My poor 14 yr old girl with long hair hugged him and managed to get the smell in her hair. We cannot get rid of it We washed it with tomato juice, distilled vinegar, lemon juice. Nothing is working. She is quite distressed, for it is a continual reminder of the passing of our beloved dog. Any suggestions? Distressed mom and daughter, Lera |

They make shampoos that remove skunk odors from dogs that are enzymatic in nature. Perhaps one of those would work. They remove the odor, not cover it up. I hope you find a solution! |
Wow, I'm so sorry. We're talking about a human girl, right? Call a salon and let them know what happened and see what they suggest. Sometimes they have tips and tricks that we laymen don't know about. They may definitely suggest trimming it because if the ends of the hair are porous, they'll hold onto the smell even more. Some home remedies, though effective, may damage her hair so be careful. |
Try using raw lemons. Cut in half, squeeze them into the hair and rub the hair shaft with the lemon. Concentrate on the ends; like Butterstotch said, the ends are more porous and will grab and hold the smell more.
If that fails, try soaking the hair in febreeze and drying it with a dryer, then wash. Good luck and sorry about your loss. |
WOW! Thanks for the tips.
You're right...I had forgotten that the ends of hair are more porous. And my daughter's ends do smell the worst! Perhaps I may cut off the ends. If there are any more ideas...I'd welcome them. And I will call a salon. Grateful. |
Is it possible that source of the odor has even a tiny bit
of oil to it? I would try the above suggestions first, and short of cutting the hair, you may want to try goo-gone as that will break up anything with any oil in it and then just shampoo the area. Other than that try nail polish remover. It may be better than having to cut the hair, just be sure to wash and rinse well after. Maybe put some VO5 on there after too, to keep the drying from the polish remover to a minimum. Unless you want to trim - and then nevermind. Shellie |
I just wanted to thank you for all your responses. I used everything: vinegar, tomato juice, lemons...It seems that after 10 days, the odor
has finally been diminished to almost nonexistent. What a relief. We're always remember our dear pooch, but did not want to remember him in that way. Again, thank you so much for your help! Lera |
Oh yeah...We were able to save my daughter's ends (which had
JUST been clipped 3 weeks ago!) Blessings, Lera |
