Thanks! |

We needed a health certificate which we got from the vet verifying the dog is healthy and has had her shots. All up to date.
and I believe you need your passport now. This is all my husband needed when driving the animals into and out of canada last year. house hunting is fun! (we decided to answer even though yuki's not a canadian sheepie ) |
Thanks...But is it the same if we will be going back and forth alot? I'm wondering if I ahve to register him there or get a license or something? I have time on this. We aren't going up until the weather clears but sometimes these things take weeks to get done... |
No license needed but absolutely must have rabies innoculations - (they sometimes check the dogs tags) and I would also have the dogs paperwork with you. When I brought Merlin back into Canada from US via car, they also asked for vet certificate dated within 3 days of travel saying he was in good health. It was the same thing when Panda arrived via plane from Hong Kong. Panda was a rescue from a puppymill who at 3 years old was saved due to this forum and people from all over the world.
Puppies under 3 months are excempt from rabies. (This was the case with Merlin.) Both those situations involved a pet which I was adopting. With my others whom lived with me and frequently travelled back and forth across the boarder with me..no vet certificate was asked for but they did check the tags and I carried the paperwork just in case. They do check if the dog has had his rabies innoculation. I checked the Canada Customs rulings and if you are accompanying your dog over the boarder, Canada and US have no restrictions but for the rabies innoculation. If the dog is unaccompanied then he/she must have the vet certificate of good health and all other innoculations. License is only for the city which you are residing at and is at a municipal level. Hope that helps. Marianne and the boys |
OMG Ashley! I'm so excited! Many members here who live in Nova Scotia and can advise you on what is what in the different areas...although I think the whole province is great!
I am going to be visting there the July 1st/2007 long weekend...and getting together with Brenda and crew...Dudster...Will you be there then? Oh, yes, and to echo Marianne's comments....only proof of rabies vaccination is required....in the prior year, I think.... How exciting! |
As some one who lives on the border, I'll toss my two cents in, too. Definitely the rabies certificate but if you get a particularly annoying border control officer, it might be helpful to have everything. Also, definitely have your passport. Whenever we cross, we bring everything we need-- and then some. It's better to have it than to, God forbid, be detained. We try to make our Canadian friends visit us here when we can so we don't have to deal with it!
What border will you be crossing at? |
For the record, when my husband crossed, they didn't ask for anything other than an ID for him and his dad. The health certificate was just what we're told to have. I'm sure they were supposed to check ...but they didn't. |
I know a passport for myself and my husband. Got it! And Bowie would be with us always, not alone. I understand the rabies vaccination proof but when you say, bring all the paperwork, what do you mean? Like his AKC registration...and what else?
We are very excited to. We actually have a house in mind but have to wait until we sell our house in North Carolina first so we can go an "exchange" as they call it for tax purposes. We can't make any offer on the house we like until after that. But, I know this time of year is slow in sales so we are hoping this house stays available...If not, I know we'll find something else. I don't think there is a spot on Nova Scotia I don't like!!! Thanks for all your help. Just still wondering what all the othe papers are I should bring with me. |
Well congratulations Ashely on your move to God's country!!!!!!
What part of Nova Scotia are you thinking about? As Nicole mentioned there are a few of us Bluenoser (that's what Nova Scotians are called) on the forum. What an adventure you are going to have.. |

Proof that he belongs to you would be a very good thing to have...In case he goes missing, or in case there is a similiar dog stolen and they need to verify that he is indeed your. Copies of vet recepts, and AKC papers would do that. How exciting!!! |
Hi,
What I meant by paperwork was more in regards to the certificates you receive when you have the rabies innoculation as it's possible they don't just accept the rabies tag around the dogs collar. (Some could have just used another dogs tags). The rabies certificate will also have your name and vets number. Your name on these documents can be verified by your passport. I did check the Canada Customs website to verify this and rabies is the only thing needed, but like most of the others stated : I would still bring his papers (vet records) just in case. They also may check your dog is a personal pet and not for resale. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/ani ... etse.shtml Marianne and the boys |
Thanks everyone for all the info. We are not actually going to relocate or move permanently. We are looking to stay residents here in NY and have the house in Nova Scotia as a sort of vacation/retirment home. Half year here, half year there...The area we are looking at is Millet Lake in Lunenburg County, near Chester? I think that was the name of the town. I don't ahve my paperwork in front of me...
This is great. By the time I get there, I'll feel like I already have friends...and my dog too! Maybe we can make the sheepie the national dog |
I think that is near Laika and her family! |
Dawn, I think it is. She actually sent me a few listings
This whole thing could take months to complete but I am a "planner". I like to hve things in place before time. Our families and friends all think we're a bit nutty buying out of the country but to me Canada doesn't seem so foreign. We're neighbors and I beleive most of Nova Scotia speaks English, right? The parts I visited did anyway...I've heard it is getting pretty common for us Americans to buy in Canada..its so beautiful and clean and friendly Oh, I wish I was going there tomorrow!!!! |
Hi.
Go to mls.ca and keep clicking until you find the right area. This is a good way to see everything that's for sale in the province. Happy hunting and welcome to Canuck country |
