Dog Boots...combatting springtime mud

I am thinking of purchasing boots for Izzie. After her outside time last night  I think it is time.

I want to know what boots everyone uses or has tried in the past. What did you like or dislike about them? How far up did they reach? Were there boots you tried, but didn't like? Any tips as far as brands, sizes or materials?

Hopefully other people are interested in this topic too...it seems to be popping up lately. :D

I have two pairs for mine - one pair I don't even know the brand the others are muttlaks. I don't think either pair is high enough . can anyone recommend boots that go further up the leg? I am comfortable with them bringing in a little snow but mud season is fast approaching here in New York and I'd love to have boots to combat that.
Uuuughhhh!!! You just had to go and mention mud season coming up... 8O :(
I just bought a set of Muttlucks....because of the rating of boots then were on another thread...I think El Gato or Las Vegas Sheepie Lover did it.

Anyway, they were pricey, but they stay on and are the highest ones in the 3 stores I went to. The X-large has the extra cuff to fold up, but the All-weather one didn't...Same make, but different type, so check for the extra cuff.

We haven't had mud, yet, but I have put them on the pooches inside the house, to get them used to them.

They are a bit hard to get on, because they have to be nice and snug. And Bosley still has his front dew claws, so we have to be careful in that area....But so far the dogs don't seem to mind....or maybe they are preoccupied by the treats they get while wearing them...

I don't ever plan on putting the dogs out together in the mud, as they roll around in it and chase etc. So I just got one set and am planning on rotating them as the dogs each go in and out.
Hi Amanda.

I vote for Muttluks. I've tries numerous types, but most didn't fit his huge paws. Oscar wears the Muttluks throughout the year, as his paws are very sensitive, and concrete and road salt wreak havoc on his feet. Whenever we travel I use them at rest stops to keep him out of all the crud that people seem to leave everywhere, plus the mud. Oscar's front feet are much larger than the back, so I buy two different sizes, large and X-large. They work really well.

Hope it helps!
Laurie
Laurie...

Does Oscar have the all weather ones or the lined ones? How much do they cover?

Thanks!!
If you order them from Barbara Lamb she'll make them as tall as you want. http://www.shaggylamb.com/
I need doggie leg warmers

Or I could buy her one of those full body jumpsuits 8) she would hate me sooooo much
I've looked at the ones from Barbare lamb but was concerned about them not standing up to rough play with two sheepies outside - anyon have any experience with that? I sort of think of them as more for keeping clean before a show etc.
Rough play they should be fine. I wouldn't recommend them for a lot of street walking as they wear pretty easily in that regard but if they are just running around in the back yard with them they should be fine.

I think I'm going to have to break down and get some-- at least for the boys. The thought of putting all those boots on them is what puts me off. I think Bear won't care but I have a feeling Clyde will stand there, glued to the floor, like the boots hinder is ability to move.
I ordered a pair of Neopaws from Cabelas.com. They came and were too msall so I had to return for larger size. Can't tell you how I like them yet since I am waiting for the new ones...
Barney has boots and it is hilarious to watch him walk. He prances in them. Lifts each leg up really high and just prances around...And once, he was walking and just dragging one of his feet behind him...no reason, I guess the boot just felt funny to him. We stopped him, put his foot solidly on the ground and he just started prancing again...

I am interested to see how you like them. Izzie's jacket is from Neopaws.
I think if you can get them on enough, they get used to it or keep them moving (so they don't try takin them off). I get a kick out of watching my dogs in them. Both are so funny. Will buy mutluks though if I pull out the tape measure today!

Inches from Back of Pad to Tip of Toenail

Corresponding Muttluk Size

Large
4-1/4”

X Large
4-3/4”

XX Large
5-1/2”
I LOVE my neoprene (Tasker's) boots from Cabela's. They have a great velcro wrap system and stay on better then his mutlucks. They do take a little longer to put on but it is well worth the effort.
Okay, Yuki is 4 1/4" - 61-63lb dog

I hope I don't buy a dang large and they're small.
My pups measured 3- 3 /4 for Abby...4- 1/2 for Bert...

A question I have though is, does the sizing take into account all the bulk of the fur? :lmt:
probably not,

I will say that Yuki's pair from petco is too small, but Mr. J was still able to get it on her paws for a romp in the snow last year. They're AT LEAST a Large, and I know they're different companies/quality, but I'd hate to have to return them because that's a hazzle.

Every time I re-measure though.. I'm really pushing for 4 1/4 inches. She's probably a tad less than that.

edit: Okay, I think I'm getting a L.

Does he have the orange or the camo ones?

The 8" look appealing, but I wish they had other colors :(

Do you have the 8"? except for the color they look great! I am going to do a web search to see if they have other colors somewhere in cyber space.
I use Muttluks on Beau & Gen. They do not impede their play in the least. In fact, they act like they don't even know they have them on.

