Now I really am injured

Dogs running wild at the park. I'm bracing, knees bent, but they turned and took me out from the side. LOUD cracking. I'm on the ground writhing in pain. Some girl at the park happened to have crutches in the car. Somehow manage to drive to the hospital (the injury is to my right leg -- it was not easy). 7 hours later after excruciating xrays, they *think* I broke my leg but want to confirm with an MRI next week??? Thank god I had a friend who was able to come and take me home. The pharmacy sent me home with cough medicine instead of the pain killers. My friend is coming back soon with the correct prescription.

My leg hurts, I feel a wreck, exhausted, weak and in pain. That's all. Just want some sympathy please.

Crazy but I guess I couldnt really hold still for the xray -- i was screaming and crying when they tried to straighten my leg. It looks like there is a pretty big break but they weren't sure because they didn't think the location fit the impact I had described.

Oh it hurts :(
OMG!!!! I was hoping this was a JOKE!!!

Sending you TONS of sympathy and maybe a finger-shake or two for going back out on the ice with rambuntious doggies!

Hope your leg is mending fast...get some rest!!

:( :( :( :(
OMG!

Val, that's awful! How can they NOT tell if it is broken or not?
Unbelievable!

What part of the leg is it? Above the knee? Below? That is all you need right now....

I broke a bone in my foot when I was young...soooo painful!

Ice had nothing to do with it. 3 dogs running 60 miles per hour whomp straight into the side of my leg. I drink alot of milk too. Still.
Bosley's mom wrote:

Just below my knee. They think it is the larger bone not the smaller one, if that means something to anyone.

I am going to go lie down. I just needed to get the good oes.org vibes coming my way.
Poor Val! You said you braced for this, so I am assuming you tensed up before this happened which always makes injury worse.
What a rotten thing to happen! I am so sorry for you. :(
:ghug:
OMG Val , I am so sorry. :(
I wish I lived near you to help you some how. This has been a unbelievable last few weeks for you.

You are SO in my prays! :plead:
I hope you Feel better soon.

Antoinette
Oh god Val - my sincere sympathy. Do you have a friend or two that can help you out for a few days or a few weeks? I hope it is nothing so serious as to need ortho surgery. You will be in our prayers.

:ghug:
OOOOOOH NOOOOOOOO 8O

I hope all is going to be OK. :(

:ghug: :ghug:
Oh boy,

This is terrible. Never mind the terrible pain and the prospect of being immobilized for a long time... how will you care for your dogs?

How will you ever care for your disabled dog?

Oh no...

How can we help Val? Anything?
I don't know what to say except I am so sorry this happened to you.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Ouch. I've been clocked by a 100 lb sheepie going full tilt. No wonder my knees are all gone to heck.

Sending out good healing vibes. Hope the pain meds kick in and that your friend's good for some dog walks as well as med runs. Sorry not to be close enough to do more.
Oh, Val,

I feel terrible for you. You don't deserve this to happen. I'm grateful that you know a few people there. Maybe Maggie could hang with one of her sheepie friends to give you some rest? What a miracle you took Chummie to that nice place for the week. So you can just get well and not worry. I hope they give you good working pain killers so you don't suffer.

:ghug: I wish I lived closer so I could help you! Hope you feel better soon!
Oh no, feel better real soon! :ghug: :ghug:
Oh Val.. talk about not needing this to happen!!! :(

That makes me so sad especially knowing that you don't have any help at your house. :(

Big hugs to you.... I so feel like you're family!

:(

Keep us updated...
Val,

I'm shocked and so sorry this happened to you! Hang in there and we're all thinking of you. What can we do to help?

Sending group hug to you.
:ghug:
Really I'm stunned and wish I could say more ...just ask if there is anything you need.

Marianne
8) Val: I am so sorry that this has happened to you! OUCH! I wish there was something I could do to help. Please take care of yourself and I will pray that you heal very quickly. :plead: :ghug: Gentle hugs. :(
THEY THINK you broke your leg??????????? Sounds to me like you need to go see CHummies Dr!!!!!!

