I see a couple of sheepies listed on Petfinder that are in the Chicagoland rescue shelter. My question is - how do I know that these are purebred? Is there a way to guarantee this? I don't know a whole lot about petfinder so that is why I am asking. Any other advice on trying to rescue one from a shelter or humane society in my area? Thanks!! Jay |

Sometimes with rescue dogs they don't have a full history of the dog, so don't know for sure if it's pure OES, just guessing on breed. Other times, such as an owner-turn-in the owner might turn in paperwork on the dog too. It really depends on the individual dog.
A forum member in the area might know the name of an OES rescue group in your area. Does it really matter if the dog is purebred OES? |
Welcome to the forum
No dog in rescue or a shelter, or even from a "breeder" for that matter, can be called purebred if it's not registered... and of course there are no guarantees with a rescue. You will find dogs in rescues and shelters who appear purebred and would make a fantastic addition to a family but you never really know. |
Both of my rescued sheepdogs were posted on Petfinder and came with AKC registration papers. But those papers aren't a guarantee of quality, health or even genetics of the dog. They are just papers. Both of my dogs are fabulous -- sweet, loving, and beautiful. If there dogs listed that appeal to you, go ahead and ask for more information about the background of the dog. . . I would be more interested in health and socialization than in purebred genetics. |
I am in the Milwaukee area.
I'm not sure if there is a WI Rescue - I think others on the this board might know better than I would. I have been speaking with the Minnesota OES Rescue though. My suggestion - don't limit your search to just this immediate area. There are many OES pups/older dogs out there in other areas that would love to find a home. Usually, if there is a will there is a way, you can find a way to get some of these other waiting-to-be-rescued pups. I have found the people on this site to be amazingly helpful and I'm sure that, unless it's too outrageous of a request, people would work with you and help you get a rescue dog to you. Don't be afraid to ask everyone - as I've said - they're all helpful and knowledgable. Betsy |
p.s.
You might also want to check out the other topic on this board - "Dogs in Trouble". There are great OES's that need homes in this topic. Don't be afraid to email anyone to get info on a pet advertised. You won't know if this dog might be for you if you don't ask. Betsy, again. |

I've read all the comments so far and I think you guys are right - I should care more about the temperment and socialization of the dog instead of "pure-bredness". I mean, I would like a pure-bred but it means more to me and my family that the dog fits as a member of our family. So that is where I will go from here. Thanks for the input. |
There is one person listed as a Wisconsin contact for OES Rescue at this address- http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml
WISCONSIN- Terri Rodenkirch roadz@charter.net 608-837-6185 Good luck with your search! |
I have had 3 OESDs and they all came from the Chicago rescue and Grace. I have been very happy with all of them and Grace has been very helpful too. I would recommend giving her a call. |
If you get a dog from a rescue group, they can match you with a dog that would best fit your family's lifestyle and dynamics. The dog will also already be fixed and up to date on it's shots.
Good luck finding the right dog for you. |
Just wanted to give a quick update...
I sent an email to Grace of the Chicagoland OES rescue but I haven't heard anything from her yet. My email was fairly lengthy as I described my family and our current living conditions as well as previous dog ownership...that kind of stuff. The more I read about rescuing however, the more I am concerned that we won't be able to rescue an OES. I have a 14 month old son and even though we live on over 3 acres, we don't have a fenced in yard. We do take many walks so I am hoping that offsets the fenced yard negative. We are pretty set on getting an older OES as I don't want to go through the puppy phase. What do you all think? Am I wasting my time? |
For the most part, families and dogs are evaluted on a case by case basis.
I'd say as a general rule, having a small child and no fence would be a disadvantage to you in adopting. Having said that, however, there are folks like you, with plenty of dog experience, that a rescue will still consider. That's why they do home visits. So, they can see exactly what the situation and circumstances are. You'll have ample opportunity to convince them that you are a good home. So, I'd say, No, don't give up. Good luck. |
FYI...sometimes Grace can take awhile to respond...so be patient. |
Does a person HAVE to go through the rescue in their geographic area? Can they go to another group? |
Southpaw,
I may have mentioned this in my PM, but please call instead of email. I do know that they don't have access to email very frequently. Yes, you can rescue outside of your state. Annie was a rehome from Michigan. |

I foster in Louisiana and Marcus went to KY, and Rosie went to MI. Our three permanent sheepies that we have are from MO, AL, & FL. So yes you can definitely apply to rescue groups outside your area. |
My recent foster went to MI from AL. And all in one day too! Took 4 different vehicles, but we got him there. |
