ettiquette for selling my car?

Well,

I'm selling my Cavalier. A power steering pump support thingy broke on it, and I just don't have the time and effort to fix it AGAIN (after replacing the engine last fall... what a fiasco!).

I bought a 2005 fully loaded Nissan Altima, which I LOVE and which had a very unfortunate run in with a wooden display at the gas station this morning (display 1 Karen's bumper 0, bad, bad day!)

So I'm selling off the Cav. (Squeaky toy money for Pip, reef tank money for mommy, window money for the house, everybody wins!) I listed it online, but I don't know much about selling cars, and wondered if anyone could give me some pointers to help out?

Start by telling us the make model and year of the car. :D

Then we'll send you to edmunds.com to find a starting point for your price.

Then we'll advise you whether to have the car repaired, or to sell it the way it is.

Don't forget some of that money has to go to your bumper fund. ;)
I've already decided not to do anymore repairs on it. I know I could get more $$ if I repaired it, but I'm done, period. It's a '99 Chevy Cavalier.

I'm hoping to call in the magic "Daddy FIX" for my bumper. We'll see...
Thanks for the advcie Ron. I checked Edmonds, and with the current condition, mileage, and equipment, my asking price is spot on!

Now any advice on how to deal succesfully with buyers?
Also get ready to tell all the marketing companies that will call you to "help you sell your car," no thank you. I was surprised at how many calls I got. Where are you selling it from? Don't they basically have a form that you fill in all the info and then add in some extras at the end?
Well...first off--never meet them by yourself! But you're a girl, so you probably already know that.

Sounds as firm and as knowledgable as you can. I've found that anything to do with cars and me against men, the men always seem to know what they are talking about and assume I don't. So try and be conscious of that.
Also, be sure your add and sales receipt states "AS IS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm selling it off of an internet classifieds engine (not sure if I can list the name on here or not, it is a free service). So there is no form or anything, just the add I listed. I should look up and see if I can find some sort of bill of sale documentation somewhere to make it all legal eagle for the state of MN, and I've gotta figure out how to transfer the title.

I've got a guy coming to look at it tonight. 8O Mike will be there, and if someone comes when he's not, I'll have Christina's car junkie boyfriend come over to help me!

thanks for the warning on the marketing company, haven't gotten that yet, but did get one kinda slimy guy... I don't think i'll be getting back to him.
Here is my advice. It's free and worth it.

Be sure to tell them that it needs repair! :D

You'll need to transfer the title, so you'll need to find that.

You'll need two (that's 2) copies of a bill of sale. Leave the name of the buyer and the amount of the sale and the date as blanks, until you can fill in all of the details at the time of the sale.

Put the odometer reading, the VIN and the words "This vehicle is being sold AS IS and without warranty of any kind" somewhere in there. I would also say that "The vehicle is in need of repair, including but possibly not limited to the steering pump thingy" (get the proper term in there.)

Get the buyer to sign both copies (and you do the same) and be absolutely SURE to sign over the title (after you have CASH in your hand). Do NOT leave the title unsigned. If he or she insists, walk away from the sale, they are looking to resell the car without registering it in their own name. Their buyer will come after you if there's a problem if you leave it blank.

Good luck!
Where can I find a good bill of sale?
We've bought ans sold many a car...I jsut write up the bill of sale by hand,,,or type it up on the computer...Just need the yr, make, modle and serial number, and conditions, and signed by both parties.

BUT, if there is a deposit and the rest later, make sure you stipulate in the contract the date it is to be finalized....and the deposit is non-refundable.

We learned the hard way....people say they want it, then time goes, excuses for not coming or bringing the rest...meantime other buyers are turned down...Make it short and sweet.
Any news?
Maybe it's too late to mention this but always try to leave a little room for negotiation in your price. People seem more willing to buy if they are getting a bargain.
Well,

We successfully sold the car last night, for the full asking price! :clappurple:

It was alot less painfull then I thought it would be. The guy was a local used car dealer, I've actually driven past that lot a couple times, but never really thought about it at all.

The bill of sale helped a lot, I found one on the MN DMV website.

Yay!!!

I was a little sad to see it go though, I've had that car for a long time
Great job :high5: ...at least you didn't have to spend a lot of time on selling the car :phew:
Congrats!! :clappurple:
WOO HOO! YAY! Congrats!

I looked on your MN DVS site for you for a sample Bill of Sale but I couldn't find it. Where was it????
Congrats on the quick sale! :D
Thanks guys, I'm quite pleased!!!

Ron- It was in a sneaky place, I had click through a lot of stuff to find it. Not sure I could even duplicate it again...
Congraats, that was a quick sale! You must be good.