POOR VAL, just what you DON'T NEED right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ghug:
Poor Val :( I'm wondering why an MRI would have to wait until next week  It seems like an emergency to me, I can't imagine the pain you must be in.
Oh Valerie,
I am so sorry to hear about your "wreck". On of my best friend was "run over" by one of my sheep. It broke her tibial plateau. She had surgery and was non weight bearing for 10 weeks. I can't believe they sent you home without finding out how bad it is hurt.
I wish I was there too to help! Bless your heart.
Lots of sheepie hugs! :ghug:
Val, is your leg immobilized somehow? They should at least sent you home in a temporary cast/splint & crutches so you will move it less. I don't get why they suggested a MRI vs an xray. Even if you were moving, I think they would have sedated you or something to get a better picture. I am hoping you will get to see a specialist tomorrow? If you broke it, I hope it is in an easy to heal place!

I can definitely sympathize with you though. I don't know if I mentioned it on the forum but Frank nailed me in the calf 2 summers ago and sent me to the ER with a deep vein thrombosis due to the trauma. I was on blood thinners for months. But dogs definitely can cause injury for sure!

I hope you start feeling better soon!!
Good Lord Val!!! So when will you know for sure??? Just what you need...sigh......fingers are crossed for you......stay off that leg!!
That sounds like you need to go back in, or at least get to the nearest ortho clinic. I have worked ortho/neuro for 17 years at our hospital and I've never heard that. !!
I agree with VerveUp - I hope they have your leg immobilized at the very least. It sounds like it could be any and all of the cruciate ligament tears -(anterior, posterior, medial) or at the worst a tibial plateau fx.
Not knowing if you are more injured sounds fishy to me. Definitely get the MRI to see about the soft tissue injuries. If it is tears, there really isn't a big need to rush surgery - it can wait. If bone fx's are involved -that's more urgent for treatment.

Then getting cough medicine........geez!
Maybe the Dr had really bad handwriting??

Sounds like the animal Drs are better than the human ones out there!

I hope you are feeling better soon. Chewie is sending you big licky kisses - they really are very sweet and tickle :D .
Ugh, what a terrible time for this! I hope you are managing taking care of the dogs ok :(
I'm familiar with back flips brought on my excited sheepdogs. You have every ounce of sympathy I have. Wish I still lived in Boulder, you wouldn't have to worry about help taking care of the pups.
Wow, you must really want to get to Alameda East!

So sorry about the injury, hard to be worse timing-wise.

I agree about going into an orthopedist tomorrow. The ER people are great, but over the years I've found that orthopedic injuries are not their thing. They fix you up enough to be able to get to an orthopedist. And there isn't always a radiologist availabel to read the Xrays, so it does happen that they aren't sure sometimes. The location and angle of the break can make it hard to decide.

Healing thoughts continue for you and Chummie.
Geez Val, I was going to come out this week and take you skiing? Really though I feel bad that this happened; hope it turns out not to be a bad break. Chumley needs you. I'll pray that it heals in a hurry.
Hey val -

I'm so sorry to hear about your injury. It must be awful for you not to be able to be outside running with Maggie and helping Chummie along as she recovers. Hopefully you'll be set right and the doctors will be able to help heal you quickly! We send lots of loves your way -
I hope you get better soon Val.
Jeez Val... I think you've had your quota for serious things happening for a while. :( I hope you'll feel better soon!
Jaci

A fracture isn't always easy to see.....especially with the patient writhing around in pain and no clear Xray. If it is a cruciate tear (and they can be mighty painful) there wouldn't be a Xray of that. Tibial plateau fx aren't something you bounce back well from either. It's just not sounding good.

ER docs don't see many "run over by sheepdogs" cases. Now if you were a kicked by a horse, a skier or skateboarder then they can relate.

