Yard chemicals

Well, I hate to do it, but I am just going to HAVE to spray the entire back yard for insect control. Haven't done it in a couple of years and for whatever reason this summer is unusually harsh for bugs here.

My worry is what the effect on our OES might be. Anyone had a negative experience with their dog and yard chemicals? We can certainly keep Shayleigh out of the yard for a day or two after spraying but how long must that continue?

Any ideas?

Last thing I want is a sick pooch.

We have done our yard with diazanon. We used the granules instead of spray. If you are using granules water the grass first, then put on granules, wait for a good hot day and water in thoroughly. Once it dries the Shayleigh can go play outside.
With spray, leave on for 1-2 days. Then water in thoroughly. My husband worked in lawn care for the first year of our marriage.
Diazinon is getting hard to find, so you might need to try a different type. I would call the 1-800 number of the product you use to make sure she is protected. Our 2 have never had a problem, I even have one cat that goes out on harness. He loves it so even he has went out 2 days after using and he was also fine.
Good luck with everything. Stormi and co.
I use Ortho Bug Be Gone on my yard (granules). Just put it down, spray with water to dampen, and when the yard is dry, it's safe for your pet.
Hi Brenda,

Let me know how it works. Diazinon (I think I am using a really wrong spelling,LOL) is running out here, and since we can't get anymore, we need to figure out something else that works. I got bit by a spider a couple of months ago and it was so painful for around a month. We have spiders everywhere this year and not to mention the other creepy crawlies. Yuck!
Jack isn't happy with us, he LOVES eating bugs. He will pounce just like a cat and use his paws to knock it out of the air and chomp away. It is disgusting, but at least the cats taught him something useful. LOL

Thanks, Stormi
Last year, I only had to put it down about once amonth. Works pretty well, but you need to do it on a dry day, so it won't get washed off. This year, I'm needing to do it more often, about every 2 weeks. We had a lot of rain and flooding this spring, so the bugs are NASTY! Plus...I don't think my neighbors treat their yard. I have to keep the yard bug-free for the dogs AND the daycare kids. Sepecially now that they've found West Nile virus in Iowa...
