My mom has laser treatments done at her doctor's office. So basically you have all sorts of options. |
Water, water, water....
You need to keep hydrated from the inside out too. Lately I've been so busy and haven't exactly been paying attention to myself, not drinking as much, not eating properly etc and I can see it in my face. I look older... Once I drink more water for a few days I start feeling like myself again |
Yes weight loss will make you look older too....remember all that fat was also in your face puffing out the wrinkles so moisturize and drink lots of water (which I am sure you are doing since you are on WW and they tell you to drink lots of water) |
Smoking also has a huge impact on wrinkles, skin quality etc.. amoungst other health hazards..
But Deb, in your case I would suggest it is the weight loss. It will take, I think, a year or 2 for the skin to tighten up again where the fat was. |
I drink tons of water! I always have (had a propensity to bladder infections when I was a young woman, so I just got into the habit.) I've only lost 15 pounds, but people say they notice it in my face. Hmm. Even though I'm eating really well, and exercising, my skin is lackluster. Just dull. And (eek) looking really tired. I've got wrinkles under my eyes (not bags) that weren't there before. Does anyone prefer one moisterizer over another? Is there really a difference between day and night mmoisterizer? I've been using L'Oreal age defining (I think that's what it called). So far, you've given me great suggestions...keep 'em comin'! |
Well, I know that anything that is a 'cream' rather than a 'lotion' is a better choice, as lotions actually dry your skin out and creams really moisturize. I'm at a different stage in my skin years than you, so I'm not up to date on the best products for you. My mom has always sworn by Retin-A (not a moisturizer, but an antiwrinkle product).
Two more suggestions (and I know Chicago in winter this one will be tough): your skin needs some sun in order to be healthy, so maybe if it isn't too cold you could try being outside in the sunlight for a few minutes. That really helps alot. And make sure you're getting enough sleep. That makes a difference too. |
Consumer reports did a whole study on skin products. Their results????
The BEST skin cream out there, ARE YOU READY............................ Is........................ Believe it or not.................................. OIL OF OLAY I was AMAZED because that is what I have been using since High School. They did a comparative study with products from the lowest low end to the products that cost HUNDREDS of dollars a jar and claim that Oil of Olay is the best. Not to sound too commercial but I am often comlimented on my skin. Last week I was at the Dentist office, in the chair with my mouth full of "stuff" (did I already tell this story??) The Dentis (woman in her 30's) was talking to the hygenist (another woman in her 30's): DENTIST: She (me) has really nice skin HYGENIST: She (me) really does, no wrinkles DENTIST: She (me) looks really good FOR A WOMAN HER AGE If I hadn't had so much "stuff" in my mouth I would have BIT her!!! |
Ginny, they were just jealous |

Nothing beats a good microderm from an aesthetician. It's only like $50 to $75 a session and makes an incredible difference in your skin's condition. I have the at home kit, too. It's ok but after going to a professional, it feels like almost nothing. Glycolic peels are really good for minimizing fine lines, too. DDF makes an excellent face wash with a small amount of glycolic acid in it that I love. |
Ha ha!!! Sometimes people are such idiots!!! One of the women that works for me (who is in her 20) ask me what my age was this last birthday. I told her, and she said, OH! I did know you were THAT old!!!! Bonk! Ok...now to serious business...is that the plain old Oil of Olay, or one of the fancy ones they've come out with , Regenerist, I think. There are just too many products!!!! Have you ever stood in the store and read all the labels????? |
Every morning I use the oil of olay with the spf 30. I use various creams at night. What I like for really dry winters is the jar of cetaphil cream. When my face feels dry I use that. Cetaphil also makes a very gentle non-drying face cleaner that I love. |

Lotions don't dry your skin out, they're just really more for people that can't take such a heavy moisturizing base, like people who are more prone to breakouts or have oily skin. They're also better for younger skin. They absorb faster and don't sit on the your skin as long as a cream does. Creams are excellent as overnight moisturizers but can be really greasy for under foundation or other makeup. Older skin can handle creams better because the pores are more slack and absorb the moisture quickly. My mom works for Estee Lauder and has to go skin "schools" every month so she's always spouting off what she learns. The nice thing is, that their education isn't just on their products, it's overall skin care too. She's 60 and looks fantastic so she's doing something right. I listen because I look just like her and it will be easier to predict what I'll look like if I follow her lead. |
And Amanda, you have really pretty skin! |