What a time you are having lately. My biggest sympathies.
When it rains, it pours, huh? I have nothing to say but, wow, that sucks. As someone who has broken almost every major bone in her body, I can say I really do know what you're feeling. I love how they want you to contort in all these positions for the x rays with a broken bone. I know it's not to torture you, but it sure seems like it, doesn't it?
SheepieBoss wrote:

So sorry - it must be terribly painful. The ER visit doesn't sound good at all. I was blindsided by a dog at the dog park where we go all the time - i literally saw stars. A year later i still have a big bump where hit. I have been so careful to be aware all the time where the dogs are running, etc etc.

I sure hope you get relief and some good medical care soon to relieve the pain you are suffering.
Sending positive thoughts your way..... :cheer: Go Val, get better....
How are you feeling tonight Val?
Often a break feels worse at night, especially the second day :(

I hope you're ok ... do you have anyone who could come and help you?
Oh gosh, Val! I hope you are okay...never a dull moment!
Various updates- -- I'm feeling a bit loopy so this is the best I can do.

A CT scan today confirmed my tibia is broken just below the knee. I need to get an appointment with an orthopedist.

It does hurt, but the painkillers help as long as I don't move.

There were no sheepdogs involved in my injury. It was some or all of three smaller golden colored dogs at the park.

My sister-in-law is already on a plane! She'll be here all week!!

Yesterday, one of my new Boulder friends helped chauffer me around. Today, Maggie's dogwalker was a tremendous help. She lives just a couple blocks away. She's out of town the rest of this week but is available again after my SIL goes home.

Chummie's doc gave me a very positive update on her progress this morning. She is actually walking with support and frequent rest stops. They are working hard with her on transitions -- from standing to sitting to lying and back up again. They also say they are getting lots of butt waggles and kisses from her.

So I am hanging in there. . .
I'm so sorry. As an ER nurse, many ER doc's are competent reading X-rays, unfortunately many are not. Ligaments are not viewed well on plain films and need an MRI. You should have been given a referral to an orthopedist, call the office and tell them you need to be seen ASAP. Boulder should have a hospital with at least 18 hr MRI.
thanks for updating, Val! Im glad to hear that you have family on the way to help you out! :phew:

Thats so great that Chumly is walking w/help!!...and BUTT-WIGGLES!!!...yeah! :D

Well, at least you and she have a lot in common at the moment...talk about mother-daughter bond experiences!

get well soon!
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

Val, so sorry about your injury. Happy to
hear that your sister is coming out to help you.
Give Maggie big hugs, she'll take good care of
you. Good luck at the orthopod and get some rest.

(We know you just want to ride in Chum's cart  )

Yay Chummie!!! Woohoo!!! That's amazing progress! :) :go:  :yay: :hearts: :cheer:
The doc just called. She says it is in fact a tibial plateau fracture. :(

Oh and I did see stars when it happened.
I bet you did!! Hope things go better for you I am leaving for The Westminster dog show in the AM I will keep you and Chummy in my thoughts

Hugs

Val,
I was praying it wasn't broken. I am so sorry, that totally sucks!

I am glad you SIL is coming to help you out. What a good SIL!

That is awesome news about Chummie! Hope she continues to recooperate quickly.

Hope you also have a quick recovery!
Oh, Val. I am sooo sorry....

What is the prognosis for the break? How long to heal etc ?

Good that you will have someone to help out for a bit.

And Chummie's news!!!!! YYYAAAAAA!!! :yay:
I hope you heal soon Val, we will be thinking of you and praying for a speedy recovery. Glad you sis is able to stay with you.

Great News about Chum, just gets better and better everytime you post about her progress. Hoping the same for you too, get better soon.
Boy, I'm sorry I was right  . That is the pits!
I'm glad people are there to help out and your SIL is on her way. Take all the help you can get!

On a positive note, that is great news about Chum's progress! :D
Thinking positive thoughts for you, Val! :-) I'll lend you my "knee walker" if you can use it.

Get well soon!!!

