Congrats, that's exciting. I remember having so much fun shopping!!! Be sure to post pictures.
I have never had to use tear stain remover for my dog. I even have a maltese who HAS tear stains... I always tell people... do NOT to forget to have a huge pack of paper towels when you get your puppy. I'm talking... invest in 2 packs of 12 or something. You'll need them! |
Good advice, thanks, I'll add that to my list. Any other advice from those with great experience? |
How exciting!!!!
Yup, paper towels are a GOTTA HAVE. |
do you have nature's miracle or some other carpet stain/urine remover on your list or already in your cabinet? To me, this is a must have on day 1 too.
maybe shampoo? I like the mild, tear free puppy shampoos we had to get a puppy gate right away too, but it's not necessary for some people. we kept our dog in the crate, but wanted to give her a place to roam even while we were home but couldn't watch her, so we put her in the kitchen (or whatever room that didn't have carpet). |
How exciting! It sounds like you have been happy shoppers.
Definitely lots of paper towels, and some kind of cleanup spray. In addition to those mentioned, you could try a Windex-type spray (just get the non-ammonia kind) and Odoban. I also periodically (about weekly) wipe out the crates with Chlorox Cleanup. I am a bleach freak! I love it bacause it is cheap and kills lots of organisms. Just make sure it dries completely and the fumes go away before putting your pup in it. |
I was wondering about cleaning out the crate. I'll have to add the Chlorox to my list. I also got a BIG bottle of bitter apple. Heard that was pretty good stuff.
I have hardwoods throughout, so thankfully I don't have to worry about carpet cleaner. Oh, no I have area rugs though, so guess I'll have to add that to my list too. I want to order some of the Cardinal Gold Medal Blue Diamond Shampoo (Ron's advice in another post). But I'll most likely need a baby shampoo for the face, huh? Do I need to be worried about too many baths in the beginning? I mean, if he has a few accidents during the day in his crate (and gets it all over him) can I wash him after each accident (the hubby and I are going to be home every 2-3 hours to let him out), or should I just wait for the end of the day-as gross as that sounds. |
If it is a poop, I would at least rinse it off him with water - before it dries on him. A little urine can wait til you have time to wash and dry him. If the urine is really saturated in him to the skin you need to wash it off. It can cause burns on the skin if left on.
Our 1st OES was named Oliver. Good name!! |
I am so happy for you that you are eagerly awaiting the arrival of your sheepie and having such fun shopping! You helped me to remember how excited I was when I was waiting for my Katrina to arrive. |
You said puppet, I took a doggie puppet along when we got abby and rubbed it all over her mom and brothers then put a wind up alarm clock up in the puppet and she snuggled with that every nite in her crate. Worked really well, and some towels too with mommies sent on it. Very comforting for the pup. |
We recently found the receipt from when we bought Pirate's "layette". Tony and read it, and really smiled remembering how exciting it was to get ready for our new baby. I always kept the popup cleaning wipes for quick clean up for little "squirts" on the kitchen floor. I remember, I went though a lot of them!!! Congrats! |
Our breeder did send home a blanket that was in his bed with Chewie and siblings. He loved that blanket for months, even after washing it. He used to drag it around the house with him. You could bring one of your own just in case and get it all scented up before you leave. |
Get yourself a Bissell Little Green Clean Machine. It's an investment well worth making with a new puppy. |

Your puppy probably won't NEED the baths, but it's a good idea to give your puppy relatively frequent baths for the first few months.... maybe once a week. Not because your puppy will need it, but because it's good to get him used to taking a bath... so it isn't a struggle when he's older and much bigger. We did that, but stopped around age 5 months. Now we'll be giving 2 per year - spring and fall. It will be an all day affair. Can't wait. If your puppy will be getting a bathroom break from the crate every 2-3 hours, you will very quickly have no accidents at all to clean up in the crate. As long as you keep the crate partitioned to an appropriate size for him, he won't go in the crate if he's able to hold it. Even at 8 weeks, most pups can hold it for 2-3 hours... unless they've just eaten or drank. Sounds like you will be very well prepared! Can't wait to see pictures!!!! |

Unless he pees on himself constantly and enjoys sitting in his own pee, as Clyde did. He loved his own urine. |
Oh my!
We only had a pee-required bath once. Barkley peed in his crate in his sleep.... didn't even wake up, he was such a good sleeper. |
Clyde would pee on himself in the crate and sleep in it, he'd pee on the floor and lay in it, we'd take him outside, he'd pee and we'd bring him back in and would pee on the floor again and lay in it again. There were some days when I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I actually had to throw away the first Little Green Clean Machine because it took in so much pee, it permanently reeked of ammonia.
For such a peeing puppy, he's like a camel now. I would've never believed it if someone told me then he'd be like this now after his "wet" puppyhood. |
Wow! I am in awe of you right now!
And that's why puppies are cute..... |
Clyde the pee machine . That had to test your sanity...... |
That's great-"a pee machine". Hee-hee. Hopefully Oliver won't want to sleep in his urine.
We fought over a name for weeks, but then Oliver was suggested, and it was love at first hearing. WE ARE SO EXCITED! We get to go this weekend, and play with them, and pick one out. (I will finally be able to post pics!) We would have liked to wait a bit longer, but the breeder has a list, so we need to pick our pup, so others can pick theirs. I will have to bring either the puppet or a blanket. When will the pups be very playful? They were born on Jan. 29, so, they will be about 5 weeks this weekend. Deb-the pop-up cleaning wipes like baby wipes? That's a good idea. You guys are such a big help. I feel like I am half-way prepared to bring the little guy home. I hate going into a situation unprepared! I am just so excited to bring our little guy home that I feel like I am going to pop! |
By 5 weeks they will be very playful and be showing their personalities. We had Barkley picked for his personality by 5 weeks.... then came the waiting and hoping the breeder didn't want to keep him for showing. Phew!
Ask the breeder to tell you stories about the puppies antics so far as well. That will also help you get a better idea of their individual personalities and which will fit better with your home and lifestyle. Ask the breeder which pup he/she thinks will suit you best too - they know their pups the best! Have fun, remember that personality is way more important than markings and make sure to bring your camera!!!! |
