Bone agression

I hope someone can help me with this problem. Bellatrix is starting to bite and growl at us, my son and I, but only when she has a bone.
She is down right mean. We haven't had any problems when she is eating food. I sit with her and pet her and even move the bowl around and she is just fine. We only have a problem when she is chewing her bone. Anyone been through this? What should I do? Take it a way from her right away? leave her alone?
This is something I've never been through before. Even Neville 'shares' his bones with me. Just the other day he dropped one in my bath water. lol

any advice welcome
cher

Yeah, you've got to the alpha here! How about with toys? By establishing yourself as the pack leader it puts you in charge of their life and well being. Someday something might happen......choke on the bone......imagine if the dog was fighting you. No more bones until you can establish order.
Cher, I have to tell you that our Jake was a big dominant male, usually around 106 pounds (shoulda been 96, but.... you know...)

Anyway, we came to all sorts of agreements and terms with each other, and one of them was that he never got any rawhide bones, because he became insanely posessive of them. We got him at three, so we never had the chance to see if this was managable from a younger age.

Even though he was dominant, I could reach down, and take his food and/or his dish, hug him while eating or drinking, anything... except with the rawhide bones. Sounds just like your situation.

My brother-in-law gave us a really huge one, and occasionally we'd let him gnaw on it for a bit, but we made sure we never bothered him or walked near him while he was chewing... and to get it away from him, one of us would go ring the doorbell, and when he dashed off barking his fool head off at the door, we'd sneak it away. (He'd give up looking for it in a few minutes)

Good luck -- hope whatever you do works out for you!
She's showing signs of possessive aggression. You should read the book, The Dog's Mind by Dr. Bruce Fogle. There's alot of information on this type of aggression and some suggestions of overcoming it. In the mean time, No more bones for Bella!
Thanks everybody. It is no more bones for Bella till after I read the book. It should be here in a couple of days. thanks for the suggestion.
SheepieBoss, she isn't agreesive with toys and is very playful brings them right to me or i walk up to her and take them to thro for her:D (she is the only one out of the 3 that brings it back!)
I'll let yall know how it goes.
thanks again.

cher, from my experiences with jack, you can do the following and your pup will come to understand that the bone is yours to give and take.

hold it while she chews, (i've read this isnt a great idea, but it works for me)

if she gets too close to the hand or tries to pull it away, you lift it over her head and make her sit for it. this way she learns it is a treat to have, not a right.

i did this with jack for maybe a week, and now he only barks at my dad over matters of bones :P :P better than everyone i guess 8)

however, i'd try what they said before my suggestion, i'm new to dog ownership, i just do what works for jack.

hope it gets better.