:ghug:

Nita (the Queen of broken bones)
Oh no! Val - I'm so sorry to hear about your accident!! What a rotten thing to happen. It really sucks!

Thank goodness your sister-in-law is coming to stay with you all week - that's fabulous. You can use the help and the TLC!! :ghug:

Very glad to hear Chumley is up and walking some. That's terrific news! That girl's spirit and will are amazing.

I wish there were something more concrete that I could do to help you. But, you've got all my best wishes for a speedy recovery and lots of hugs coming your way. :ghug:
Hi Val,

Glad to hear you're going to have some help and please take care of yourself! Lots of hugs from me.

Marianne
OMG, I'm gone from the forum for the week-end and have to come back to this horrible news!!

WOW!! 8O I can't begin to imagine the pain you're in. I'm appalled they couldn't do something immediately, though. Will you need surgery? You said it's your right leg - no driving for quite awhile, I'm assuming??

I sure wish I lived closer. I would love to help you out, friend.

On a much brighter note - YAY CHUMMIE!!! :cheer: :yay:
Oh no, poor Val!

Is it a good thing that it wasn't the knee but just below? (looking for a silver lining?)...I'm glad you're going to have your SIL to help you. I can't imagine not having any help.

Take lots of cough medicine--you know how much worse a leg break can get if you are congested:wink: or maybe I guess switch over to the painkillers! You and Chum will have to do swim therapy together!
Val, you are computer savvy so have probably alread found this site, if not, there is some good info there. Reading it made me want to weep for you............

http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/kneegeeks/1588526011.html

This sounds just awful and the recovery is no piece of cake. I can't imagine how you'll do this with two dogs, one of whom is infirmed like her upright Mommy.

susan
I'm so sorry to hear about your leg Val. I'd already been thinking about Chum all weekend. I'll go ahead and add you to my prayer list as well. I hope you have a speedy recovery and that things get back to normal quickly.

All I can say to this is " Ouch".... :(

Val, you need a very big hug......with sad little faces.........
Val,

I am so sorry to hear about your leg. My thoughts and prayers
for a quick recovery are with you.
Thanks for all of the support. This group is amazing.

I am having surgery tomorrow. The docs here say they see this all the time and they are going to fix me up just fine. Of course, the recovery will take time. But I just hope it all goes smoothly.

I am going to try to get someone to take Maggie to be boarded at Chum's facility to give me a bit of time to recover. They were amazing -- all full due to the holiday weekend coming up but they said they can make room for her.

My surgery is late in the afternoon so after tomorrow morning, you probably won't hear from me for a bit.
Good luck Val!!!
It really is a pretty routine surgery for an experienced ortho. This type of fracture happens with regularity - especially in the winter! Of course, the dogs helped you out more than the weather did.

Do you have an address we can send you cards??

I'll be thinking of you in surgery tomorrow :D - best wishes!
got sheep wrote:

So Sweet! Thank you. I would love cards, but I am but reluctant to put my address out there. You can send mail to my PO Box and I will make sure it is checked regularly. PO Box 4626 Boulder CO 80306.

They showed me the picture of the fracture. It is essentially as if my femur were forced down like a chisel into my tibia and created a downward fracture leaving a pie shaped wedge with crud in it. That explains the pronlonged cracking noise I heard. It hurts just to think of it.
Good luck with the surgery Val. Will keep you in our prayers that all goes well.
Val,
Best wishes for your surgery & wishing you a speedy recovery!
The PO box is fine. I am going to try and find just the right card!!

You did a good job on that leg. What does your consent say the surgery exactly will be?? (Just curious)

Rehab will be work, but now you and Chum will get to do it together. Poor Maggie will be lost  - she has both of you laid up for awhile. I hope they spoil her good! :D

Wow, that sounds really nasty... best wishes for a quick recovery! :)
Poor Val! I hope you're back on your feet soon!

