A few days ago when our back was turned for a matter of minutes, Libby jumped onto the counter and ate half a tray of brownies my daughter had made for school, she then managed to somehow break into the bin and polish off some leftover ribs! Chocolate and pork - not a good combination for a dog i know. So anyway, now she has diarreha and wont eat her food so obviously has an upset tummy. Any ideas on how i can help her to settle it or will i just have to let nature take it's course? |

Unless these brownies were super dark chocolate fudge brownies, I don't think the amount of chocolate will be something to worry about. I'm a little concerned about the rib bones. Were you able to account for all of them?
As for the diarrhea, there are many ways to try to settle the digestive tract. I prefer this method: http://www.oes.org/page2/3621~Rice_Wate ... rrhea.html If you are worried, please call your vet. |
I would be alittle concerned about the ribs and the chocolate. I think chocolate can be toxic...Just to be safe, give the vet a call. Sometimes they tell you pepto for the dirreara...but call vet and see if maybe he can get a check up to make sure nothing more serious.
Just another example of why it is so important to keep your puppy crated or confined to a puppy proof room when unsupervised. Even under supervision, like a baby, they need to be under a constant watchful eye. Good luck. |
At 6 months I would guess your dog is close to 50lb or better.
A half tray (half a batch??) of brownies is not likely to have enough chocolate to very serious. It takes a pretty large amount for a dog that size, and dark is always worse than milk chocolate. I too would be much more concerned about the bones from the meat. Just last week one of my dogs snuck some ribs as well - shame on me - and was horrible sick. All the bones have been accounted for now though - if that wasn't great fun Be sure all the bones made it out! I'd say if it was a few days ago, maybe limit food for 12-24 hours and see if that doesn't help. I gave my guy a day of rice and water and then a couple days easing back into his regular food. I also gave him several bowls of ice cubes - to keep him hydrated. Food wouldn't stay down, but he loves ice. If you feel he is getting worse or not improving at all, certainly go to the vet. They can give anti-skitter meds at the very least. Shellie |
Usually when dogs devour cooked bones you should feed them bread to help move them down the digestive tract without puncturing anything. I'm not sure if this late in the day it would be worth doing, but you may want to give your vet a ring to see what they suggest. |
