The dogs in these commercials look so heartbroken and I have to be the first to admit my eyes filled up with tears everytime one of these spots aired. The spot that tugged my heartstrings the most was the one with the copy "I know how to fetch, roll over, play dead, what I don't know is how I ended up in here." When it would re-air it was like a bad car accident for me. I knew what was coming and I wanted to look away but I couldn't. Here's the terrible part, I was not prompted to get up and donate. I consider myself a philanthropic person. In reality, I would rather give money directly to my local animal shelter or make donations to a local rescue. I guess part of me is bothered by the corporation matching donated monies and not offering outright to donate X amount of money. Did anyone contribute money to this drive? What are your thoughts on this type of drive? Finally, and most importantly......Am I the only sap out there? |

You are not the only sap. I have tears in my eyes now just thinking about those commercials. I cried the first time I saw one, then every time another came on, I changed the channel. I couldn't bear to see those sad eyes and faces.
I did donate. I checked the American Humane Association website before I donated but I really couldn't tell what they will do with the money. That shows the power of advertising. Last night the Pedigree guy announced the total was $1.1 million but he didn't say if that was all donations or the total with Pedigree matching. I don't know what I think about this type of drive. I understand wanting to give locally and I still do. But this nationwide campaign perhaps prompted people to donate for the first time, or to get people to think about volunteering, or doing rescue. I'd like to hear periodic updates from the AHA as to what exactly they are doing with the money. |
I agree it is difficult to watch I generally donate my money to OES rescue groups and to individual dogs posted on the forum. That way I know that it is directly helping, not wondering how much goes to administrative costs, etc. A huge company like Pedigree could certainly give millions outright: a write-off and good publicity. |
I agree - they were very well done commercials. There are so many people who are ignorant about the number of dogs in shelters or how they get to be there. Hopefully this will be educational. I didn't contribute to this one - I only am comfortable giving my money to local or groups I know. |
They were heartbreaking commercials. Almost made me want to start feeding Brees Pedigree.
Jake's doing a math-a-thon at school for St. Jude's so all of our extra money is going towards that right now. |
This is an old commercial--I've seen it a long time ago, so I wonder if they have separate campaigns that they do, like for each time period that they show it, or if it is an ongoing campaign--where does that 1.1 million figure come from?
And I think it's a good campaign because many people use Pedigree, so they can feel like they are helping out in some way with the food they buy their dogs, especially if they are not inclined to donate in general, and I also like it because it isn't throwing it in your face. It isn't saying you have to donate or you are a bad person. And matching campaigns are very successful. My company did one for Hurricane Katrina and matched what our employees donated, and it's amazing how much that brings the total up. |
You aren't he only sap! I started turning the commercials out especially when Foz was staring at them in curiosity which made me tear up even more |
No I did not contribute. I believe in direct support, not filtered through corporations.
They take the same clips and rearrange them into new commercials each season. I'm weary of them....even the puppy digging. Harry enjoyed watching them. When he wasn't watching, I changed channels. On the bright side, hopefully they instilled in people the need to understand shelter pets can be wonderful companions. |
Those darn commercials are so upsetting to me. I kept yelling at the tv when they came on "Shut up, David Duchovny!" I can't even watch X Files without thinking about those poor shelter dogs now!
I give them money every year anyway-- the Michigan Humane Society, ASPCA, WWF and individual dogs all get my money. WWF mainly gets my money because I like the panda. |
The bottom line is that this is a marketing campaign. It's great that so much money is getting donated to help homeless pets but what do you remember most out of the commercial - Pedigree! (I don't even remember which homeless pet organization(s) they are donating to.) Yes, they are matching donations but they are going to make that money back two-fold as the consumers will think that they are such a wonderful, caring corporation.
I'm really not trying to take away from all of the contributions, and I'm sure this type of thought provoking commercial will get non-givers motivated. I would rather that people would see that commercial and think, maybe I shouldn't dump my dog off at a shelter? Or maybe I should really think about getting a dog first so it doesn't end up at a shelter. But I'm sure that those type of people wouldn't be watching Westminster in the first place... |

Actually, all I remembered was David Duchovny and I'm not giving him any money. |
That commercial just breaks my heart. But I prefer to give money in a more direct fashion. |
I didn't notice that there was a charity to donate to, only noticed the eyes of the doggies. It would make me buy that dog food if I thought it had good ingredients.
Tearjerker. |
I think that all animal charities are worthy, and I know they shoot commercials in a way that pulls at your heart strings, and I too am a complete SAP - I just choose to give to my own choice. I don't think you should feel guilty - I mean we all give good homes to our animals and we do our bit, thats how I look at it. If I had spare thousands it would all go to animal charities. |