ORIF tibial plateau fracture with possible arthroscopic assistance

Actually, I just listened to the most amazing progress report on Chum. She is way ahead of me. They said that unexpectedly, Chum got up and followed her therapist down the hall and out the door -- proving she can actually get up by herself and walk (and that she likes her therapist!). They said she has been showing off by walking up to everyone to be petted and is giving lots of kisses. They are working on the underwater treadmill to improve her endurance and also working with her outdoors on uneven surfaces. I am so happy for her and so grateful for the work they are doing with her. It is inspiring exactly when I need some inspiration.
Wow val chum is amazing, that nature is awesome, "Hey you Pat Me"

I hope your progress is going good too and the pain is not as bad now.
Maybe you should join Chum and board there with her for some TLC as well.

Get better soon, both of you girls. :ghug:
Thanks! The ortho nurse in me needed to know  .

WOW about Chum!!!  That is wonderful news to take into surgery. :D :D :D
Wonderful news about Chummie!!
Val: My prayers are with you today, during your surgery and recovery. Keep positive thoughts. Everything is going to work out ok. You know all of your friends on the Forum will be sending you positive thoughts. We hope to hear from you soon, because we will then know you are ok. Stay strong dear friend!
Great news regarding Chummie! Wow trailing after her therapist, how great. That sheepie girl has such spirit! It is so great that they where able to get Maggie down there also, Maybe Chummie will be able to see her at some point.

Take Care Val. :ghug: gentle hugs and I hope to hear from you soon!
Good Luck Val, I am sure all will go well. What a rotten thing to have to go through after just moving and dealing with Chums problems :ghug:
hi Val

Best wishes for your surgery & wishing you a speedy recovery!
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

wendy and gismo
That injury sounds excruciating. 8O Oh - it makes me cringe just to think of it.

That's wonderful news about Chumley! I'm sure they are taking extra special care of her there. I have to smile at the image of her getting up to go be petted. :D That's our Chummie girl!! :D

Certainly they will take good care of Maggie, too, and you can concentrate of taking care of Val. Did your SIL arrive okay?

Thinking the best thoughts for you, Val and praying for a speedy recovery with the least amount of pain possible. :ghug:
Val, you will be in my thoughts and prayers all day today, until we hear how your surgery went. :ghug: It's good that they seem confident that everything will be fine and that it's a surgery they've performed many times before. It's always different, though, when it's happening to YOU.

What fantastic news about Chumley!! And now that Maggie will be there too, I bet she'll recuperate even faster. No qualms about Maggie - she'll LOVE all the attention and interaction with everyone, 2 legged and 4 legged. :go:

You've have enough drama in your life for awhile. Let's slow it down a bit now, shall we??
Drugs!! GOOD DRUGS!!! Here's hoping they give you lots of good drugs!! :D
We realize the post-op will be intense and don't expect to hear from you for several days if not more. Know that our prayers and good wishes are with you.

Wonderful news about the Chums.......she's such a sweetheart. Maggie will be fine. Hopefully she can get to Alameda and can visit her sister.

susan
Val,
I am not signed in now but am sending you a PM at noon today. I hope you can read it before you go.

Nicole (Bosley's mom)
Val,
I hope everything goes well with your surgery today.
Before you know it you'll be up and running again....or at least walking
I'm so happy that Chum is doing so well. Maggie....stay healthy!!
Keeping both of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Good luck with your surgery and recovery - your attitude is great. It is wonderful you will have your sil there to be with you when you come out of surgery and afterwards. I haven't been on here that long, but certainly wish you all the best for a speedy recovery and as little pain as possible.
So sorry, this is terrible news. Good luck with a good surgery and speedy recovery.

That's great news about Chummie, yes she is an inspiration. I can't help thinking that her coming home for the day gave her an incentive to get well so she can come home again.

I'm sending lots of prayers and good thoughts to you and Chummie and Maggie.
Sorry I am just getting back from being in NY at Westminster. You were on our minds while we were chatting. Hope that you are a fast healer!! Just like Chum!! What great news to hear about her!!