I am actually a fanatic about mosturizing, I wear very little make up (well none really) but moisturize three times a day in the winter and twice in the summer. |

Thanks People never think I am as old as I am, but then again I am only in my late twenties. I think the key is to find a "treatment plan" that you like and stick with it for awhile. You will see what works and what doesn't. If you keep jumping around and trying different things, then you won't know what is or isn't working/helping. I am the queen of trying new products, but I always have to push myself to stick with something to see if it works...and stick with what I know works rather than shelling out more money for the next miracle |
I have heard people say that a thin layer of vasoline on your face at night works great. It isn't supposed to make you break out either. I know there is a celebrity that uses this method, but I can't think of who she is... |
Oh gosh! I remember seeing her on the Rachael Ray show talking about (well, not the show, but the commercial.) Was it Cybil Shepard? |
Not sure about the Vaseline thing...but I only use Aveeno cleansing and moisturizing products on my face and body. I've used Aveeno body lotion for years, as I struggle with skin sensitivities, allergies and rosacea, but I developed a contact allergy two years ago that sent me searching for new facial cleansing products. ( I had used Mary Kay for years.) Turns out Aveeno didn't have any of the preservatives that were causing my problems, so I've used them ever since.

Kate Walsh, from Grey's Anatomy (Addison Shepard) uses it. Sorry, I just knew I had read that somewhere! |
Aquaphor is a great product to use on your face for moister. I use it every morning and night and I have really nice skin. My son's dr said he uses it all the time because he has to put his hands in and out of water all the time. You can pick it up in a drug store over near Vaseline or near the baby products. My sister and I both use it and are really happy with it. |
For mature skin, try one of the French skin care lines.
I am using Avene for dry dehydrated skin, its available at the Healthy Skin Center in your CVS. They also have Vichy available. Both these lines have a mineral water spray you can use before the toner, then apply the moisturing cream. In department stores, the Clarins line is excellent as well. They are about the same cost wise as domestic store brands, but are beautiful to work with and you see results very soon. Many aestheticians prefer them If you really want a treat-->find a spa that has Yon-ka It will get you addicted to spa facials. |

AAAHHHH spa facials Microdermabrasion at the spa or Dr. is worth every cent. My treatment was face/throat/décolleté. What a diffrence after 5 sessions! I wish I could manage a monthly facial, but don't go more than 2 months without one. As for daily use, I like "Philosophy" "hope in a jar". Several times a week I mix in "hope and a prayer", a vitimin c powder. I really like their microdelivery peel and use it once a week. Overall the products are resonably priced. |

Do you have a medical skin clinic? There are so many non invasive procedures now days. Photo facials are awesome for sun damage and will brighten up your skin, with no down time. Microdermabrasion is good. Usually a skin clinic can recommend a serum that would be optimal for your skin type. The products you get at a skin clinic are usually non greasy and immediately hydrate your skin.
If you're losing volume in your skin, for instance if you are getting sunken in circles they can inject restalyn to pump up the area and lessen the wrinkes. I think they showed this on Oprah on her hairdresser. Roc is supposed to be good. As well as the Loreal moisturizers. Kerry lotion is good as told to me by a woman that looks 20 years younger than her age. She uses it religiously on her face. Nutragena acne soap is good for those oily spots on adult skin. Also alot of celebrity's tout that proactiv product. Oil of olay regenerist is good. If you have allergies or sensitive skin lubriderm is good. And Cetaphil is a non drying cleanser and cheap too. Aveeno is highly recommended. Aquafor is also excellent for elbows and feet in addition to faces. Good luck, remember keep trying stuff until you find the ones where you notice a difference because each person is different as to what will be best. |
This weekend I bought Oil of Olay Total Effects moisturizer. I thought I was buying the Regenerist, all of the different products were mixed together. I've been using it, and I don't know if its helping, but I have to say, it feels great! Its very rich and creamy. I treated myself to a massage on Saturday (a reward for losing weight and starting an exercise program!), and talked to the masseuse (who is also my manicurist) about my skin. She does skincare as well. She seems to feel all I really need is a good facial and exforilation. She told me for being 57 my skin actually looks really good. She thinks the weight loss has something to do with the problems I'm seeing, and assured me, my skin will catch up. |