Their's are the fleece lined ones with the cuff. Beaureguard has huge feet. I started out with an XXL for him, but they were too big. So, he gets an XL.

Same for Gen. I started her with an XL, but she needed the L.

I'd try the ones from Cabellas if I could get cool colors. :D They look like they'd work really well.

Camo

'Cause he's a manly man?
I got the Cabelas ones for Chewie. Unfortunately, I grabbed the L instead of XL. (they were on the wrong rack). So I have to go exchange them - soon!!

They look real nice and I know they will work. He's using his short fleece booties for now.

We got the orange. I didn't really like either choice, but figured if they came off, I could find the orange one easier!
The muttluks come up to the first bend in his leg above the paw...knee???ankle????? Anyway, they are short, but secure. I get the yellow, all-weather ones. Since the backs of his front legs can get pretty dirty, sometimes I take my husband's long tube socks and put them on Oscar under his muttluks. Looks funny, :D but then I just throw the socks in the wash. And no, I will not take a picture! :D
pa-lease?
The boots in this shot are ones made by Barbara Lamb. They have velcro enclosure on top & bottoms. I don't know if you can see in the pic but the back legs are longer than the ones in front.

The neopaws from Cabelas, did you find they ran small? I ordered the med for my 13 week puppy - he's a big boy at 40 pounds - and they ere way too small so I returned for the XXlarge figuring he'll grow into them in now time the way he's growing...

I got both...the orange and the camo!

Anyone have their rain gear for dogs or vests?

Smart thinking :high5:
Just got Muttluks on ebay. I hope they fit!
Well, the Cabelas boots are going back. They look really nice, but they don't fit. I got the XL, and the foot part fits his big feet. The problem is the leg part. It is not made for an OES's wide legs and all that hair. The velcro closures aren't even close to meeting!

I did find a shorter pair that work. They are made by Kondos Outdoors. They specialize in sled dog equipment and are in Ely, MN and are on the edge of the Boundary Waters. The web site is www.kondosoutdoors.com I have the elephant hide ones, tall height single layer. I actually got them at our local Petco. I don't know if all the stores carry them.
How do everyone's muttluks fit? I can't decide whether the large or XL are better for Yuki. I bought both.

the 101 times I've measured her feet, she's a L. However, when I put them on, they're tight.

The XL obviously leave room to grow, but I fix that by strapping it on tight.

???????????????
90 lbs full-coat XL'r

I would like to see one picture of the "dog" that you have.

I got a size Large and figured I would use them between both dogs. Well, they are nice and tight on Bosley, he walks very slow and gingerly with them, but they stay on and are nice and high. He is 70 pounds, and we just trimmed his coat.

I put them on Dixie, and I watched her go flying out the door, raced across the yard and the booties went flying off every which way.
I went out and picked them out of the wet mud...took 2 days to dry.

I don't think any would stay on her, anyways..So I will keep them for Bosley and jsut continue to wipe her feet off.

What size did you end up getting and do you still like them? I'm looking for a pair of booties for Walter, but I would like all synthetic material (Muttluks has a leather bottom :( )
I have the ones through Barb Lamb, they came in alot of cool colors, I got Elliott the yellow ones to match his raincoat. I love them, they stay on him good even while ripping around in the snow. :D
Mud has a season?????....... :D

I got the XL and they work well. The only thing I wish is that they were taller. Otherwise, they are great. They are reasonably priced too. I just got a 2nd pair a few weeks ago.
They come in a "elephant hide" which is like naugahyde, a fleece and one that is fleece with the other layer over it. So there are choices.

Oh yes  For those of us who DONT live in the warm, dry southwest  Its spring...when the snow melts! 8O
Dawn- what material did you get? I was thinking the "elephant hide" And did the XL fit well? Walter is about 90 lbs and has some big paws so I am thinking the xxl for him. what do you think?

(you all would not believe the amount of time I've been looking at dog boots this week.... my classmates must think I'm crazy)
My 1st pair are the elephant hide - and I like them. I have had them for about a year, and only 1 small hole from a toenail. They are waterproof, so it is good for wet and salt too.

The 2nd ones (still in the pack) are the double layer - fleece on the inside, E. hide on the outer. I am going to return them though. The main reason I got the 2nd pair was to protect his pads from the gravel and ice when he is out carting and mushing. But then I learned that the mushers prefer the plain fleece. The dogs get better traction and it allows the pad to expand when they impact the ground better. They make a plain fleece, so I will just exchange.

The sizes on the package say XL is 3 3/8 " and XXL is 3 3/4 inches. I would get the XXL for Walter. Chewie has the XL and they fit fine. They are actually the most roomy of all the ones I have tried.
Did you find them locally? The double layer ones were $11.99 here. That's for 4 boots - not bad!
Thanks Dawn! I think I am going to go with the xxl elephant hide. I haven't really looked at pet stores, I've never had luck finding things even close to Walter's size. I found them online for $15 so I'm going to go that route!
